I am going to be putting together a list of exhaust note related videos here. I have seen many people ask about exhaust options and how they sound, so I think this will be a great resource for everyone.

No all My MOD are still on the car but the DynoMax out for the Stock mufflers.
Well my exhaust is done. Wound up with a 2.25 xpipe, 2.25 vibrarant resonators, and two magnaflow mufflers with cherry bomb tips. Im finally happy with the sound. The resonators are a must have in this setup. Ill get a video up this weekend.
Can we sticky this?
Very much looking forward to hearing your arrangement.
What was your OTD expense?
With Cherry Bombs, I'm assuming you're referring to the good ol glass packs?

cherry bomb tips on Magnaflow mufflers :)
No just the exhaust tips themselves. They have zero impact on sound.
$425 in hardware, $200 in labor.

Haha! I was slightly bamboozled by the idea of a set of glass packs downstream a set of mags.
And glass packs on a SHO. They sound good on my pickup though! Lol

Ha! Excellent story.
There was a set of 24" glass packs on my pickup for...Geeze, 35-40 years. Needless to say, they didn't sound too good anymore.
A couple years ago I threw a set of 18" 2.25" Cherry Bombs on her.

where is your old exhaust ? I don't want mine loud.
Just sitting in the garage... have Magnaflow 11386, 2.5" muffled x, and Dynomax Axleback just sitting here.
Pulled off Magnaflow about a month ago for a bare x... def sounded better before. Quieter but great tone and none of that rasp, even with catless dp's.
Maybe a dumb question...but semi-related.
In watching a these videos, I'm noticing I hear a lot of turbos spooling up. Sure, this is more pronounced on the guys with upgraded ATPs, but what is the most common approach to get you there? I love that sound!!
@SHODYOU: You have a PM.
The less restrictions you have the louder your turbos get. Take out cats, turbos get louder. Take out the factory resonator and put some straightflow mufflers in they get super loud. Mine were louder without the vibrant s, but not much.

Thanks!
Intake or hot pipes have much of an effect on it? Or mostly just exhaust stuff?
Just exhaust stuff... muffler swap made em audible. 3rd cat/res delete, even with a muffled x and they were pretty noticeable.
Catless dp's and under any load its whistles... great to hear em reflecting off cars/buildings/trees while you have windows down.
Does anyone have or can make a video of how a Corsa exhaust sounds from inside their SHO while cruising at highway speeds? With or without DP's.

Great job thanks for this topic!
I was about to say... its basically useless to try to video.
Even with my catless dp's at hwy speed the tires and wind are louder. It falls a distant 3rd in the noise category unless im giving it throttle.
Alright...first off: Thank you all for this excellent resource!
Second: (edited to make more sense)
Has anyone heard flowmasters on a transverse?
What I'm really trying to isolate from all these videos is the rasp. So what is it exactly I want to stay away from?
I'm thinking 2.5" or 3" non-catted DPs, 3" back to magnaflow Tru-X 3" crossover, 3" back to MBRP, Corsa, or Flowmaster 10s, out to 4 or 5" tips...good idea / bad idea? Hoping for something original here, that fits my taste...
Also, anyone heard any updates to the 3" downpipes @adrianMAK had in development? I haven't seen anything posted since May...
:chop:
Whelp...that must have done it...not sure what I asked that put it over the edge; but sorry I suck and killed this thread. :axe:
I would not run anything chambered (flowmaster or knockoff) on a turbo vehicle.
The pulses it creates sends a wave back into the turbo and kills power.
The way they work is by pulsing the exhaust in the chambers to create a vacuum that supposedly sucks out more exhaust, but turbos hate it.
Post turbo exhaust should be about removing any and all restrictions post compressor.
Stick with a straight thru type... if you want a deeper flowmaster type sound (but no hollowness) go with a Mac FloPath or Spintech.
Neither are a true straight thru but neither design slows down exhaust flow.

... go with a Mac FloPath or Spintech.
Stay far from spintech unless you have a resonator or something else to quiet it down. Those will provide full race / neighbor annoyance mode if installed.
The largest spintech mufflers (volume) are still much louder than the smallest 'street' style set ups.
(I have owned Prostock, sportsman and a larger version on my V8s, and they are all loud, especially if paired with 3" exhaust flow tubes)
I love the spintech sound on a V8, but I'm still trying to figure out what I would 'like' my v6 to sound like.
Anyone have an idea of what just a cut out sounds like? (installed upstream of the cat/resonator)
One more thing: Exhaust system weights.
I didn't see it mentioned anywhere else in this thread, so I'll post my findings. The stock system containing all hangers, mufflers, cat/resonator and flanges weighs 76.2lbs.
Does anyone have data on other aftermarket system components?
I'm not interested in loud, but I am interested in less weight and more flow.(I know this is a tough request!)
The best of my knowledge the Corsa cat back weighs 5lbs less than stock, contributed to the elimination of the resonator and cat and the straight thru.

sounds good just revving. Looks like I'll be saving up a little more money for some dynomax mufflers
I finally purged all the crappy grocery store fuel my wife was running and loaded a 90 octane Unleashed tune. That tune kills most of the drone. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's the increased airflow. I'm wondering if a cold-air intake will kill the drone too. Any one know?

