Title: DJE's Exterior Mods
Post by: DJE624 on December 06, 2013, 01:47:29 PM
Have just done a few subtle mods to my exterior.  Last summer, the first thing I did was remove the black pin stripes.  I got the windows tinted 50% on sides and back, had the Eibachs installed and put on SHO hub overlays.  Next, was a sorta big move going with the red surround tail lights.  Since then, I recently removed all badges except for the front and rear ovals.  This was in preparation for getting my new fender ornaments.  Yup, I said ornaments.  That's what Ford calls them.  Says so right on the box.  LOL  Up until now, I've been calling them "vents" (with quotation marks).  Not really a mod but I got some pretty neat plates, too.  12 SHO  I would still like to do a light tint on the headlights to take the edge off them but, after my tint removal nightmare, I'm holding off on that for now.  It's too cold anyway and I thought maybe I might have a pro tinter do it.  I had thought about having the roof painted gloss black but have scrapped that idea.  Hopefully, this Spring I'm getting the TSW Tremblants I have been pining over.  I still want to try to remove the SHO from my rear emblem and see if I want to use the letters on the trunk lid.  But, the lid looks nice and clean being plain, and the plates let other drivers know they've just been tromped by a SHO!

Oh yeah, I have some Lamin-X tint for the rear lower reflectors I want to put on.  That will make a nice black/white line in the back.

very clean I like it.

Do the darker 13 headlights fit in the previous years ?

I would want to add the blacked out headlights and newer grill and call it a day. Plus the rims you mentioned.

what are they ?

Thanks!  I don't think the '13 lights would fit seeing how they changed the grill, etc.  You might be able to do the whole front end, clip and all.

Here are the Tremblants I want.

Sweet wheels DJ!  I hope Santa can help you some on those.

I agree, on a white SHO I wouldn't go with the blacked out HL's... chrome inside is better looking and cleaner.  :thumb:

On my tux black SHO I am putting the next to darkest Lamin-X and going to LED switchbacks and side markers.  Doing the darkest Lamin-X on the tails.

I love your idea of doing the reflectors... do you think the low position will decrease the life of the Lamin-X?

Thanks Tom!

The Lamin-X is pretty thick stuff.  I think it will last as long as the car does.

DJ, Which color is the Lamin-X you got for the reflectors? Are you going to cover them in pace, or remove and reattach?

Assuming you had to buy a fairly large sheet... I'd be interested in purchasing the left over if you think it would do another set of reflectors.

When you get the tail light tint, they will include the reflectors on a '13.  When I saw that Darkside had them, I called and they sent me some material for my '12.  I had smoked (med dark) in the rear and gunsmoke (med) in the front.  I should have used tint (light) in the front for my preference.  You will still be able to see some red in my reflectors close up but from a distance they will not stand out. I will try to do them in place so I can wedge the tint in the gap.  Then trim at the base of the gap with a razor.

Good info... I am doing Charcoal on the tails (darkest) and med (gunsmoke) on the HL's
Sounds likeI should get the reflector kits with the Tails... but in Charcoal... I may have to lighten that with a stock sheet if they are going to be functional at all.

Thanks Man!  I'm happy with it so far.  I really don't want to do too much more.  I like the subtle changes I've made and I think the wheels will just top it off.

New side vents look great Dave! I really like the change I made to the rear, because I don't really care for the debadged look (thanks bpd for the idea)!

BTW, not posted much, had my monthly eye injection today and they diulated both my eyes, so I can't see worth a darn!! Also the tint on my tails are the gunsmoke from Lamin-X.

That they do!  In Ohio they're required, we even tried to get the requirement off the books but the FOP cried.  I guess the cops in every other state with no front plates are just better then our cops.  :bunny:  It's rarely enforced but I just know I'd be the one.  I also have a CHL so I'd rather not deal with that during a stop as well.

Yea concealed handgun license.  It's been almost 10 years since OH started issuing licenses so it's probably ok now.  When it first came out cops didn't know wtf to do and couldn't handle "normals" being armed.  It was also implemented poorly in the in car and dispatchers computer.  They didn't have anywhere to put the flag so they put it in the felony warrant section!  Cops that ran the plates would have a giant red felony warrant alert pop up on their screens and go into super cop mode without reading it.  There were accounts of cops approaching the car with gun drawn and aimed at the driver to calling multiple backup units commanding the driver out of vehicles with AR's aimed at them like gang members.

