Title: Brought the SHO to New England dragway
Post by: shoNoff on May 16, 2018, 03:39:46 PM
Decided to get some completely stock runs in on my 2013 PP SHO for data logging and tuning purposes. Lets just say I was very surprised by the results. I was hoping for a 13.9 @ 100 or so. To my surprise the big girl actually moved much better then I ever thought. Only mod is a k&n drop in. All runs were in sport mode with advance trac turned off completely. Enjoy Tim

Stopped at New England Dragway on our way to Cape Cod.  86 degrees 55% humidity!  This was Friday 7/27.  Did 5 runs, best of night 12.3@117 after I took our luggage out!  Shout out to ShoNoff for advise and sending his friend to record me and AJPTurbo for tuning my car so well!  Looking forward to better 60ft and temps!

Great runs!!! 117mph is no joke at all. Like I said I wish I could have made it up but the weather was terrible at my house just 20 mins away. It was raining sidways all night at my house. Glad Martin made it up to video he's a really nice guy and loves cars and drag racing in general.

I bet that Audi had an APR tune...pretty common for them to run low 11's that's a high dollar car with dual high pressure fuel pumps and a bigger displacement engine with 2 more cylinders lol

Come on down it should be a good time. My dad and I have been drag racing for years. Hell I've been driving down that track for almost 30 years now starting all the way back in my Jr. Dragster in 1991.

Always someone better faster. But you cannot beat a SHO when you buy one used and tune it.

You'll need a 2010+ helmet.  Snell?  I brought a MC helmet.  I used to ride so my 06 helmet no good.  I borrowed a friend's.....what year is it?  2010.  Ok cool.  Get down to and they look under the foam inside and find the year of the helmet...I didn't look that hard....it was a 2005!  Lucky they let me get on with it, only this time they said.  You'll need pants and shoes too.  I wore shorts and sandals but had that in my car.  T shirt is fine.  They look at your engine bay, watch you strap your front seat belt on......good to go!

I should be good then, the snowmobile helmet is only 2 years old. The MC ones.....might not be new enough, lol, doesn't help that I mostly run a half helmet when riding....they won't "Snell" those for some weird reason, lol

You can wear a snell motorcycle helmet but NOT a DOT. It has to be snell rated. Mine is a m2015 which is a motorcycle helmet. The oldest snell cert that's allowed is snell2010

Damn!  Guess I won't be wearing my racerback tank top haha and yes that's what he told me, you bring this helmet back and we'll toss it and motioned as if there was a dumpster behind him...I said..ok.  He was letting me use it but yes good luck actually taking a helmet from me and throwing it..police would have a hard time trying to take my helmet let alone a track tech

The techs there think they are the police. I know the NHRA rule book better then most of those morons. They used to try to tell me I needed an SFI fire jacket to run my SRT4 because it didn't come factory with a turbo.

That tech must have a very popular online auction for used helmets.  Haha.  He was very nice for letting me use it, but why all the fluff at the end about tossing the helmet if he sees it again?  Honestly I should bring the same helmet again and if he DOES recognize it out of all the helmets he sees on a daily and weekly basis...this guy is GOOD!  Mad?  Hell, I'd be impressed!  Haha!  Jeez, can't give a person a position that is even mildly authoritative and it goes right to their head.  But people are like this everywhere.  In most cases that I've experienced this phenomenon an actual officer of the law would have been more lenient/reasonable in the situation

So yesterday while putting on my downpipes I learned that either I or the previous owner put a hurting on the front turbo. Has some pretty good shaft play and doesn't spin to freely. The good news is no marks on the housing or the wheel. So I'm basically on borrowed time. So I may or may not run my car. But either way my dad plans to run his so I'll head up in the SHO.

ShoNoff that's crazy you discovered that and also good before a real issue surfaced.  Yeah I would be on the fence as well to run or not.  Either way I'm still planning on going.  I'm assuming because its Ford day it will be pretty busy compared to when I went on Street Night.  About what time do you think you'll be there?  Another thing, if that weather looks ify and its rained the day before, Friday I may not go.  I've done that before on a cloudy morning and they weren't open.  Long drive round trip for nothing in that respect.  Praying for good weather.

