Title: Splitter
Post by: 802SHO on August 12, 2019, 07:56:32 AM
As many of you know the options for exterior styling are limited for our platform.  For the most part all we can do there is tint, black out chrome, debadge, add badges, lower the suspension and add a nice set of wheels.  There is a rear window spoiler to buy and a front chin spoiler.

Watching other vehicles enhance their appearance with exterior styling modifications available to them makes me feel left out.  We really get the short end of the stick with this platform.  It's such a good sleeper the vast majority of the aftermarket world didn't take notice, with the exception of just a few.

I like the way splitters look and enhance the appearance of mustang, cameros, corvettes, caddilacs...etc.  So I looked around and searched out universal ones but nothing was wide enough for our massive front ends.  I decided to make my own.

It's constructed of 1/4" ABS plastic (rigid and durable) and I covered the cut edge with 1/4" Trim Lok.  It's fastened to my Extreme Dimensions front chin spoiler with 10 stainless steel bolts, lock washers, washers and nuts.  For the splitter rods I went with Full Torque Racing (FTR) rods for their quality and to stiffen up this splitter under downforce.  Even with this splitter not replacing the splash guard it certainly works.  I can tell its much more stable at high speeds than ever before.

Some of you have expressed interest in this splitter for your own rides.  I'm interested to see if any others would also be interested.  I also will start making one that will fit the SHO's that do NOT have the Extreme Dimensions front chin spoiler.

Currently I am going to have my splitter dimensions cleaned up and cut with a laser jet.  If I'm going to send you guys a splitter it's going to have to be quality craftsmanship.  I'm also going to look into cleaning the edge with an edge router so that its optional if you want the Trim Lok.  A splitter would come to you with all fasteners, Trim Lok if you want it and the FTR splitter rods.

This does require drilling into your lower grille and removing the front bumper is a must to do that and secure the splitter rod.

Thank you for your interest.  Stay tuned for updates.

Me likely, me wanty.

Let the community know when deposits will be accepted, and more importantly, how production progresses.

Thank you for stepping forward and taking up the reigns on this.

Hell yea Andrew. What a way to step up and help the community. All I can say is I've seen this car in person recently. The splitter looks amazing. Pictures do not do it justice. If I still had my sho I'd already be in line.

However, I found this same one cheaper with wikibuy on ebay.

That is the front chin spoiler that Andrew has. I am picking one up as I write this.

It says it fits 10-12...do you know if it would fit my 18? Cuz I would love to have that custom splitter that 802 is trying to make.

It will fit.  Another member on SHO forum used it on his 13.  13-19 there is no difference.

Easton is correct the front chin spoiler will fit 2010 to current.

I'm really honored you guys love the look!  I dont know how well this will look without the front chin spoiler but we'll find out.

I agree.  Wouldn't that be something if we all had the same lower cladding.....then the mks could get the chin spoiler and the splitter.  Clearly no one has tried to mount the chin spoiler to an MKS.

I bet that chin spoiler will fit a MKS.  The bottom of the MKS and SHO look about the same.

Currently the splitter to fit all extreme dimension front chin spoilers is being transfered to a CAD drawing.  I have consulted a couple different companies to use this drawing to precision cut the splitter out of ABS plastic sheets.

I'll have one prototype sent to me and installed on my car to verify the quality.  So long as it checks out these will be ready for shipment in no time.

I will share more information as I acquire it.

I have a prototype splitter cut from the CAD drawing I had done.  It's perfectly symmetrical, still need some fine tuning of the drawing but it's already better than the original.

I'm going to do a small run of these as interest is very few as to be expexcted.  FTR also has some real carbon fiber splitter rods available which would look killer!

The ABS is smooth on one side and has the texture on the other side.  So there's definitely room to be more creative with this.  Vinyl wrapping the smooth side is one option.  I don't see why it couldn't be painted as well but that will be up to you guys when you get them.  I'm going to keep it simple on my end and not get into offering that.  Mine is mounted with the texture side up and it looks great as is, also scratch resistant.

I'll let you guys know when I'm ready to take orders.  Off the top of my head I know BPD1151 and Sm105k want one.  Anyone else interested please send me a PM.

Thank you

Update.  I test fit the new splitter on my chin spoiler on Sunday.  It just wouldn't align properly.  Spent a good 3 hours messing with it.  I figured out that the width measurement I sent for the CAD drawing was off so causing me fitment issues.  Getting that resolved now and I also had someone try to round the edge...not so good.  It's now in the hands of someone else much better so we'll see.  If done right I myself prefer the look without the edge lok trim guard.

Hoping to get this out to you guys soon.  I'm going to call and order some plastic sheets today.

Quick Update.  I bought a few sheets of ABS to make 6 splitters and I've been sitting on them waiting for the guy I had cut the first one come back from vacation this Monday.  But bc of his workload he can't get to it until this weekend.  I have two alternative CAD drawings that I want a template cut from a different piece of scrap at their work to compare to determine the best one prior to cutting up 3 4x8 sheets of the ABS.  Sorry for the delay as the total time on this added up is still minimal for the wait...but I'm working with 2 different ppls schedules in their free time as I'm getting this done virtually for free.  Trying to keep cost down but I too think this is taking too long.  Bare with me.

Lol well don't sleep on getting the spoiler prepped.  The next step is asking what everyone wants for rods.  I know you want the same ones I have.  Only other option is carbon fiber ones...also from FTR.

Called the private shipping company...they wanted the most so far..$320.  This is like the Twilight Zone.  Somewhere maybe I might find someone who is coherent and conscious when I call.