I have PPE catted down pipes and the 3rd cat deleted with two pieces of straight pipe, the rest of the exhaust it stock (resonator and mufflers). If you can, could you possibly get a video/sound clip of that? In the spring i'm looking at doing the same thing, but putting in an X-Pipe instead of the 2 straight pipes. I like the whole "Sleeper Sound" for now.
I will try to get one tonight, I though about the x-pipe but it is just for cylinder balance at low RPM and since we are turbo etc. I saw no need for the upper RPM restriction.

You're probably right, i was also reading up on how there probably isn't enough gain to really justify it in the long run. Since it'll be how much cheaper just to cut out the 3rd cat like you're doing.
No rush on the video by any means. Although, i'm really excited to see it!

I have the full pwr up-grade (down-pipe,2.5 exhaust, 2.5 x-pipe, METH KIT, with exchangeable DynoMax/Stock Muffler) Just changing DynoMax 2" from 2" Stock gain no pwr but just sounds good. A 2.5" pipe can be added to them and the stock mufflers. Helping me make 405hpw but QUIT AS STOCK !!! For road trips with the wife!!!!!!

How do I make my 2013 SHO sound like this car?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCPYmVZwXc4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCPYmVZwXc4)
I'd rather shoehorn in a Mustang engine & exhaust than try to make the SHO sound like that. Or you could try changing mufflers. Or you could combine downpipe upgrade with a nice X-Pipe. Have you looked on YT for the various mods people have done? Plenty of samples from shoman, bpd, etc.
You could also try having MRT build a custom exhaust for you, they work with a lot of Focus ST's, might be up for a SHO project.

I like it! Can I ask if you have any drone or resonance inside the cabin at certain RPMs? How much do you have in to it from a $ perspective if you don't mind sharing?

Cost me $610 total. Some drone but usually only under load. I am only worried about drone between 60 - 80 mph which is not enough to be annoying. Take into consideration im not PP so my rpm is lower at those speeds than a PP. Only thing I am wondering is to put a 28 inch X magnaflow muffler in place of the resonator. It would probably be quieter than the current stock resonator or about the same if i swap downpipes. Just a thought.

polskifacet, Could you please post a video of it in car? I'm highly considering the Magnaflow catback system for out Flex, and would like to cut out the 3rd cat at the same time. However since it is the wifes daily driver it can't be to obnoxious, or any level of obnoxious actually. From outsaide the car, that sounds great and I can't wait to swap out the stock for the Magnaflow.

Well if you want 0 drone, don't change the mufflers. Its hard to gauge sound from inside the car from a video, it sounds meh under load and does drone quite a bit under load since it is essentially a straight pipe. If you feather the throttle it is pretty quiet. I would really try and meet up with someone that has an exhaust, otherwise I can only give you my opinion. I would say the noise level is very acceptable inside the car unless you go uphill. Highway speeds its also not bad, 60 is basically silent. 70 -85 ish some drone starts. After changing the stock resonator to a magnaflow resonated X, the sound/drone was acceptable to me. I also think I have longer mufflers in the rear than what magnaflow has in their catback but I am not sure.

While not a "sound" post, here is an example of a resonator used to help reduce drone. If you are otherwise happy with your exhaust mods, this would be a good addition:

Drone is definitely there at highway speeds, but not too bad IMO, then again I am used to a mustang with drone-masters so there's that, and my F150 had glasspacks on it. I'm kinda desensatized to drone honestly.
The drone seems to be there around 55-60 and ~68-75 or so. I know its there from turning the radio and A/C off to see if there was some, but for the most part with the radio on, even pretty low, and especially with climate on, its almost impossible for me to tell.
I just bought a go-pro (shoutout to Mike A.K.A MiWiAu ) so I'll get some driving clips once that gets here, and share em for you guys.

I am ordering my tips today , 4.5inch . What size is the stock pipe going into the muffler is it 2.25? I plan on doing the muffler delete at home with my brothers welding skills. Also does anyone know if a muffler delete can be done with just straight piping or do i need it to be bent a little?

