TSB 14-0113 (sorry, no PDF):

FORD:

2010-2014 Flex, Taurus
2013-2014 Explorer

LINCOLN:

2010-2014 MKS, MKT

ISSUE

Some 2010-2014 Flex, MKS, MKT, Taurus and 2013-2014 Explorer vehicles equipped with a 3.5L Gasoline
Turbocharged Direct Injection (GTDI) engine with an aluminum valve cover may exhibit excessive oil consumption and/or
excessive engine oil smoking condition from the tail pipe at idle during normal engine operating temperatures.

ACTION

Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) Valve. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-08.
2. Inspect for oil in the crankcase vent oil separator through the PCV valve opening. Is there presence of liquid oil, more  than slight vapor?
a. No - this article does not apply refer to WSM, Section 303-00 for Excessive Engine Oil Consumption.
b. Yes - proceed to Step 3.
3. Replace the right hand valve cover, refer to WSM, Section 303-01D.
4. Replace the crankcase vent oil separator, refer to WSM, Section 303-08.
5. Drive the vehicle at normal operating temperature for 20 minutes at constant highway speed to remove oil residue from catalytic converter.

Exactomundo!  Though I am guessing it would be harder to take the vehicle in with aftermarket downpipes & have 'em perform this TSB :(  Would like to learn more about the "crankcase vent oil separator".

That is a sticky situation. Stock cats eating up enough of a minor issue to not notice until the aftermarket ones are installed. Yet there's enough out there making it through stock cats to warrant a TSB.

I wonder how they diagnose this. Check for smoke from tailpipes? Bring it in and confirm, setup drop off date after the downpipes are put back to stock set?

Probably be easier to build a condensation trap/catch can for the PCV system than to try & get coverage if you have a non-OEM setup.  All dealer relationships though.  True, they put out a TSB, but are they being more proactive on this than other issues, or is it the same threshold?  What is the %age of incidents they are seeing?  Is their primary objective saving future catalytic converter replacement costs (emissions warranty usually far exceeds OEM/powertrain), or are they truly trying to fix the cause?  Who knows!

Not aware of one for the 2013+ SHO.  If there is one for the 2013+ could someone post it.... No TSB since the half shaft TSB that I know of... Is this for previous models?... maybe the other TSB thread?

Searched open web and here: http://www.revbase.com/BBBMotor/TSb/ (http://www.revbase.com/BBBMotor/TSb/) as this site usually has the complete TSB.

Is there a TSB regarding timing chain slop / play / rattle at cold start up on SHO's ? The F150 EB's have one - under emissions warranty for some reason ?? Occasionally I get a quick and light rattle at cold stat up's. I also just put in Mobile 1 Extended Performance Full Synthetic oil for the first time, but I don't see how that could contribute to it.....maybe just coincidence ?? My car otherwise seems to run flawlessly still. I'm at 50k miles now / 40K of them tuned.

Not that I know of, tho we have had 1 or 2 SHOs get repairs for timing chain stretch.  Usually, brief startup rattle is due to lack of oil lubrication, caused by filters with inadequate ADBV design.  It is also important the filter material be very very good so it doesn't breakdown and clog the tiny oil passages in & around the timing chain tensioner/cam phasers.  Did you use the stock MC filter, or aftermarket?  Stock is highly recommended, though at least one (glock-coma) uses a different one (Fram?) with PUP+ oil successfully to keep the rattle away.

I had a Purolator One filter and heard about a check valve in oil filters possibly allowing oil to flow back from the filter so I put a Motorcraft oil filter on with no changes. What is PUP+ ?

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Plus.  Gets a little confusing trying to separate out their varied "platinum" products though.

Actually a couple of current members have had them replaced under warranty.  It seems they can stretch, likely under hard acceleration from stop.  Symptoms varied from a rattle under the hood to increased throttle lag, and even increasing KR readings with timing pulls by the ECU.

Maybe one of them will chime in... As I remember it the actual rattle was only one member and the others were discovered while other problems were being investigated.

I'd assume your relationship with the dealer will determine whether they will perform the TSB even if it is "out of scope" per the problem definition.  Doesn't seem to be any technical reason why your vehicle wouldn't qualify if it's experiencing the issue.

I think this site is maintaining an active and current list of all TSB and recall notices. The latest power steering recall for my 2011 which was announced couple months ago is on the list.

If you change year in address bar you can search any year Taurus and further change allows search for other vehicles as well.

