Title: OBX downpipes available for 10+ SHO
Post by: Colorado-SHOBro on April 25, 2017, 02:31:35 AM
was just made aware that OBX is making downpipes for our cars. just putting it out there as i haven't previously seen this. in my previous platform OBX had a lot of fitment issues and often had to be modified to be installed so generally i'm not really a fan of the brand. not to mention they don't seem to have a catted option available. anyhow here it is. i would be interested to get feedback from someone who attempts install of these pipes.

I might be a willing guinea pig on those...

I've ran OBX exhaust products on both my Dodge Stealths for years and have no complaints other than some needed "finessing" during install.  I've definitely heard that their fitment can sometimes be an issue tho, so that's the gamble on these downpipes.

Very interested in your results if you go this route. I'd like to grab a set at some point if they fit decently.

I heard good things from some muscle forums about obx. it's just steel, as long as the fit is good.

I must say that these are pricey, but then again, some other brands are even more pricier.

Anyone tried these yet? If everyone pitches in $20 ill buy a set and try them for research.

bueller? lol one thing I noticed is that if you go to the OBX website, there is NO mention of any products fitting the SHO. I sent them an email notifying them of the interest within the community and to see if they had any install guides or if they were willing to give out a set at a discount in order to get marketing material that could be used to increase sales.

Still open if anyone wants in on my $20 crowdfund idea... pitch in $20 and if it turns out to be a good buy then you'll save hundreds off SW and Livernois :)

I am interested to see if these fit well. I know there were several of us that ran their long tubes on our Lightnings without issue. Most of the complaints as far as quality that I saw on OBX, were for their turbo headers for four bangers. They had issues with cracks at the turbo flange. Never really saw too many complaints on their other parts though.

I may end up being a guinea pig on these soon if nobody else bites.

well there goes my proposal haha. Who did you buy through? It worries me that these aren't listed on the OBX Racing website either.

people are not going to pitch in to buy you performance parts to 'guinea pig' when we have a pretty flooded downpipe market.  PPE, Livernois, SW and even unleashed used to have a set. For people to be in the least bit interested, you'd need to perform side by side comparisons on a dyno between stock and these.  Besides- your math means ~25 people for just the parts, more with runs on a dyno, which is a pretty high figure especially when you segment the market down to vehicles that the part would fit on and then again by those that are interested in purchasing downpipes in the future.

Now bring a new part, such as a CAC, then you'll have some interest

They are not known for quality in the car scenes I came from, known for cheapness and bad fitment......

3 companies selling bent piping for 400% profit is hardly a flooded market. Flooded is the Mustang market where 200 different companies make midpipes and you can buy stainless steel mandrel bent pips for $300.

I bought them from a vendor called racingpartsdepot on ebay. Ordered them Sunday night. They shipped from California and arrived in Southern Indiana on Friday. They were packaged very well. The construction seems nice. Heavy guage pipe. All of the welds look good. I will post some pictures tomorrow. They are at the shop. I will post pics of the pipes as well as a review of the fit/install.

OK guys. I installed these on my son's 13' SHO. Overall they aren't bad for the money. The gaskets that come with them are junk. Either reuse yours, or buy new metal gaskets. Here are pics before they were installed.

Here are the installed pics. The upper O2 bung on the rear pipe is clocked wrong, but doesn't cause any issues. This pic is through the passenger fender well. The stock pipes the O2 was pointing toward the firewall.

(http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m555/Brandon_Reisinger/20170723_153906_zpsvdplwq8c.jpg) (http://s1131.photobucket.com/user/Brandon_Reisinger/media/20170723_153906_zpsvdplwq8c.jpg.html)

On the front pipe, the lower O2 was clocked wrong. The stock pipes have the O2 exit to the passenger side. On these it exits driver side. The wire wouldn't reach the connector. I had to pull a locator where the O2's connector is located on the AC compressor. It works for now. I think I am going to get a low band O2 for a Focus or Escape that has a longer wire on it. This pic is kind of dark, but you can see the O2.

(http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m555/Brandon_Reisinger/20170723_153539_zpsedz6cdzg.jpg) (http://s1131.photobucket.com/user/Brandon_Reisinger/media/20170723_153539_zpsedz6cdzg.jpg.html)

The biggest issue to me was that the two pipes actually meet and touch around the rear motor mount. I thought about heating and slightly denting one of them to remedy this, but they don't rattle or anything else so I haven't done anything with it yet.

Overall, I am ok with them. I wish the two pipes didn't touch and that the lower O2 on the front pipe had been clocked right. Not bad for saving $200 though.

Is it just the angle in the pictures or do they hang WAAYY low?  Curious if it causes any clearance issues on speed bumps and such.

I see that also.  They seem to move downward after the first big bend and then bend back up to meet with the factory exhaust. Not sure why?

My PPE pipes decrease ground clearance and rub on the undertray due to their larger diameter, but they tuck up tightly.  I wish they weren't touching/melting the undertray, but I don't know if that's avoidable with their increased diameter.  Took a few miles, but they have "clearanced" the undertray.

It's sounds all to familiar to the Stage 3 DP which the bung was mounted on the wrong side, especially being a wide - band 02 sensor.
There is an 02 sensor extension which might work.
I think SBS had one I believe. Z
Best of luck and hope everything works out in your favor.

thanks for updating the thread SVT 54! overall that's what I would expect from OBX . . functional but far from perfect. they usually just copy an existing aftermarket option already in production but fall short in some way. other than the fitment issues the material and welds seem pretty quality though.

not that I would expect much to come of it, but for betterment of the platform I would suggest sending your feedback and pictures to OBX in hopes they can revise their product to fix some of the issues for future buyers.
i wouldn't hesitate to pound in the pipes where they touch to get some extra clearance.

and please do update with any info in the future!

thanks for the update! They actually look pretty good. The bump on the bottom is kinda weird, but could've been for something the test car had installed or something (there may be a clearance item in the Interceptor or something). The only think that worries me is the O2 sensor placement being a different angle from OEM. This could cause skewed readings, and possible puddling of Ethanol fuels.

Who are you tuned by? Have you requested a revision?

the 2nd o2 is for emissions.

Regarding the wiring not reaching the o2 bung, you can probably use an o2 bung spacer/cel eliminator. They are about 2-3 inches long and may help shorten the distance you need.

Good catch! I didn't even realize this downpipe retains the post-cat set of O2 sensors
