FORD F-150 2013-2014

Details
Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
SUMMARY:
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 F-150 vehicles manufactured August 1, 2013, to August 31, 2014 equipped with 3.5L engines. The master cylinder rear cup seal may roll, resulting in brake fluid leakage from the primary reservoir into the brake booster.
CONSEQUENCE:
Loss of brake fluid from the primary reservoir results in a complete loss of front brake function, increasing the risk of a crash.
REMEDY:
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake master cylinder and, if necessary, the brake booster, free of charge. Remedy parts are currently unavailable. Ford mailed interim notices to owners on July 12, 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16S24.
NOTES:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov (http://www.safercar.gov).
Use our VIN Look-Up tool to see if your vehicle is affected by this recall (major light vehicles only):
link to Vin Lookup Page (https://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/)

" On your Vehicle, the brake Master cylinder may allow brake fluid to leak into the brake booster. If the brake fluid reservoir is depleted below a per-determined level, you will be alerted that brake system service is required by a combination of the following:

. An audible Chime
. A full screen message center alert
. Illuminated of the red brake warning indicator ( shown to the left )

If the brake fluid reservoir is depleted through continued vehicle operation you may experience a change in break pedal travel and feel, and reduced brake functioning the front wheels. Brake function the rear wheels is unaffected by this condition. Reduced brake function in the front wheels can extend stopping distance, increasing the risk of a crash.

IF YOUR VEHICLE exhibits SYMPTOMS OF AN AUDIBLE CHIME, A MESSAGE CENTER ALERT, AND A RED BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR, immediately contact your dealer and request a service appointment for diagnosis and repair related Safety Recall 16S24. Provide the dealer with the Vin. of your vehicle, which is printed near your name at the beginning of this letter."

NHTSA Action Number: PE16003 Master Cylinder External Leak
SUMMARY:
On May 23, 2016, Ford Motor Company (Ford) submitted a Defect Information Report (DIR) to NHTSA regarding a master cylinder defect that could result in loss of the front brake circuit in approximately 225,012 model year 2013 through 2014 Ford F-150 vehicles equipped with 3.5-liter GTDI engines and built at the Dearborn Truck Plant from August 1, 2013 through August 22, 2014; and the Kansas City Assembly Plant from August 1, 2013 through August 31, 2014 (NHTSA Recall #16V-345, Ford Recall #16S24). Ford indicated that the rearmost cup seal in the brake master cylinder may roll, resulting in leakage from the brake fluid reservoir to the brake booster. According to Ford's DIR, "Depending on the amount of brake fluid loss from the brake master cylinder into the brake booster, the driver will experience an audible chime, message center alert, red brake warning light in the instrument cluster and may begin to experience a change in brake pedal travel and feel. In the event that a loss of brake fluid is substantial enough to reduce brake function to the front wheels, the driver may experience longer pedal travel, increased pedal effort, and extended stopping distance, increasing the risk of a crash. Full braking function would remain in the rear wheel brake circuit." Ford's recall will replace the master cylinder and, if the master cylinder is leaking, also replace the brake booster. Seventy-three (73) of the complaints received by ODI contained vehicle identification number (VIN) information required to determine date of build and recall applicability. ODI's analysis found that 66 complaints to ODI and 278 complaints to Ford involving vehicles built in the range covered by 16V-345, resulting in an overall complaint rate of 152.9 incidents per 100,000 vehicles. Twelve (12) crash incidents were reported, including 11 with VIN information. All 11 crash incidents with VIN information reported involve vehicles covered by Ford's recall. ODI's analysis identified 7 ODI complaints and 36 Ford complaints in the 194,139 subject vehicles built outside of the build range for 16V-345, resulting in a complaint rate of 22.1 incidents per 100,000 vehicles. Ford indicated that warranty return analyses identified issues with minor internal leakage between circuits due to internal contamination caused by supplier assembly plant cleanliness concerns in these vehicles. Ford assessed the internal leak condition as an early-life condition with minimal safety risk that does not result in loss of fluid or circuit failure. ODI will continue to monitor complaints in subject vehicles not included in 16V-345. No complaints have been identified in MY 2013 through 2014 Ford F-150 vehicles equipped with other engine options. The recall action initiated by the manufacturer appears to address the safety risks identified by this investigation. This preliminary evaluation is closed. FORD RECALLS F-150, F-650 AND F-750 TRUCKS IN 3 RECALLS

September 27, 2017 — Ford is having truck problems, enough problems to cause the automaker to issue three recalls for three separate problems. Z  :(

However, the combined number of recalled trucks is only about 780, with the majority of the trucks recalled to fix problems that could cause the seat belts to fail in a crash.