UPS in person $300
FedEx over the phone $225
FedEx in person $191
Private company over the phone $320
Parcel Monkey online $144...through FedEx.

Lets see what tomorrow brings for more prices.  This is absolutely absurd.  If I was quoted 50 dollars from the getgo I'd be a little salty....what they are asking is straight up robbery.

Maybe if I bubble wrap the splitter it will cost a lot less than if it were in a box?  You look at it in person and it's laughable someone would want $300 to ship it.

In attempting to create a sellable splitter for some of you folks I have remembered that my chin spoiler has been modified.  When I had my chin spoiler in the body shop to get painted and attached to my bumper they kept telling me the chin spoiler was too wide.  They insisted on cutting it to shorten it to sit flush with both ends of my bumper.  I remember asking if that would throw off the dimensions of it...no they said.  Well it appears to have indeed changed the dimensions of my chin spoiler and ive been battling fitment issues with the new splitter made into a CAD drawing to perfection.  Perfect doesn't line up with my modified chin spoiler.  The splitter I made largely traced my chin spoiler so my splitter fits my chin spoiler.  If I were to make a one fits all splitter from my chin spoiler shape they might not fit yours properly.  This is been an issue I've been trying to resolve but I can't without having another chin spoiler to use as a fitment test for the new splitter.

I've been trying to send Easton the new splitter template to confirm the new splitter is a go .....more or less confirming my chin spoiler is out of whack.  And with the shipping rates this was preventing progress and fitment confirmations to happen.  Not today.  I snapped the splitter template in half inside USPS...so I could send it out and move on with progress with this project.  Get this?  I had to buy a roll of tape and with that included...2 day shipping to Easton was $28 dollars!!!!!!!!!  So then why double that size is it another $270 dollars!?!?  I'm going to get this sorted out.  JC!

Great work on this Andrew. What a project. If some s*** stick that lived closer didn't sell his sho, the shipping to Easton wouldn't be a problem.

Speaking of s*** sticks you should let me ship them out from your store!

I totally would but we don't even have a ups or fed ex account. Everything we ship gets done out of the main hub in Boston.

Easton reported the splitter template is a go so I just dropped off some sheets to get them cut.  Next will be to drop them off to get the outside edges rounded.  Shipping is still a question mark.  I'll need to get a solid number to be able to put a price on this for you guys.

When I have them done I will ask you guys if you want the same rods I have in aluminum or carbon fiber.  Carbon fiber will be a price difference of $30.  In leau of the rods I am personally changing to the carbon fiber rods and will disassemble my bumper, chin spoiler and splitter to make a how to video to install.

I spoke to a work buddy that's been parting out old Mustangs for years and he said shipping cost on long parts is always expensive and suggested the possibility of making it a 2 piece. Some type of two piece set up might also buy some flexibility on the install?

Lol well no BS there is a chemical to make ABS bond to other pieces of ABS.  It's just another aspect of will it line back up right...be noticeable?  Would it be better to have it cut on the outside edges rather than one cut straight down the middle?  Will it hold up?  Makes me want to put a slug in the revolver and spin it, pull the trigger ...lmao

If you do spin the barrel, and are good with aim make two holes on either side of the split in the ... splitter.  Then make a brace for it.  Just a thought.

That was my thought,  center brace or center overlap with a made for application epoxy,  but even that adds expenses and may not offset shipping costs.  It's easy to QB things when it's not your project.  Good luck, it's never easy being the first.

There really isn't anything to figure out.  You should road trip starting with me and deliver the splitters.  I will BBQ, you can enjoy the 90 degree fall season, and we can terrorize the streets of Phoenix.  You could officially call it the "GAP Band Tour".  Problem solved.

Ok I have some good news!  I'm dropping the splitters off on Monday to get the edges rounded.  The person to do it is now back from the Philippines.  Also, my friend that let me borrow the sweet camera, works at his GF's family used car dealership.  So in casual conversation I thought to bring up my splitters.  I asked him if they ever send out auto parts like bumpers and stuff, he said yes.  He said they have accounts with UPS and FedEx....I told him the dimensions and he got back to me today, $65 shipped!  FINALLY!!!

I'm excited to see this on your SHO probably just as much as you!  Your rebuild is truly something this platform has never seen before.  I doubt anyone will touch the level to which you're taking it.  To contribute to it, to me, is truly an honor.

As per usual with our platform the interest in this has been very low.  Accordingly this has turned into an extremely limited production.  But that's ok.  It was fun.

I'll be making either a written "How To" and/or private instructional video.

I'm going to be dropping off my Splitter to get paint matched in Tuxedo Black today.  Hopefully I'll get it back before Thanksgiving.  Once completed I'll share how it looks.  Either painting or vinyl wrapping the smooth side would need to be done as the smooth side of the ABS plastic is not scratch resistant and a little unsightly to leave raw.

I was thinking gloss black or flat black but I love the way Tuxedo Black pops in the sun, and I think it will end up looking like part of the chin spoiler rather than an add-on.

Curious what you might do.  You could do either a shade of black or white.  Black grilles, White bumper, gloss Black chin spoiler, paint matched White splitter Black edge guard, CF rods...might look dope...excuse my ghetto lingo.  Might be worth a small roll of white vinyl to decide before paint.

Post by: bpd1151 on November 23, 2019, 11:07:43 AM
I told them to do it in gloss black so that it matches the existing chin spoiler.

But now you have me contemplating.

Things that make you go hmmmm.......

Damnit.