There was also the ridiculous section in the law that the gun had to be unconcealed in plain site while you were driving leading to the phrase "Buckeye Tuck".  Before you got in the car you had to unconceal your firearm and tuck your shirt in behind it.  If it was cold enough for a coat just forget about it.  People were getting felony charges if the cop couldn't see the whole gun but a plastic baggy corner hanging out of a pocket was in plain sight to search for drugs.

I've always been very pro law enforcement but all of the stuff that happened irritated me to no end.  So it was best not to ask to get pulled over by not having a front plate.

Yeah, it IS a delicate balance between police & public, no right answer for every situation.  Best you can do is be err on the side of safety/conservatism.

<--- Still hoping to get away with it.  Worst comes to worst, I'd have to have the dealer put the bracket back on.

EDIT-  Wow!  They must have some of these bumper plugs already painted.  I got a shipping notice already.  That's great!  I didn't want to order them util I had my bracket off.  I would have waited until the plugs came to take the bracket off so I could just pop them in.  But, they say you can't have larger than a 1/4" hole.  I found that I did have 1/4" holes, then ordered. I'm glad I won't be driving around too long without the plugs!
Title: Re: DJE's Exterior Mods
Post by: dalum on December 25, 2013, 12:20:44 AM
That's good news about the holes.  I had looked at the plugs before but I was afraid I'd have to enlarge the current holes for the plugs.  Then I would be SOL if I had to put my bracket back on.

One of my other concerns is they use LIDAR a lot around here and they start by aiming at the plate.  It would be pretty obvious if there wasn't one heh.

Got my Bumper Plugs in today.  They came on a backing, in a little plastic bag, in a padded envelope, in a box.  Great packaging!  They were in perfect shape and came really fast!

Here is the before picture showing the holes.  The holes from the factory were the perfect size.

The studs on the plugs had those little arrowheads on them.  They went in snug and firm.

I am very happy with the results.  Of course no holes at all to begin with would have been better but, these plugs look really good and professional.

Well, just sitting around tonight waiting to close ROTM when I thought, HEY!  I can just pull those rear reflectors off and do them inside!  Yeehaw!  So, I did.  They came off fairly easy.  First up, is a picture with out flash.  They are much darker than stock.  Then with flash.  The reflectivity (is that a word?) is still there.  I'll put them back on tomorrow afternoon.  I hope it will clean up the black/white line in the back.

Reflectors look good...now you have me thinking I might have to do them! lol  Also the plugs look good I doubt anyone will even know that you removed a license holder.  Funny, my car didn't come with a front license holder (Pennsylvania doesn't have front license plates)...kinda wish I had one, then I could put my old SC Citadel alumni plate on it..(maybe)!
One last note, I finally got around to order some of the stuff I want to use on your old taillights, maybe I will have them finished in time for spring!

Thanks Tom!  I can't wait to get them on and get pics.  I am thinking of doing my windshield banner tomorrow.  It's supposed to be pretty warm.  I'll be in the garage of course.  BPD gave me some really great ideas on how to put it on.  I'm going to see how it looks on the top of windshield and, on top or bottom of rear glass.  Most likely the top of windshield.

Of course you gotta decide where the banner looks best.. My vote is top of the rear window...... so people can see it after you ambush them at a red light!.  LOL

Post by: DJE624 on December 28, 2013, 12:20:15 AM
I thought about that but was wondering how it would effect the look when the brake light is on.

BTW if anyone wants to do their rear reflectors on a 10-12, the number on the package that Lamin-X sent me is 1-410.  It was the perfect size to do the two.  I just sliced it in half.  (That number may designate size and tint. Which was about 3" X 10" and "Smoked".)

I'll try a bunch of ways.  One thing I have seen lately is a vertical banner down the right (pass.) side of the windshield.  Those look pretty cool but may be a little ricey.  IDK.  Anyway, if LMS did that the name wouldn't fit!    ;D

Just put the tinted rear reflectors back on.  They look great however I would suggest using the darkest tint from Lamin-X.  I used the second from darkest because that's what I had.  It looks black unless there is direct sunlight.  In non-direct sunlight or shade, they are pretty much black .  These shots are in direct sunlight.  It really cleaned up the rear end.  I'm happy with them.

The license plate is a thought, but the "12 SHO" is great.  Maybe a black frame and a smoke overlay since it's on the black trim fascia if you changed anything. The front of course is done in this respect with the plugs.