Ford F-150 and Super Duty

About 624 model year 2017 Ford F-150 and Super Duty trucks have weld problems that can affect the seat belt buckle attachment brackets on the front passenger seats. Ford says there is a seat track for the manual passenger seat, and insufficient welds may exist between the seat belt anchor and the frame for the seat cushion.

If the welding job isn't strong enough, the seat belt buckle may not hold the passenger in a crash. A passenger flying loose in a crash could be a disaster, but the automaker says it doesn't know of any injuries or crashes related to the bad welds.

About 504 trucks are in the U.S., 63 are in Mexico and the remaining 57 are in Canada, but no matter where the trucks are located, Ford dealers will need to replace the front passenger seat tracks.

Ford F-150 truck owners with questions should call 866-436-7332 and ask about recall number 17C17.

Ford F-650 and F-750

Tie-rod issues have caused Ford to recall 77 model year 2015 F-650 and F-750 trucks with parts that weren't torqued to minimum specifications.

The automaker says the nuts and cotter pins on the front axle tie-rod may not have been tightened to specification. A loose tie-rod can disconnect from the steering system and send the truck out of control because the driver will lose the ability to steer.

Ford recalls trucks to fix door latches that can freeze and fail to open

October 18, 2017 — Ford F-150
door latch problems have caused the automaker to recall more than 1.3 million 2015-2017 Ford F-150 and 2017 Super Duty trucks after years of complaints about door latches freezing, causing the doors to open while driving.

FORD RECALLS 2017 F-150 OVER TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS

October 26, 2017 — The same day Ford recalled 15,000 model year 2018 F-150 trucks for problems related to gear shift levers, the automaker also announced a recall of 15,000 model year 2017 F-150s for their own shift lever problems.

The 2017 trucks are equipped with 10-speed automatic transmissions that can remain in gear no matter where the gear shift lever is positioned. Ford says a pin that attaches the transmission shift linkage to the transmission can come out, leaving the shift lever unable to change gears.

The shift lever indicator may display the wrong information and the key can be removed even if the truck is not in PARK. This will cause a warning chime and a message in the instrument cluster, but the truck won't start if the transmission is not in NEUTRAL or PARK.

Then there is the very real problem of the truck rolling away if a driver doesn't apply the parking brake. However, Ford doesn't know of any reported crashes or injuries related to the transmission problems.

The automaker says some of the F-150 trucks were built in Kansas City between September 2016 and August 2017, while the remaining trucks were built in Michigan between August 2016 and July 2017.

About 11,783 of the recalled trucks are in the U.S., 3,169 are in Canada and 701 are in Mexico.

Ford dealers will remove the roll pins and replace them with updated parts, but for now F-150 owners should make sure the parking brakes are applied at all times when the trucks are parked.

There has been no recall date announced, but concerned truck owners may call Ford at 866-436-7332 and refer to recall number 17S36.  Z

SSM 46896 – 2018 F-150 – 2.7L Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection (GTDI)/3.5L GTDI – Transport Mode

It is important to keep 2018 F-150 vehicles equipped with a 2.7L GTDI or 3.5L GTDI engine in Transport Mode until the vehicle is being prepared for customer delivery.

Transport mode reduces battery drain during extended periods when the vehicle is not in use and contains an alternate calibration that reduces the chance of spark plug fouling during engine idle and or frequent engine start and stop events when engine does not read normal operating temperature.

Ford recalls 350,000 trucks, SUVs for transmission issue.
The vehicles could roll when put into park.

The recall includes the latest versions of the F-150 and Expedition.

Ford is issuing two separate safety recalls to fix mechanical issues affecting control of the transmissions on certain 2017 and 2018 models. The automaker says it's aware of one reported accident with an injury related to the the first and largest recall.