Yes inspection time for me is not very easy.  Biggest issue is my muffler deletes.  Fortunately the tech who removed my mufflers now has his own shop and suffice to say I'm g2g as well.  Still have to remove front window tint though.

Weather forecast doesn't look very good in Epping for the 11th.  Fingers crossed.

I want to find out how fast you are as well, we have similar mods.

I have mufflers.... but I have catless (like you) and that is an inspection fail here. Unless you know a guy, lol, I just put the windows all the way down and opened the sun roof....they never checked, luckily, lol

Post by: 802SHO on August 03, 2018, 12:52:48 PM
Lol I did notice that I never put my windows up and he didn't say anything ...its not exactly fun to take off and put back on but I do all my tinting myself so I just went ahead and did it.  Actually yes the catless downpipes aren't really passable.  I think by law in VT you have to have at least one cat and resonator, I do still have the 3rd cat and resonator.  I want to upgrade the exhaust but as of right now I'm unsure of any real performance benefit.  I know I can get maybe a few hp but would less restriction reduce back pressure and lose a couple tq?  Cutouts can increase boost spike
..overall I would want something similar to yours if I did, 3" back, maybe no mufflers still and get rid of 3rd cat and resonator.
Title: Re: Brought the SHO to New England dragway
Post by: ToMang07 on August 03, 2018, 01:01:20 PM
I imagine the benefit would only really come with bigger turbos/injectors. I do get a little drone at certain RPMs, but *if* it bothers me, I just hit the paddle shifter, and viola, no more!
Title: Re: Brought the SHO to New England dragway
Post by: 802SHO on August 03, 2018, 10:46:14 PM
I think you're right about that but also I know that its not necessarily what one part can offer and how it benefits the most, its also all of the parts working together as a whole.

So NED....what do I need to know/do beforehand? Looks like for street all I need is an inspection (just done) and normal papers, plus the helmet (Snell 2010+) anything else?

Anyone know where to get 100% meth?

(Liquid kind, not the Breaking Bad kind...)

Local race shops are your best bet, sometimes tracks will have it, but if you can get VP brand, that would be the best product around.

I didn't have to show any paperwork.  Just show them under the hood, sit in driver seat and strap seat belt on for them to check.  Yes the helmet they do check as well.  Pants and shoes required.  T shirt is fine, no tank tops.
I buy my Meth locally at a speed shop.  Its VP 100% meth, 5 gallons.  Kind of pricey, I know others are able to get it cheaper than here....$79.99 for 5 gallons.  I can inquire if they have any.  I've bought 2 pales so far and each time they didn't have any in stock, had to wait a couple weeks.

Not a lot of race shops around....having a hard time getting into contact with ANY of them. The only 2 within an hour of me, 1 doesn't really do much work (outside of tuning imports/dyno) and the other has yet to even bother returning my calls/messages. I guess I need to branch out further.

Gotcha. Just going off of the event page on FB and NED's website. Sounds like nothing to worry about then.

I guess I'll just start shopping around shops and see if I can find any that have some in stock.

I'm going to bring my 5 gal and fill that baby back up then!  After I fill up before I leave I'll probably have just under 2 gallons left in it.  Tom I could probably top you off for free.  @ $6 a gallon I'm making out like a bandit compared to the speed shop here.

As much as I appreciate it (and am NOT ruling it out, lol) I'd at least cover the cost. I may just pick up a can tho myself and fill it there.

Unless methanol prices have jumped, bpd and StealBlue have been able to get the VP pails for between 3-4$/gallon.  Worth it to keep looking?

Unless methanol prices have jumped, bpd and StealBlue have been able to get the VP pails for between 3-4$/gallon.  Worth it to keep looking?

