Title: MKS at the track
Post by: Grimster on October 13, 2013, 10:56:58 PM
Finally had a chance to take the MKS to the track.  Disappointed that I didnt get into the 12's, but oh well.  It was fun.

I ran a total of 4 passes.  First run I got a 13.7@99mph.  Then steadily got faster and started taking some time off the ET.

This was my best pass of the day (and my last pass).

Im in the left lane (F186)

Here is a video of that pass.

2010 Lincoln MKS Ecoboost 1/4 Track - 13.3 @ 102mph (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e921i8lPEDA#)

My mods are just intake / meth kit / tune.  Thought it'd be faster with the meth kit.  Cars seems to launch ok (finally broke the 2.0 mark!).  When I hit 3rd gear it just seems to fall on it's face.  Maybe Im just too used to my old supercharged cobra that just pulled and pulled and pulled.

Temperature was about 75? during that run.  This was at Thunder Valley Raceway on Saturday.  I believe the DA was about 2000.

Cool video.  Thanks for posting.  DA wasn't in your favor for sure.

Nice video and thanks for posting. It is addictive and as you said, you'll definitely go again.
That said, your time is not bad, but I would say something is definitely not right... My MKT ran a 13.3 on a tune only from LMS.
From what I've heard, Torrie is a very good tuner and as per Ecobrick Bob, he has a 93 octane tune that is comparable or even more aggressive than Livernois' tune.
So, if you have water meth injection, my guess is that either something is wrong with your car, or the tune is too conservative.
You should be high 12's in those conditions.
Call him back, datalog etc. and go back to the track and bring us back a 12's ticket would you?
Good luck!

I agree with Steve.....

There's no way in hell, with the mods you've listed, that you're reigning in the times you have.

That's crap. An improvement as SHODDED says, sure.

But certainly less than desirable.

Get those logs done, readjust your tune, and do it again.

Might also want to check for those goofy chaffed wires syndrome that's affected so many of us SHO owners. That's worth at least a peek down into the engine bay.

Good luck and report back.

I just ran Friday with Unleashed 93 tune and best was 13.25  I was in the 12.90's in June.  DA was 2550 and 70 degrees.  I'm not running meth just tune.  Fyi

Although using the correction factor that 13.25 would be a 12.85 at sea level.  LOL

I hear ya on the Cobra.  My 03 pullied car was trapping 13-15 mph faster in the quarter than the SHO.

I am assuming you are tuned for your W/M kit.  If not, W/M will actually slow you down as it makes your vehicle run rich.

I'm not surprised that you guys don't think the SHO pulls as hard at the top end as your Cobras did...I think this is where the V-8 shows it's power compared to the 6.....

Ya, I ran Torrie's W/M tune.  I even logged a run before and Torrie sent me an updated W/M file.  That updated file is the one that I've had on the car for a while now, and was the same tune I used at the track.

It's raining here today, so once it dries up a bit I'll do some datalogging and see what comes from that.  I suppose I could also work with LMS and get a tune from them to compare between the two.  Meh, we'll see.

Not just that, the extra 1000 lbs and the drivetrain loss due to AWD system. That said, when drove properly those 2003 Cobras are supposed to run similar times and trap speed as the new 5.0L Mustang GTs, which is 12.8-13.0 at 110-114 mph stock...
I have a video on youtube (steve142857) when I ran a 12.1 at 116.5mph against a 5.0 GT that didn't launch too good but still managed a 13.3 at 108mph... The SHO has it in it, just a matter of adding a few goodies!
But back to your MKS, it surely is missing something...

I don't think Livernois will send you a tune with a W/M system, unless you go see them in person.
But a tune only, Unleashed or Livernois, should bring you in the low 13's alone...
Look at Hennessey's MKS with 435 hp running 13.08... That is with only a tune and CAI... With W/M, it would def. run in the 12's...

LMS will send you a W/M tune but they want you to go to a dyno to test before street use.

A few weeks ago, I was running just Torrie's basic 93 tune in my Flex.  The DA was around 2700 - 75-80 deg, and I ran exactly the same 1/8 mi time as your best (also my best that night).  My 60' was a bit better, like a 1.95.  Unfortunately,  there was a big 1/8 mi meet the following day so they were not posting 1/4 mi times.  Calculating from tables put my 1/4 around 13.4, which is the best I have done with just a canned tune.
I do have PPE Downpipes, a custom exhaust and CAI, plus smaller diameter tires.  But.. Flex weighs at least 450lbs more.

When I run w/m, my times are .4 to .6 better depending on DA & temp, so you should have been running in the 12's.  Log your tune with W/M on in first and second, and send it off to Torrie.  I'm sure he can tweak it to run somewhat better.  He has been in Houston tuning cars, so may not get back as quickly as usual.