LOL Mark!  I like my shaved rear end!   ;D  I didn't do it to unidentify, I did it to have it nice and clean.  The only emblems I have are the front and rear ovals (which I hope to make black) and the SHO fender ornaments.  Some time in the future, I may black out the spear and the window surrounds.

I took a few pictures of my LMS banner taped on the other day.  I don't know if I even really want to put it on.  But, if I do, I'm leaning towards the lower back window.  Here are a couple angles.  I might just try it and see how it really looks.  I can always take it off if I don't like it.

The white will compliment the car if you do install.  Nice looking banner too. The one thing I notice is that the banner is straight and the bottom of the rear glass is curved... If that isn't an issue for you it's a great place.

Yeah, the window is curved so the banner will have a slight arch to it.  That's okay.

Well, today started out as a nightmare.  I got a call from my dealer that the wheels had showed up.  He then told me that their wheel balancer was on the fritz.  He wanted me to come in next Wednesday!  I almost cried.  I called around to a few good shops.  F & F wanted $40 a pop to re-mount.  I found another place, a really good place that would do them for $20 a pop like the dealer would.  So, I drove 20 some miles each way to go pick up the wheels and bring them to my new guy.  They did a fantastic job!  No damage, TPMS, torqued to 100, hub emblems straight and great treatment.  I found out why my TPMS light has been going on too.  The left front with 40 actual psi is registering at 29 psi.  So, now I can get the dealer to fix that.  I am ecstatic! All I can say is "It looks BOSS"!  Anyway, on to the pictures!

I took a video when they pulled it out for a test drive.  I'll try to get that up.

Simple and clean, A real compliment to your SHO's appearance... and look easy to keep clean too  :thumb:

very nice!

originally i thought they were too subtle and were not worth the change from the standard rims.  But, they look very good and classy, reminds me of a large Audi (definitely a compliment).

BTW, how much did it cost to get rid of the pinstripe and who did it?

if i go, going to upgrade to 20", so tires as well. so not an inexpensive upgrade, but the stock goodyears are just junk. leaning to michelin like you have or conti dsw's. that site you had that shows current wheels versus what you are going to do is sweet & showed should fit real well even with my calipher covers

Stay away from the Michelin Primacy...I've been very disappointed with them, they are not good in any snow and I've had sidewall cracking with them, and again, when contacting Michelin they blew me off, their customer service is the worst of any company I've ever dealt with.  I know I will never ever buy an Michelin product again...not even wiper blades!

Sorry Mark, I haven't had a problem with the Primacy.  They only have 6600 on them but they are two years old.  When I need new tires I'll probably go with the 255 Conti's or possibly the Pilots.
Title: Re: DJE's Exterior Mods
Post by: mval on January 03, 2014, 12:34:39 PM
mark-wow that good to know. i was looking @ pilots but was leaning to the conti anyway. good rating on them & good reviews.  my goodyears haven't cracked but have worn real goofy, in the middle & i keep the pressure right & rotated them every 5k   & are no good in rain or snow. 20k only on them. the set i had on my mopar was low profile & all and made 30k. so these are real dogs. wish i could make to PA for for big meet would be fun.

Me2.... While I have had no problems with the OEM  20" Michelin Primacy It's only at about 5000 miles..... But my son had two separations on these at about 15K  ...on his MKS.... and went back with 255/40/20 with a ton of clearance.

When time comes I'm going to go to 255-275 tread width and maintain sidewall height using 30-40 profile... likely the Conti

I just bought a brand new Ford TPMS 12 (9L3Z-1A189-A) for $19.99 shipped from a liquidator on ebay.  I had $6.45 in ebay bucks to put towards it. So, $13.54!  I figured that since the guys at Advanced Auto Care did such a good job on my wheels, and I can trust them to be careful, I will just go over there and have them throw it in.  I doubt they will charge me the $20 it costs to swap the wheel.  Even if they do, I'm looking at $35 to solve my TPMS problem and just a short trip in to town instead of going to the dealer 25 miles each way.

Okay.  Here is the latest update.

They couldn't get me in for the TPMS sensor replacement this afternoon.  I couldn't call for an appointment until I had the thing in my hand.  So, I'll be in there first thing in the morning.

