Title: PTU Starting to Fail
Post by: polskifacet on June 06, 2019, 11:41:00 AM
Hey Guys,
Pics of the PTU. Look like crappy manufacturing to me, shaft wasn't hardened well. Gears look really good after 100k miles 50k of those tuned. Shows changing the oil is really worth it. Minimal sludge , pics taken after cleaning with mineral spirits.

my guess based on missing hunks of shaft metal ... it was leaking around the shaft.

Yeah maybe wobbly shaft.  First instance I have seen visually OR reported.  Usually it is gears or bearings.

the shaft with the damage is the one the middle gear spins on. No leaking but sounded like a supercharger when I floored it. It would live quite a bit longer if I kept changing the oil but who knows how long and where it would break hence why I changed it.

Did it happen to sound like this?

No it was only when I floored it and was much more high pitched.

Remove downpipes and unbolt steering rack (let it hang) , unbolt ptu.
