Title: better air + better tires = new PB
Post by: Brucelinc on September 22, 2018, 03:41:23 PM
I mounted up some drag radials on my Mustang and finally got into the 11s.    The 60s are not very good and that is strictly driver caution.   I had never run drag radials before and I have heard of Mustangs popping half-shafts if the hook TOO good.   Since my track is 110 miles from home, I launched it like a Grandma.   With more practice and more aggression, I think the car has 11.8 or even 11.7 in it.   Not too shabby.

Congratulations!!!  Those are some great runs and I agree if your 60ft comes down even in the low 1.8's you'll see an 11.7 I bet!  What brand and size drag radials?

Mickey Thompson ET street R in 275/40-17.   I ran 20 PSI which was probably too much.   I was getting a bit of wheelspin on the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts but 100% better than the stock tires.    I also didn't do a very good job with my burn-outs, either.   Here is what they look like on the car:

No launch control.  It does have a dragstrip mode that makes shifts occur at 7400 rpm and it shifts super fast and hard.   Has line lock for burn outs.

Congrats Bruce, not bad at all.  You should be pretty happy with those runs!

Car is gorgeous man! And great runs. That 5.0 with the 10 speed impresses me more and more every day.

I loved running my Livernois tuned MKS ecoboost at the track.   It was super consistent and felt like it could do it forever without complaint.  It also got a lot of attention because of it being such a sleeper.

After replacing the MKS with a Continental, it wasn't quite as much fun.   AJPturbo did a great job of tuning it and it ran well.   He also told me that he could do more especially with the transmission tuning.   However, I never felt quite as confident in running the Continental.   It ran hotter, wasn't quite as consistent, and didn't hook as smoothly.   It is a great highway cruiser but putting it on the track is like putting a super model in a mud wrestling event....maybe entertaining but it just doesn't seem right.

The Mustang is super fun.   Like the MKS, it is consistent, runs cool and feels like it could do it forever.   Plus, it is pretty fast.   It certainly lacks the tuning potential of the ecoboost since it is pretty well tuned straight from the factory.  An SHO running Meth and some bolt-ons would be as quick or maybe quicker.   The Mustang really needs an e85 tune or, better yet, a blower to be super fast.   I am thinking about those things for the future.

If any Minnesota or Wisconsin SHO owners are interested in going to Rock Falls in October, there are some events on their schedule and the air should be good.

Mike, you as a mopar guy will be surprised to hear that on the run where I had my slowest time (12.0), my competitor was a Hellcat!  Look at his 60 and you will see why I beat him.   He could not hook at all.  Very unusual.  They are normally much faster than I am.  He did have a stronger trap speed.

I finally sneaked into the 11.8 range (barely).   My speed was down a bit in these runs.   The DA was good but we had a stiff headwind and I think that hurt the trap speed by a couple of MPH.

Stock tune but drag radials.   The street tires hooked fine off the line but wheel hopped violently on the 1-2 shift.   The drag radials cured the hop.   I would like to get an E85 tune at some point.   Livernois has one for the 2015-2017 models but not for the '18s.   Torrie has an E85 tune but I would need a new SCT device.   My X4 is married to my Lincoln and I want to keep Brad's tune on it.

It's unreal how well the new gen coyotes and mustangs run....That's sweet Bruce. I have so much in my 2014 mustang with the twin turbos and all and I barely got into the 11.70's, granted my trap was about 131 though and I was on pure street tires with a manual trans.

But damn bruce that makes me want to throw an auto in mine and or get a new one!...Auto trans are tough to beat nowadays.

Nice job!

bruce, yes the mopar community is weary of the new 5.0 w/the 10 speed tranny. these new auto trannies mine an 8 & yours a 10 are unbelievable. a manual just can't compete with them. actual a scat pack will hook better than a hellcat, but once it hooks if it's an auto if will fly. good job & by the way, we have always know that on a ford white was the faster color. had a yellow 5.0 want to play the other day as was in my yellow scat, but highway was busy & had my turn coming. tried to get a lexus rcf to play the other day, i must admit it was a head turner & not an import car guy, but he wasn't in the mood. keep making us old guys look good bruce. my sho queen had a good year this year at shows in fact got an invite to the last show of the year. the best of best show. only 200 cars from the whole st louis area were invited & sho got the invite this year. trophies to best 50, not much chance there, but invite, is a big deal. only 8 of the members of my ford club & it's 150 members strong got invited. well good luck bruce.