15S18/15V340/15V340000 (http://www.revbase.com/BBBMotor/TSb/DownloadPdf?id=190176):  Loss of Electric Power Steering Assist

Failure Of Electric Power Steering Assist

Affected Cars:
Ford Flex 2011, 2012, 2013; Fusion 2011, 2012; Taurus 2011, 2012, 2013
Lincoln MKS 2011, 2012, 2013; MKT 2011, 2012, 2013; MKZ 2011, 2012
Mercury Milan 2011

Original Recall from the NHTSA

Manufacturer's Report Date:  June 2, 2015
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 15V340000
NHTSA Action Number:  PE14030
Component: STEERING
Potential Number of Units Affected:  393,623

Summary:

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Ford Fusion vehicles without a 3.5L engine and Lincoln MKZ hybrid electric vehicles, 2011 Mercury Milan vehicles, 2011-2012 Ford Taurus, Ford Flex, Lincoln MKS, and Lincoln MKT vehicles equipped with a 3.5L GTDI engine and 2013 Ford Taurus, Ford Flex, Lincoln MKS, and Lincoln MKT vehicles equipped with any available engine. The affected vehicles have electric power steering assist systems that may shut down as a result of a steering motor sensor fault.

AN INTERMITTENT ELECTRICAL CONNECTION CAUSED BY QUALITY ISSUES PERTAINING TO CONFORMAL COAT CONTAMINATION AND RIBBON CABLE PIN MISALIGNMENT WITHIN THE STEERING GEAR MOTOR MAY LEAD TO A LOSS OF THE MOTOR POSITION SENSOR SIGNAL THAT MAY RESULT IN LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSIST. FORD IS AWARE OF 16 ACCIDENT ALLEGATIONS AND THREE INJURY ALLEGATIONS RELATED TO THIS CONDITION IN THE VEHICLES INCLUDED IN THIS FIELD ACTION. MOST OF THE ACCIDENT ALLEGATIONS REPORT THAT MINOR VEHICLE DAMAGE WAS INCURRED, TYPICALLY EITHER WHEEL DAMAGE RESULTING FROM CONTACT WITH A CURB OR MINOR BODY DAMAGE. THE INJURY ALLEGATIONS WERE ALL REPORTED AS MINOR WITH NO INDICATION THAT MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS SOUGHT FOR ANY OF THE INJURIES.

Consequence:

If the vehicle experiences a loss of power steering assist, extra steering effort will be required at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

IN THE EVENT OF A LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSIST, THE MECHANICAL LINKAGE BETWEEN THE STEERING WHEEL AND THE ROAD IS MAINTAINED AT ALL TIMES. THE STEERING SYSTEM WILL DEFAULT TO MANUAL STEERING MODE, ALLOWING THE VEHICLE TO BE STEERED IN A SAFE AND CONTROLLED MANNER. LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSIST IS UNLIKELY TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH ACCIDENTS AT HIGHER SPEEDS, AS THE AMOUNT OF ASSIST SUPPLIED IS INVERSELY PROPORTIONAL TO VEHICLE SPEED. LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSIST WOULD REQUIRE HIGHER STEERING EFFORT, ESPECIALLY AT LOWER SPEEDS, WHICH MAY RESULT IN AN INCREASED RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy:

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will check the Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC). If dealers find any loss of steering assist DTCs, the steering gear will be replaced, free of charge. If, no codes are found during the PSCM inspection, the PSCM software will be updated, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin July 20, 2015. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S18.

OWNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED BY MAIL AND INSTRUCTED TO TAKE THEIR VEHICLE TO A FORD OR LINCOLN DEALER TO HAVE THE POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE (PSCM) CHECKED FOR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS). IF NO LOSS OF STEERING ASSIST DTCS ARE PRESENT, DEALERS WILL UPDATE THE PSCM SOFTWARE. THE UPDATED PSCM SOFTWARE WILL PROVIDE STEERING ASSIST FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE DRIVE CYCLE IF A MOTOR POSITION SENSOR ENCODER FAULT OCCURS, AND A CLUSTER WARNING AND CHIME WILL BE PROVIDED. UPON SUBSEQUENT VEHICLE START-UPS, IF MULTIPLE FAULTS HAVE BEEN VERIFIED, STEERING ASSIST WILL BE REMOVED AND A CLUSTER WARNING AND CHIME WILL BE PROVIDED. IF ANY LOSS OF STEERING ASSIST DTCS ARE PRESENT, DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE STEERING GEAR. IF A VEHICLE HAS THE PSCM SOFTWARE UPDATED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THIS FIELD ACTION, AND LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSIST OCCURS AT A LATER DATE, THE OWNER WILL BE ABLE TO RETURN THEIR VEHICLE TO A FORD OR LINCOLN DEALER TO HAVE THE STEERING GEAR REPLACED IF IT OCCURS WITHIN A PERIOD OF 10 YEARS FROM THE WARRANTY START DATE FOR THE VEHICLE OR 150K MILES, WHICHEVER OCCURS FIRST. THERE WILL BE NO CHARGE FOR THIS SERVICE. FORD PROVIDED THE GENERAL REIMBURSEMENT PLAN FOR THE COST OF REMEDIES PAID FOR BY VEHICLE OWNERS PRIOR TO NOTIFICATION OF A SAFETY RECALL IN FEBRUARY 2015. THE ENDING DATE FOR REIMBURSEMENT ELIGIBILITY IS DECEMBER 31, 2015. FORD WILL FORWARD A COPY OF THE NOTIFICATION LETTERS TO DEALERS TO THE AGENCY WHEN AVAILABLE.