That safety recall affects nearly 350,000 pickups and SUVs from the 2018 model year to fix a potentially unseated gear shift cable locking clip that could leave the transmission in a gear state different from what the driver selects — meaning the vehicle could move even when placed in park, if the parking brake isn't activated, with no warning message on the instrument panel or warning chime when the driver-side door is opened. The recall affects 2018 F-150, F-650 and F-750 trucks and 2018 Expeditions equipped with six- and 10-speed automatic transmissions.

Dealers will inspect the vehicles to ensure that the shift cable locking clip was properly installed and will secure the locking clip at no charge to the customer if it was not.
The recall reference number is 18S10.
The affected vehicles are:
2018 Ford F-150 trucks built at Dearborn Assembly Plant between Jan. 5, 2017, and Feb. 16, 2018
2018 Ford F-150s built at Kansas City Assembly Plant between Jan. 25, 2017, and Feb. 16, 2018
2018 Ford Expedition SUVs built at the Kentucky Truck Plant from April 3, 2017, to Jan. 30, 2018
2018 Ford F-650 and F-750 medium-duty commercial trucks built at Ohio Assembly Plant between April 25, 2017, and March 9, 2018
The second recall targets 161 F-150s and Expeditions, Lincoln Navigators and Ford Mustangs equipped with 10R80 transmissions that may be missing a roll pin that attaches the park pawl rod guide clip to the transmission case. FORD RECALLS F-150S, EXPEDITIONS AND LINCOLN NAVIGATORS
F :oord recalls 7,500 trucks and SUVs because of welding problems related to the fuel pumps.  Z   ???

JUNE 13, 2018 — Ford has fuel pump problems that affect about 7,500 model year 2018 Ford F-150 trucks and 2018 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs equipped with 3.5-liter GTDI V6 engines.

The trucks and SUVs have misaligned welds between the high-pressure fuel pump housings and their mounting flanges that can allow fatigue cracks and fractures.

This in turn will cause the fuel pumps to move out of their intended positions. Ford says the seals of the cam covers or fuel lines will be affected and possibly allow oil or fuel to leak.

Although oil or fuel could possibly leak and make contact with an ignition source, Ford is unaware of any fires, crashes or injuries related to the fuel pumps.

The recall includes 5,645 trucks and SUVs in the U.S., another 1,625 in Canada and 310 vehicles in Mexico.

Ford didn't say when the recall will begin, but dealers will replace the fuel pumps, the high-pressure fuel discharge tubes and the mounting bolts.

Affected customers with questions should call 866-436-7332 and refer to recall number 18S17.

Some 2017-2018 F-150 vehicles equipped with a 3.5L EcoBoost engine built at Kansas City Assembly Plant on or before 23-Feb-2018 or Dearborn Truck Plant on or before 26-Feb-2018 may exhibit an oil leak from the oil pan RTV seal.

Replace the oil pan following the procedure in Workshop Manual (WSM) Section, 303-01.

After removing the oil pan, it is suggested to allow the crankcase to drain over night to minimize the chance of contaminating the sealing rail.

Prepare the engine sealing surface following the procedure in WSM Section, 303-00.

Proper usage of the Motorcraft® Metal Surface Prep Wipes is critical.

If possible, allow the new RTV sealant to cure for 4 hours before refilling the engine with oil.

Correctly following the WSM procedures is critical.

Skipping or improperly completing steps may result in repeat oil pan leaks.

1.4 MILLION FORD F-150 TRUCKS INVESTIGATED FOR B-PILLAR FIRES
Government looks at seat belt pretensioners causing fires in the B pillars during F-150 . Z

AUGUST 7, 2018 — More than 1.4 million Ford F-150 SuperCrew trucks are under federal investigation after reports of seat belt pretensioners causing fires in B pillars during crash events.

In a crash, seat belt pretensioners help to secure an occupant in their seat quicker than the blink of an eye. They pull the occupant into a seated position in an effort to ensure the occupant makes proper contact with the airbag.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says it has received five reports about fires that occurred during crashes of 2015-2018 Ford F-150 SuperCrew .

