Title: Are the intake valves nitride coated (controlling valve coking)
Post by: 6500rpm on August 15, 2018, 10:06:17 PM
I see a lot of valve coking on DI engines at my job, I also mess with firearms and there's a trend toward nitride coated barrels due to it's properties. I was curious if the OEM intake valves on our GTDI engines are nitride coated by chance if anybody knows.
Just a conversation point, not like I'm going to pull the heads off my vehicle just to install treated valves if Ford hasn't provided some type of treatment, but it makes me wonder. Also, what's the most important oil spec to look at-flash point?

No idea on the valves.  FoMoCoSHO can give input on the most important oil properties, hes really dug into that stuff.

They might be sodium filled but I doubt they are coated. I retired from a specialty alloy mill that made all types of valve steel. They didnt need coating per metallurgists. Lol

Would there be a benefit if they were? I mean cuz when I had my intake off, the port had just as much buildup as the valve...

Says the Stem is Nitrided.

I know the valves (old and new) were both coated when I replaced on in my 02 F350. I imagine they would be in these cars.

Mustang 2.3 EB
"The cylinder head now has sodium-filled valves. The sodium is contained in the hollow valve stem and transfers heat from the head of the valve to the stem for improved valve cooling."

Oh jeeze, Ford didn't learn from GM effing up the Z06 engines with those valves.  Hopefully they are more robust.

Nary a problem yet.  Possibly they let GM do the beta testing LOL.