14C10/14V710/14V710000: Improper Airbag Suppression

Report Receipt Date: NOV 07, 2014
NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V710000
Component(s): SEATS

Vehicles:  FORD F-150 2014; FORD FLEX 2014

SUMMARY:
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2014 Ford F-150 and Flex vehicles manufactured March 1, 2014, to May 31, 2014. The affected vehicles were manufactured with a reduced clearance between the seat frame and the seat track assembly. This can cause the Occupant Classification System (OCS) to inaccurately register passenger weight and improperly suppress the passenger front airbag when the passenger seat is occupied by an adult passenger. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

CONSEQUENCE:
Improper suppression of the passenger airbag increases the risk of an injury to the seat occupant in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front passenger airbag.

REMEDY:
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will widen the gap between the seat frame and seat track assembly and recalibrate the seat OCS, free of charge. The recall began November 25, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 14C10.

Verify APIM Software Level
1.Determine the vehicles current accessory protocol interface module (APIM) software level (CCPU S/W).
2.Are the last five digits 15128 ?

Software Download Procedure

This procedure will update the APIM with the proper TDI provisioning pack patch for software version V3.8 (15128). The procedure requires a one-time software download onto a USB flash drive. The software may be loaded onto one or multiple universal serial bus (USB) flash drives. The USB flash drive(s) can then be used to update multiple vehicles following the Vehicle Software Installation procedure.

Minimum 500 Megabyte (MB) USB flash drive  is required. Using USB flash drives previously provided for FSAs 11A02 and 11A03 would ensure compatibility. Label USB flash drives to identify the software level contained on the drive. The download procedure will clear any data stored on the USB flash drive. Remove any important data prior to starting this procedure.

1.If you previously performed this procedure on a different vehicle and already have a USB flash drive loaded with this software update, proceed directly to the section for Vehicle Software Install.
2.Format USB flash drive:
3.Click on the link provided to download the software update. A hard wired internet connection is recommended. A download pop-up will appear with the selections to run, save or cancel.
4.When the download completes, a pop up window appears, select Open folder.
5.The file will be highlighted. Double click on the file.
6.A download warning may appear, if so, agree to continue by choosing Yes, OK or Run.
7.An extract pop up window will appear. The extract destination to the USB drive will need to be selected. To browse for the USB flash drive, select the Button with three dots located to the right of the pop up.
8.Scroll down and select Computer.
9.Select the USB drive/removable disk and click OK.
10.Select Extract.
11.Confirm USB drive contents. Select the USB drive located under My Computer. A folder named SyncMyRide and two files (autoinstall.lst and DONTINDX.msa) will be present on the USB flash drive; it's now ready for the Vehicle Software Installation Procedure.

Vehicle Software Install Procedure
1.This installation procedure may take up to 5 minutes.
2.Disconnect any USB devices or cables connected to the vehicle USB ports.
3.Start the engine. The engine must be running so the battery saver mode will not activate while performing this procedure.
4.Place automatic transmission gear selector in Park. Manual transmissions in neutral. Apply park brake on all vehicles.
5.Verify that the vehicle is not in transport mode.
6.If the vehicle is in transport mode, Refer to WSM, Section 419-10 to deactivate.
7.Allow the system to boot up and the home screen to appear on the FDIM.
8.Install the USB flash drive into one of the vehicle's media hub USB ports. The reprogramming procedure will start automatically.
9.When the programming is complete, Update Installed Successfully will appear on the screen. Press Ok and remove the USB flash drive from the USB port.