I definitely had to deal with some bending to get the tip centered. I came into it thinking just a couple straight pipes, clamps, and pipe mating joints were all I needed. Then I cut my mufflers off and realized the angles were all over the place. Our mufflers aren't center-in, so it takes some work. We ended up doing it the right way and welded the pipes on, in two sections instead of just one, and then took a torch and heated up the main bend and pulled the whole straight pipe into place the extra inch that was needed to center my tips. Hangers will end up being another challenge you'll face. Be prepared for the worst lol. I luckily was working with an experienced old-school mechanic (my buddy's Dad), so he figured things out relatively easily after studying the whole thing for a bit and making changes on the fly. I can honestly say I wouldn't have got the job done without a welder, a torch, and his knowledge.
grrr, i really hate to pay an exhaust shop . Maybe once i get the car up in the air my brother will have some words of wisdom
Is the exhaust the same on the flex as the sho/mks ?

Axle-back, yes, for sure. Not positive about cat-to-axle section fitments, but I believe even those are the same. Muffler delete only concerns axle-back anyhow, so the answer for you is yes.

Custome tig welded mandrel bent exhaust. Borla XR1, AR25 Aero Resonators, Single 3.5" Stainless all the way after the Y pipe. Exhaust is stupid deep in the lower RPMs. Listen with headphones.
Btw, anyone know the spacing on our 3 bolt flange from the downpipe? Getting a custom 3" made as well.

Looks good except for that pipe shooting out of the rear...still has that terrible ecoboost sound
Definitely has that ecoboost sound still. But hard to capture the deepness of the exhaust from 1.5-3k. Up top is fairly quiet, probably due to the primary cats.
Yea I need to trim about 2 inches from the tip. Didnt notice it once it came off lift, had to leave right after. Going to the same fabricator for the DPs.
Then.. a tune.

It sounds good there NITSOOB !! But i'm liking that "Ruby Red" color!. Z :thumb:
BTW Fixed the above Vid for ya. :)
anyone have a single mid pipe with everything else stock ? or maybe with down pipes ?
seems like an easy way to pick up some power from the exhaust system with out too much trouble and loud - bad sound....
I cannot make up my mind whether i want to do a muffler delete with new tips or just leave it completely stock until I go Corsa.
I am for sure going to add catted PPE downpipes at some point in the future before I spend the coin on a true catback.
I have a feeling PPE catted downpipes and a muffler delete might not sound that great.
Definitely better off using a tuned resonator when going muffler-less. The 3.5 is not a cool-sounding engine. PPE + Corsa should work fine though.

My single biggest gripe about this platform...I have yet to hear a "good" (obviously it's subjective) exhaust. Stock, my Flex has a nice throaty growl from the driver's seat. My dad's stock '16 F-150 has that awful tinny/rattly V6 noise.
Now I think you are absolutely right about the resonator. After years and years of exhausts and research, I think the single biggest mistake people make is with resonators. As much as most people will deny it, Ford engineers are really good at their job, and that resonator is there for a reason. And that reason is to even out the exhaust note and prevent drone, probably the two biggest complaints when people start messing with the exhaust.
Reminds me of another forum I was on; some kid decided he wanted a little more noise out of his ex-cop '16ish DoD Caprice. He said all was fine, until the car went into econ-mode (4 cylinder) and the drone was unbearable. He said he left everything stock (INCLUDING THE MUFFLERS) but ditched the huge resonator. Well, that resonator was big for a reason...it not only was working to combat the resonant frequency of the 8 cylinder mode, but ALSO the 4 cylinder mode, keep NVH down during all modes of driving.
I don't understand why turbos on these cars change the exhaust tone/type SO much. The Duratec, which the EcoBoost's are loosely based on, had really pretty nice exhaust notes if done right. My SVT Contour sounded REALLY good...I think it's going to take someone with a lot more knowledge about flow dynamics and resonance than me, to solve the EcoBoost exhaust high performance exhaust epidemic.
they sound pretty darn good with a Corsa exhaust IMO. I just have a hard time paying 1500 bucks for some pipe and mufflers. but someday after DPs ill probably do it.

Just muffler deletes, IMO, sound just about as "good" as the Corsa. And it's free.99

If you go this route, definitely ONLY muffler delete ...
Just from a purely exterior sound.
Was just reading another thread in this forum and some people don't have drone issues (doubt the drone isn't there) and some people that call it head rattling. Back to my original post, resonator is the way to go. Apparently the stock mufflers also aid in some of the resonance cancellation, and removing them is bad news for your sanity. Hence my original thoughts of someone building a resonator on an open exhaust (Helmholtz resonator)....and just looking up Helmholtz resonator SHO...and found this gem...honestly, the best sounding 3.5EB exhaust I've ever heard.

If I'm honest these videos seem to minimize the drone...it's probably a little worse then the video makes it out to be although I haven't listened with headphones. I hit the turn signal so you would have a reference noise for comparison...
