Title: What would you change to the internals if you had to do a rebuild?
Post by: Grim Reaper on May 17, 2014, 05:42:13 PM
Just curious what you change if you had to rebuild your 3.5?

I think I would want forged pistons (to handle more boost), port the heads and either change the cams or have them ground for more duration.

I think the stock forged rods and crank are fine.

If they are powdered metal rods I would want them gone.

They are...

Hopefully better than the powdered metal rods they used in the power strokes

Pistons, sleeves, rods, port and polish all passages, heavier bushing/bearings, improved IC (ya' I know it's actually out of the engine), Larger turbos, larger capacity fuel pump and larger injectors, better oil/tranny/PTU coolers and increased PTU oil capacity.... and the list goes on.

I cannot say about the Transverse V6s, but the V6 used in the Ecoboost F150 are supposed to be forged rods, along with the crank.

CP Carillo rods and pistons, stock block unless you did damage when you broke.
CP Carillo made the rods and pistons for the Ford Racing ALMS car, the ones I had them made for us are stock size or can be .030 or .060 over.
Stock size you can just balance the crank/rods/pistons and slap in the block and go.
The high end setup they rate the rods for 1400HP...

1400 HP???  At that level, we could run in 4-cylinder deactivated mode 100% and still be close to 400 AWHP :D

I bought a stock rod and stock piston from a transverse engine and sent it to them for replication, they have sets in stock now ready to ship.
I was way in advance but felt long term it would be the best option, if we had more high HP guys I'd probably build a couple of short blocks and have them ready.
@TunerBoost I also need Tracy to port and polish a set of heads for us so we can offer those as well.
In the future I will be carrying throttle bodies, short blocks, long blocks and heads for people to swap, just waiting for Tracy....
:D