I had this happen on my 2013 MKS. Turned the car off and back on a few times and it was still showing audio off and I could not turn it on. I let it sit for about 30 minutes while I get ready to get back in the car to leave and it was working the next time I started it. Thats the only time I had this issue. Not sure if its the same problem described here.

Police Interceptor Utility, and 2016-2017 Model Year Flex and MKT
vehicles equipped with a 3.5L EcoBoost Engine — Turbocharger Oil
Supply Tube Inspection

OVERVIEW
In some of the affected vehicles, improperly brazed turbocharger oil supply tubes may leak engine oil on the turbocharger and surrounding components. An oil leak in the presence of an ignition source may increase the risk of fire. Dealers are to inspect the turbocharger oil supply tubes for leaks and replace if a leak is present.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.   With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. Please follow the procedures in Workshop Manual (WSM) Section 100-02.
NOTE: Use the 12 Volt Master UV Diagnostic Inspection Kit 164-R0756 or equivalent (Leak Detector) to carry out the following procedure for oil leak diagnosis.
2.   Add 29.6 ml (1 oz) of Dye-Lite Gasoline Engine Oil Leak Detection Dye to a minimum of 0.47L (1/2 qt) and a maximum of 0.95L (1 qt) engine oil and fill through the engine oil fill. Thoroughly premix the gasoline engine oil leak detection dye or it will not have enough time to reach the crankcase, oil galleries and seal surfaces during this particular 15 minute test. The additive must be mixed well with oil and added through the oil fill. Check the level on the oil level indicator to determine what amount of oil to premix. If it is in the middle of the crosshatch area or below the full mark, use 0.95L (1 qt). If it is at the full mark, use 0.47L (1/2 qt).
3.   Run the engine for 15 minutes. Stop the engine and inspect the RH and LH turbocharger oil supply tubes for leaks using the 12 Volt Master UV Diagnostic Inspection Kit 164-R0756 or equivalent (Leak Detector). A clear bright yellow or orange area will identify the leak. See Figure 1.
NOTE: The LH turbocharger oil supply tube can be inspected from above, and the RH turbocharger oil supply tube must be inspected from below with the vehicle positioned on a hoist.
•   If a leak is found at either turbocharger oil supply tube, replace the tube. Please follow the procedures in WSM Section 303-04.
•   If a leak is not found, verify the oil level is within the upper and lower oil indicator marks.
Remove oil if it registers above the full mark. No additional service is required.

That code also comes up as faulty wiring or a shorted throttle body wiring harness and even a bad pcm.

I remember you having problems with flashing the car and the ecu locking up.

Seems wierd that the throttle body blade seized up after all this time...you can usually push the throttle blade open with your finger...its just a plate on a shaft in a hole
What R U talking about ? that throttle blade will sever your finger right off if not disconnected properly and would advise caution.
It could also be a faulty electrical connector. Z

Im just  saying if you took off the pipe and looked at the closed throttle blade you can easily push it with your finger if you were seeing if it was stuck

thanks no worries
as posted above i tried to use a wrench on the outside of the tb to free up the blade - didn't move
the warranty one does not allow access that way its sealed off

2017 Explorer/Taurus/Police – 3.5L or 3.7L TiVCT Engine – Illuminated MIL – DTC P0740 or P0743 – Built On 14-Jun-2017 And Through 21-Jun-2017

Some 2017 Explorer/Taurus/Police vehicles equipped with a 3.5L or 3.7L twin independent variable camshaft timing (TiVCT) engine, built on 14-Jun-2017 and through 21-Jun-2017, may exhibit an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0740 or P0743 stored in powertrain control module (PCM) memory.

Prior to replacing any components, check pin 14 in connecter c168 for correct fitment, tension, push out, or any signs of damage.

If terminal replacement is necessary, pigtail kit 8U2Z-14S411-ACB can be ordered to obtain the terminal with wire lead.

If no concerns are found with C168, follow normal diagnostic routines for the fault codes.

2017 Explorer/Taurus/Police Interceptor – Fixed Brake Pedal – Brake Drag – Built On 19-May-2017 And Through 30-May-2017

Some 2017 Explorer, Taurus, Police Interceptor vehicles built on 19-May-2017 and through 30-May-2017 equipped with a fixed brake pedal assembly may exhibit a brake drag concern or residual pressure in the brake system with the brake pedal fully released.

This may be due to an interference condition between the brake pedal arm stop lamp switch bracket and the booster push rod clevis pin bracket.