Its an official Recall now!  Z

FORD RECALLS 1.6 MILLION F-150S AFTER 17 FIRES IN THE U.S.
SEPTEMBER 6, 2018 — Ford is recalling more than 1.6 million model year 2015-2018 Ford F-150 Regular Cab and SuperCrew Cab trucks in the U.S. after 17 reports of fires caused after the seat belt pretensioners deployed in crash incidents.     ???

The automaker says a front seat belt pretensioner deployment can cause an excessive amount of sparks from the pretensioner devices and ignite the carpet, insulation and material inside the B-pillar areas.

Some reports say the fires went out on their own or were localized, while other reports say the fires spread.

Between April and October 2017, Ford knew of four reports of localized interior fires that occurred on 2015-2016 F-150s after the seat belt pretensioners deployed. An investigation on the four trucks was opened that focused on the front seat belt pretensioners (both retractor and lap anchor), electrical wiring, insulation and carpeting.

FORD F-150 MASTER CYLINDER PROBLEMS CAUSE HUGE LAWSUIT.

Ford class-action lawsuit alleges Hitachi master cylinders in F-150 trucks cause brake fluid leaks. Z

SEPTEMBER 18, 2018 — Ford F-150 master cylinder problems have caused a proposed class-action lawsuit that alleges the trucks suddenly lose their brakes because the Hitachi master cylinders have piston cup seals that allow brake fluid to leak.

The lawsuit includes owners and lessees of 2013-2018 Ford F-150 trucks that allegedly have front brake circuits that can suddenly fail.

According to the plaintiffs, the front brakes are responsible for 75 percent of the truck's braking force and without the front brakes the trucks can fail to stop, or in some cases even slow down.

Drivers of the 2013-2018 Ford F-150 trucks report rolling through stop signs and red lights and watching as their trucks roll into objects because the master cylinders lose their brake fluid.

All 2013-2018 Ford F-150s use master cylinders supplied by Hitachi, with the pistons fitted with just a single cup seal responsible for containing pressurized brake fluid. The lawsuit alleges this is unusual because pistons within master cylinders are usually fitted with two cup seals to ensure that fluid does not leak out of the master cylinders.

The Hitachi master cylinders allegedly place twice the sealing loads on its single piston cup seals. But the plaintiffs also claim the design relocates the usual placement of the cup seal from the piston to the master cylinder's bore where the single cup seal rests in a groove machined into the bore of the master cylinder.

FORD RECALLS 410,000 F-SERIES TRUCKS AFTER 3 FIRES
Engine block heater cables blamed for 3 fires while the cables were plugged into outlets.
Ford Recalls 410,000 F-Series Trucks . -Z

DECEMBER 21, 2018 — More than 410,280 Ford F-Series trucks are at risk of fires while the engine block heater cables are plugged into wall outlets. Three fires are already blamed on block heater cables that were corroded by water and other contaminants.

2015-2019 Ford F-150

2017-2019 Ford F-350 Super Duty
2017-2019 Ford F-450 Super Duty
2017-2019 Ford F-550 Super Duty
Ford learned of three truck fires in September and October, with two of those fires occuring in 2017 F-150s and one in a 2017 Ford F-450 Super Duty. All three fires occurred in Canada when the engine block heaters were plugged into wall outlets.

Ford analyzed warranty data for F-Series trucks with block heaters and found reports of heaters that stopped working, household breakers and outlets that tripped, reports of smoke and allegations of cables that melted.

Ford says a combination of things make the engine block heater cable susceptible to moisture, including a female connector angled upward at a 45-degree angle. In addition, the vehicles have low mounting positions and unshielded or exposed mounting locations.

Trucks located in areas where road salt is used are more likely to experience problems because of corrosion to the splice connector terminals. Over time, the corrosion can cause short-circuits in the splice connectors.

If electrical shorts are causing trouble, owners may receive warnings in the form of block heater failures or if home breakers or outlets trip. Customers should also be on guard for buzzing sounds or smoke or sparks when the heater cables are plugged into wall outlets.

Ford says a driver shouldn't worry about problems unless the truck is parked and the block heater cable is plugged into an electrical outlet.

The Ford truck engine block heater cable recall is expected to begin January 7, 2019. Ford dealers will either seal the block heater cables or replace them.

