Title: IAT temps
Post by: black99lightning on June 05, 2014, 11:14:37 PM
So I decided to log my IAT temps since I'm running a K&N Typhoon and it should be pulling temps in the 200+ since it's pulling nothing but hot underhood air.  Well....the highest I saw on my 10 minute journey was at idle and that was about 105.  When driving normal it would run low 90's.  Under WOT when it was getting cooler air into the engine bay, I was seeing mid to high 80's with a low of 85.6.  Outside temp was 81 according to SYNC.  Eventually, I'll go back to the track with the stock box and make runs, videotaped of course.

I purchased some stick on heat shield for my airaid box, tried to wrap it all around the box and see if it will help in reducing the air temps,

After much irritation with my typhoons iat's I ran my best times with the oem starting the runs at 142 degrees.

By the end they were down to ambient.

So with our over achieving cmc's I'm not sure this is an issue. What I am still concerned with is a slight lag in throttle response due to air velocity being slowed due to lack of the OEM bellows. This is also what is talked about with cai's and the warranty tsb regarding "overspeeding" the turbos. Smooth is not always good.

I've been watching mine for a while since I installed the Air Raid synthetic, I haven't modified the box and it has that open top that's so popular for pulling hot underhood air directly in  ;)  Usually IAT's are within 15 degrees of ambient so not too bad but my question is, where is the sensor? Is it in the airbox, I know there is one there that had to be relocated to the AirRaid box but not sure if that's the one the IAT reading comes from?  Or is there one further downstream somewhere in the Intake Manifold?  I'm looking at my  options for an intercooler upgrade with the next round of parts. I'm wondering how  If it's the sensor in the airbox, how would it tell me if the intercooler upgrade had any effect :-

I think the one you are reading IAT's from is the one in the air pipe just downstream of the air box. The reading you are looking for is called charge temp, or maybe IAT2. I could not get either of those to work with my Torque display because of a lack of the right PID. I'd love to get that display too. Love to get some more PID's!

There are 2 iat sensors one before and after the CAC.

I understand the two IAT's.  However since the complaint is pulling hot air from underhood the sensor that is going to read the air coming through the filter would be the first sensor?  The secondary sensor will tell you how effecient the CAC is.  No different than any other FI Ford.  So when driving and especially under WOT conditions I was seeing ambient or very close to ambient.

As you should. the air is moving through the system to the area the air intake is via the grill work and diverter on most cars. The issue lies in your 1/4 mile times where its all hot air from the engine bay as the car is not moving/ bringing in fresh air. So your are down on power till the car get moving. That's why the factory air box works well. It helps prevent that initial heat soak effect. :)

On a dyno you won't see this as they have fans moving the air right away. ;)

At least that is what I understand is happening. And that is why I am still doubtful as the real world effectiveness of a CAI. To me its strictly for sound, looks and numbers on paper. ;)