Inspect for a touch condition between the brake pedal arm stop lamp switch bracket and the brake booster push rod clevis pin bracket.

If a touch condition exists, replace the brake pedal assembly.

Safety Recall 17S23 – Electronic Power Assist Steering Heat Shield Fastener Inspection – 2017 Ford Explorer & Taurus

August 28, 2017 NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V530000
Loss of Power Assisted Steering

If the heat shield detaches, the steering gear may overheat, increasing the steering effort required by the driver, especially at lower speeds, and increasing the risk of a crash.

NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V530000

Manufacturer Ford Motor Company

Components STEERING

Potential Number of Units Affected 253

Summary

In some of the affected vehicles, the fasteners used to secure the electronic power assist steering (EPAS) heat shield may not have sufficient corrosion protection.  If the fasteners do not have sufficient corrosion protection, they may not retain the heat shield over time, exposing the steering gear to higher than expected temperatures.  If the steering gear connectors melt, the driver may experience loss of assist accompanied by the fault message "SERVICE POWER STEERING NOW" in the instrument cluster.  Loss of power steering assist while driving would result in higher steering efforts, especially at lower speeds.

Remedy

Ford will notify owners, and dealers to inspect and replace the heat shield fasteners as needed, free of charge. The recall began on September 13, 2017. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 17S23.

Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov (http://www.safercar.gov).

SSM 47119 – 2011-2018 Explorer/Police Interceptor Utility/Police Interceptor Sedan Taurus/Flex/MKT and 2011-2016 MKS – 3.5L EcoBoost – Engine Assembly Replacement

During 3.5L EcoBoost engine assembly replacement, inspect the color of the positive crank ventilation (PCV) camshaft cover adaptor located next to the high pressure fuel pump on the original engine and compare to the service replacement engine.

The adaptor color of the service replacement engine must match the original engine.

If the adaptor on the original engine is green, install a green adaptor (HL2E-6762-AA) on the service replacement engine.

If the adapter is removed from the camshaft cover, damage will occur to the adapter locking mechanism.

Make sure detached pieces of the locking mechanism do not fall into the open port during removal.

2015-2016 Edge/MKX And 2013-2016 Explorer/Taurus – Automatic Transmission Fluid Leaking From The PTU Temperature Sensor

Some 2015-2016 Edge/MKX and 2013-2016 Explorer/Taurus vehicles may exhibit a condition where automatic transmission fluid (ATF) may appear to be leaking from the power transfer unit (PTU) temperature sensor.

ATF in the area of the PTU temperature sensor may be the result of a leaking right hand (RH) intermediate shaft seal deflector.

Replacement of the PTU temperature sensor will not resolve this condition.

To correct the condition replace the RH intermediate shaft seal.

Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 308-07.

2016 Explorer/Flex/MKT/Taurus/MKS/Transit – 3.5L Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection (GTDI) – Illuminated MIL – DTCs P2096, P2097, P2098 And/Or P2099

Some 2016 Explorer, Flex, MKT, Taurus, MKS and Transit vehicles equipped with a 3.5L GTDI engine may exhibit an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P2096, P2097, P2098 and/or P2099 in the powertrain control module (PCM) memory.

This may be due to incorrect calibration values setting a system DTC instead of a circuit fault DTC. If the vehicle exhibits DTC P2096, P0297, P0298 and/or P2099, perform Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) pinpoint test DW Steps 9-12 first to validate the Heated Oxygen Sensor wiring.

If no concerns are found, continue with PC/ED pinpoint test DZ.
Is this something to be concerned about? I just recently started getting this code... Do I need to visit a dealer?

You certainly could take it to the dealer, but I would clear codes and KAM first, see if the code(s) return.  If they do and you are up to it, run the tests as indicated per the attachment in this post.  If there is no result, or no visual indication of wiring issues, take it to the dealer.

The code is for the upstream sensor, so probably not.  The upstream sensors are known to fail periodically though.  Mostly bank 2 sometimes bank 1.

Nice thank you. I fear that sensor there might need replacing because the OBX downpipes position place it where the end of is bent really bad and hitting the oil cooling lines.

I had my both Front primary 02 sensors changed @ 54K Since they run really rich! It might be beneficial to have them Both changed IMO considering there wide-band 02's !  Z

If the 02 sensor is detecting a lean/rich condition by the ECM it should be the UP-STREAM Wide-Band 02's IMO! The 02 sensor is not giving the fuel control closed loop control it needs to control the fuel correctly! Please Correct me if i'm wrong.  Z