Well, the $2/gal savings is lost on me if I have to drive a couple hours each way to get it. (I live in the boonies and knowing VT I imagine 802 does as well, lol)  If I can find it local/reasonable, I'll def pick it up! But honestly, I don't plan of "tracking" the car regularly. I want a "current" baseline where I'm at, and then when/if I upgrade I'll do another.

I could always pick up a case of HEET from NAPA! lol

Manu I think we paid $40 even for a pale of M1 @ CCD IIRC! Z   :)

Before I reached out locally I could find it for about 39.99 5 gallon pale online but then shipping is a lot because has to be through hazmat so I was looking at $90 or so delivered to my door.

I reached out locally and it was 79.99 so I took it knowing I was basically paying for 10 gallons and getting 5.

If anyone knows where I could order some and have it shipped to my door for less than 79.99 I'll do that.  I don't go to NH often but since I will be there next week again I plan on taking full advantage of those lower Meth costs.

Well... I may end up flaking after all. My helmet is older than I thought. It's a 2006, so it won't pass tech. I doubt I'll find a 2-3XL locally, but I'm gonna start looking around.

I myself had to get a new helmet this year since my old one was out of date. I went cheap since I only drag race my street car now. I found this on summit $107 shipped and it was at my house in 2 days. Its actually a really nice helmet for the money. I bet if you order today it would be at your house in time. Just a thought.

The helmet I borrowed was Medium and I need at least a Large....but for putting it on and going down the track, I had it on for couple min, was so excited I didn't care it barely fit me and was too tight:)

I doubt NHRA has any input when someone (LME) rents the track.

In the state of NH its not required by law to wear a motorcycle helmet.  Crazy!  Nothing like seeing someone flying on the interstate without a helmet....not for me.

As far as the track I wish it wasn't too closely enforced ..as far as year of helmet anyway.  So...lets say bought helmet brand new...never used, say a spare...its not good now if its pre 2010?  Why?  Safety standard change?  Even then.....I don't quite get that part.

And are all helmets Snell?  Is it DOT is written on the back but inside by the year it states Snell or is it literally two different classifications?

Doesn't matter who rents the track it's still an NHRA sactioned track prepped by the track employees. By that rule John Force can rent a track and race in his underwear. I've rented New England dragway multiple times over my years and my car still had to pass a tech inspection.

2 totally different certifications. Not all DOT helmets are snell. But I believe all snell are DOT. Want to get even crazier look up the rules for 5 point harnesses. I never even used a set and they were out of date by the time I finished my car. Think I had to pay like $95 to get the recertification

Title: Re: Brought the SHO to New England dragway
Post by: Vortech347 on August 07, 2018, 06:15:33 PM
DOT is just a rating for a motorcycle helmet.  It's the lowest possible standards like "mil spec"

Snell SAxxxx is automotive rated.  Designed to smash into roll cages and metal.  Fire resistant interiors.  More wrap around face coverage.
Snell Mxxxx is motorcylce rated.  Designed to smash into concrete/asphalt, ect.... Also typically have more ventilation.. Non fire resistant interior.  Eye openings are bigger to allow max peripheral vision.

NHRA will allow M helmets to a certain stand point.  But really, if you're in a car you "should" be wearing an SA...  On a motor cycle, M...

DOT helmets are like the ones you find at fricken Walmart.

I agree with you. Safety First.

But from what I've seen at my track being NHRA sanctioned means squat to the workers and owners.

I suspect a private day not open to the public makes that worse.

My only experience with rental is NED maybe they just used to be really tight with the rules. They seem to be much more lenient lately though. I remember being told to slow down or go home running 11.2's in a street car with no roll bar. Hell now there must be 10 street cars a night running in the 10's with no roll cage.

I think they had to relax or lose business in the street class...I remember going to the track 16ish years ago and never seeing a power added street car

Now throw boost for 6k at a modern muscle car and they run 10's and people are not willing to hack up and cage their 50k street car

You read my mind!  I'm so close.  I will be thrilled to join the 11 second gang!  The launch seems so touchy.  My instinct is to brake boost as long as possible yet my best 60fts happen when I consciously brake boost for less time, about when the tree falls.  As is if I can get into the 1.7's for 60ft I'm right there.  My best 60ft is a 1.809.