Then, I'm of to see the tint guy.  I found a better guy than the one I was going to use.  This guy does it all.  Besides windows and headlights, he does graphics for police and fire vehicles, body wraps and more.  He is going to install my Lamin-X headlight tint and my LMS windshield banner.  If I don't like the banner, I have a couple white LMS logo stickers for the rear 1/4 windows.  We are also going to look at putting a light tint on my Blue Ovals.  Just enough to tone them down a bit.  I got the idea from looking at his Facebook where he had blacked out a Blue Oval on an Edge.  That was actually painted and looked really good.  So I thought, hey!  How about a little light tint?

The weather should be good temp wise for a few days.  May get a little rain tomorrow afternoon.  This guy I am using has a way of accelerating the curing process and I have commandeered the garage for tomorrow night.  I am hoping to get her all cleaned up and have some new pictures to post this weekend.  Yeehaw!

Yeah Mark.  I did notice that it appeared a touch darker than yours. It is the Lamin-X "Tint" (light) designation.  It is much lighter than the gun smoke (medium) I had on there before.   Probably about half as dark.  But, also, it is very overcast here today.

Okay guys!  Time to toot the horns of two of my favorite shops.  Up first is Advanced Auto Clinic in Delavan, WI.  They are the guys who did my wheel mounts.  They also discovered why my TPMS notice kept coming up and driving me crazy.  One of the sensors was registering 29 psi when in fact there was 40 psi.  (Two dealers failed to diagnose.)  They also took great care of my new wheels.  Today, they put the new sensor in and I think I'm good.   Great bunch of guys there!

Next up is Fire Guys Tint.  Joe is the man over there!  I can't compliment his work enough and guess what?  He drives an XSport!  He did a fantastic job on my headlight tint using a steamer.  They really came out perfect.  He may be showing up here pretty soon.  If anyone needs tinting, wrapping, etc.  and lives within a couple of hours of Antioch, IL I recommend you use him.  I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with him while he worked.  A real car guy!

Thanks guys!  I'm very happy.

Well, it looks that way because of the overcast.  We didn't do the Blue Oval emblems.  Too much curve around the edge.

I don't know what % the headlight tint is.  It is only designated as "Tint" (light) on Lamin-X website.  But my best guess would be close to 50%.  Pretty close to what my windows are.

Very easy.  When you get the new ones, look at the back.  You will see how they clip in and where the clips are.  Then, just shove a credit card or thin plastic putty knife in the slot around the edge where each clip is.  If you do the tops, the thing will basically fall right out into you hand.  Then, just pop the new ones in.  You'll hear them click.

Dave, I think the reason the tint looks darker is because it's on a white car, I really think it looks good, I think it doesn't look as dark on my red car just because of the color. Also glad to hear you had such a good experience with the installer!

Thanks Mark.  You're probably right about looking lighter on a darker car.  Joe, the installer is a member here now. Busyman.  I had a great time talking with him as he worked.  I didn't want to leave. When I first drove up, I saw that the White XSport on his Facebook was actually his ride.  I knew it was going to be a good experience!  It's quite a relief to kiss that nightmare I had with the headlights GOOD BYE!

Not a chance for that.  The grill, bezels and wheels match.  I almost think I should have done a silver banner.  Almost.

Window Surrounds and Trunk Lid Spear Wrapped

Joe The Fire Guy did it again!  Great job on the window surrounds and spear!  It was a tougher job than we thought.  A lot of trimming little corners, etc.  Thanks Joe!

Thanks!  I love it.  1000 X better than the chrome.  Yeah, the spear was a pain.  It's all one vinyl piece.  We took the emblem off.  Put the vinyl on, then trimmed around the adhesive sponge, then put the emblem back on.  That little edge around the emblem took some time.  When I go back for my check up, I have a new emblem to put on since the clear was peeling a little on the old one.

BOSS is an understatement ..looks great ..what size btw

Thought since I got her washed on the way back from my spark plug swap, I'd throw up some full body shots with the new window surround and spear wrap.  Sorry, she's no where as clean as she should be.

Some better close ups of my banner and PPE stickers.  Joe aka Fire Guy aka Busyman, has become a good friend of mine.  They don't come any better than him.  And, as a plus, he is fantastic at what he does.  He had originally put my LMS banner on.  Yesterday, he re-did my PPE stickers.  I can't put a decal, sticker or emblem on straight to save my life.  Thanks Joe!

Got to do my first hand wash of the season today!  Got inside the wheels too.  That only reminded me that I have to do something with the rotors.  I also picked up a new camera.  What a day!  Here's a couple new shots.

Decent scenery was pretty tough to come by being the end of winter.  This was an old house converted into a specialty breakfast place which is now abandoned.
