Title: Newbie tune question
Post by: sub_ETCS_ret on June 20, 2018, 05:13:46 PM
I recently received an unleashed tune. Since receiving the tune I have noticed a bit of an exhaust smell. Is it because the car is running rich? I didn't notice it before the tune but that's not to say it didn't exist.

This is for your 15-SHO Correct! Tune only! Nothing else changed recently!
I highly doubt its related to your newly installed tune IMO! Recalls up to date!
Due update your signature with your current vehicle & any mods you may have so we can assist you better,Thanks.  Z

Here is a complete list of TSB'S pertaining to the 13+SHO!

It is for the 15 SHO. 3 bar map and OEM plugs gapped to 0.030 and recently had the fuel pump relay recall completed.

If it's not the tune then I'm looking for an exhaust leak.

How many miles on your SHO! I would check for an exhaust leak preferably on a cold morning startup for any H20 on the floor. Z

33k. It seems to happen when I let off the gas or when I get on it a bit and let off the gas.

Definitely inspect the exhaust system (OEM?) closely.  Flex pipe may be cracked, bolts may be loose, etc.  It may also be indicative of incomplete combustion, might be worth installing a new set of plugs if the OEM plugs came with the car.  No codes in the PCM, right?

I replaced the plugs with the OEM 534 gapped per Torrie's recommendation. OEM exhaust and no error codes.

I'm not finding anything. The only thing I've found that I have a question about is the valve on the charge pipe to the rear turbo. Does it always make an air sound? Don't want to say hissing but could be.

Maybe I'm being over sensitive. I'll just keep an eye on it.

Does a tune take time to settle in?

It takes roughly 50 miles for the tune to settle in similar to OBD Readiness monitors IIRC!   Z

I got at leat 50. I know there is an exhaust smell. Just wish I could tell where it's coming from. I've tried revving it in the garage and I am only getting the smell from the tailpipe. I've had a car with an exhaust leak from the manifold and that is a constant smell. This comes and goes which is why I was wondering if it was tune related.

I can't imagine that exhaust from the tailpipe is occasionally being blow back into the car.

I guess I can switch the tune back and see what happens or just live with it.

Def, compare with stock tune and similar conditions.  Are you datalogging?  You can send logs to Torrie for analysis, see if he sees anything going on.

I got the datalog config file from Torrie the other day. I'm going to try to get some data this weekend. Never done it before so I been doing a bit of research. I guess I need to WOT to redline? We have a couple of pieces of highway where I think I can do it.

It varies by Tuner AFAIK!
I think its WOT pull from 1st through 3rd and also a 3rd gear sweep in manual mode from 2000-5900rpm.

I would confirm with your Tuner prior!  Z

Definitely need to datalog. Guys on the facebook groups have been complaining that Torries tunes have been crazy rich while also getting crazy knock resulting in only 7° of spark advance.

I can only imagine the blind speculation that might go on in FB. Lots of variables though. I've seen fuel so bad that 7 degrees of spark is all you can get. Especially at high loads. Or high elevation and moderate load.

Spark follows load. Unleashed tunes generally always have the throttle wide open so I've seen load spikes of 2.0 which is likely over 20 psi boost. That alone could call for only 7 degrees of spark. Sometimes that's why big boost doesn't work well. And at those load spikes fuel pressure could fall which also isn't ideal for fighting preignition. Add all that up and yep, 7 degrees of spark.

I ended up going with an AJPTurbo tune. Thing is awesome. Wife was in the car on the highway when I nailed it and the car took off like a bat out of hell. She looked at at the speedometer and said no way are we going that fast. His tune will throw you back in your seat.

I got an AJPTurbo tune which totally rocks! I ended up working with Torrie to get the his tune straightened out but it was never as good as the AJPTurbo tune. Just the 0-60 between the 2 tunes was huge. With AJPTurbo I had a 4.961 and with Unleashed the best I could get was 5.162.

If you have E85 available get yourself an AJP E30 tune and she will really scream.