I asked Brad his thoughts prior to going about brake boosting and he told me to try brake boosting for only a few seconds, he said if I brake boost too long I can actually miss my boost target.  He said in his fusion it really messed his launch up if he brake boosted too long.  My third and fourth run I purposely waited for all the staging lights to be lit before I started my brake boosting.  Appeared to have helped.

Andrew I can tell you a few tips from being behind your car on a few of your passes. A few times when you stagged your car you were actually crooked and not entirely in the traction groove. You want to make sure you are a straight as possible and lined up in the traction groove for the best launch results. It's a bit of a pain in the ass to line up straight after going around the water box. We can get into shallow staging later for those few extra .01's lol. I mean I was 1.81-1.84 all night. You should easily be in the 1.75 range. Also I can tell you my car hates it when I brake boost. I usually sit like I said at about 2200 or so and I kind of slide the brake out while I'm giving it gas so it builds a little boost as it's starting to move.

I never thought of or considered the track groove.  I will definitely be mindful of this next time.  I mean, I just need another .18 seconds to tip over into an 11.  I'm really just getting my feet wet with the dragstrip.  This is my first time as of a few weeks ago.

I want to say I do what you're saying, with the brake boosting.  I hold the brake with my left foot and give it gas to where my rpms are above 2, then I let off the brake simultaneously as my right foot burries the accelerator.

I need more practice!  Lol.  And I think I should be in the 1.75-1.78 range all day too.  I know this also falls on me as the driver.  :/

If nothing else, fresh fluid is better, however I'm a believer when it comes to running the best synthetics. I'm planning to drain/top mine in 5k miles when it hits 60k. (Coolant as well, keeping that OEM tho)

Already did 1 PTU, and planning another at 60k. I still need to do the RDU.

That...and grow the nuts to drill/tap/plug the PTU for full flush/fills instead of partial, lol

I pretty much run all Amsoil lubricants except coolant. Even then I do in some vehicles.

The day I hit the track I did the PTU, got 9 oz out of it...it needed a change, overall I was expecting the fluid to be worse, and I changed the RDU, got out 24-26 oz.  Replaced all fluid with Royal Purple.  So is Amsoil better than Royal Purple?  I thought I was putting the best in it.

Tom, when you do the RDU, only back out the fill plug a little bit and do the rest by hand, I backed it out too much and pinned my ratchet.  That was fun.

Hah, thanks for the heads up!

I know a lot of people that swear by it. I like Amsoil more because I know it's a Group 4 oil. I've also done oil analysis to confirm that it holds up. (Other vehicles.) The only thing I've ever seen bad about RP was back in the day they had a bad batch of bike oils and a few guys running high HP sport bikes popped their motors. But it was enough for me to not even try. I pretty much run Amsoil or Mobil 1 if I'm in a pinch, and that's it.

Redline lightweight shockproof in ptu AND rdu.  Give it a go if you can.

Royal Purple is great oil I ran that in my big block racecars for years and in my 500whp turbo neon. I never had a problem running royal purple. I never tried amsoil until this car. So I cant really speak of it being good or bad for the sho. I just put it in the engine this past oil change. In my PTU I used Lucas. I get it cheap at work and I wasn't really planning on changing it the day I did and it was all I could get my hands on. Seems to work well and it holds up to the heat. I can tell you at 48K my PTU fluid looked like crap. No metal but almost sludge. I have yet to touch my RDU, I'll most likely tackle that after the winter.

Time slips from yesterday.  I didnt grab the time slip from when I red lighted and got a 12.2.  My car number is 802 which I hoped was a sign I would hit an 11....not this time.  Maybe in some 45 degree October weather 😀

Best 11.833@116.82!  Video footage not the greatest due to not a very good lens for zoom.  Better than nothing though.  Check it out!