Concerned truck owners should call 866-436-7332 and refer to Ford's recall number, 18S45

FORD F-150 TRANSMISSION LAWSUIT SAYS REVERSE DOESN'T WORK
California class-action says Ford F-150 trucks have dangerous transmission defects. Z

DECEMBER 30, 2018 — A Ford F-150 transmission lawsuit alleges the trucks won't shift into reverse gear unless the ignitions are shut off and turned back on.

According to the lawsuit, the transmissions have defects that cause the trucks to consistently fail to engage reverse gear when drivers shift to reverse. The plaintiff claims he was told the reverse gear failures are a "normal characteristic" of the transmissions.

However, the problem allegedly creates serious safety hazards because the trucks are not fit for ordinary use...

RECALL ORDERED OVER CORDS
About 327,000 Ford F-150 and Super Duty trucks at risk of fires from damaged block heater cords. Z

APRIL 12, 2019 — A Ford engine block heater recall has been issued for 327,000 model year 2015-2019 F-150 and 2017-2019 F-Series Super Duty trucks that were recalled for the same heater cord problems in December 2018.

The engine block heater cord recall includes about 131,000 trucks in the U.S. and more than 196,000 in Canada, all that were part of the previous recall of 874,000 trucks in 2018.

The automaker says the splice connectors for the heater cords may have been damaged during previous recall repairs, damage that can cause multiple problems. The engine block heater could fail to function or the damaged cord could trip breakers and outlets. It's also possible fires could occur from overheated and melted wires while the engine heater is plugged .

2018 – F-150 – Ambient Lighting – Multi-Color Settings Inoperative

2018 F-150 vehicles equipped with ambient lighting will only have a single color.

The multi-color option, ability to dim and turn on/off are no longer available in 2018 model year.

No repair attempts should be made to address the ability to enable color change, dim or turn on/off the ambient lighting feature.

I spent about 5 minutes trying to figure our how to adjust the color.  Never found a way.  Now if I could just find the CD player....

De-contenting a $66k truck.  Only Ford would think that's a good idea.

Soon car payments are going to be mortgages.

Mine is now higher than my mortgage.  Granted, I have a low mortgage.

There's two ways to look at it...
1. The sticker on my Lincoln 6 years ago was a hair over $50k.  The truck has all of the same features plus additional safety stuff and more advanced electronics PLUS has the capability to tow 12,700 lbs.  So, $16k more, but it's 6 years newer, has more features, and substantially more capability.
2. It's a, not built all that well, Ford and should never cost this much.

What are really, really poor values to me are XLT's.  I test drove a $56k window sticker XLT that lacked substantial features that come standard in a Corolla or Honda Fit.  Granted, Ford prices them stupid high so they can throw $10k worth of incentives at them, but at the end of the day they are still expensive and stripped of features.  With just a bit of negotiating I got $9k off of sticker on a Platinum that is actually pretty darn nice with lots of features.

Still, that makes it $57k.  So, where's my color changing ambient lighting and CD player!!!

Some places offer 110 month loans on a little as 25k$ .. and with average consumer credit ratings being in the 600's ... that 110 months is at 3.x% or higher :(  it is pure insanity.   As to truck prices, they were always naturally higher due to utility nature... then the ad campaigns (particularly out here in the PNW) made them more desirable  'safer'  ... then they turned into pavement princess cars with all the car niceties and the market demand went up.. and up... and now we have 'super platinum edtion' trucks that never even see sod in the bed,  and Eddie Bauer/Harely Davidson chrome plated rigs that see more wax than a bikini shop.

FORD F-150 RECALL TO PREVENT ENGINE HEATER CABLE FIRES
Ford recalls 33,500 trucks with engine block heater cords that may suffer electrical shorts. Z

FEBRUARY 28, 2020 — Ford F-150 fires are possible if the trucks are 2015-2016 models equipped with engine heaters and 3.5-liter GTDI engines.

A recall of more than 33,500 F-150 trucks is necessary because of engine block heater cables that are the wrong length and may not have enough protection against heat.

High temperatures can cause an electrical short, disable the heater and trip the breakers or outlets used with the cables. This can occur when the F-150 is parked and the engine block heater is plugged into an outlet..

Ford F-150 customers with questions should call 866-436-7332 and refer to recall number 20S08.
