Title: PTP Turbo Blankets
Post by: 802SHO on January 31, 2020, 05:24:41 AM
Turbo Blankets aid in keeping the turbo hotter, hotter air increases spooling and efficiency of the turbos.  Turbo Blankets also reduce under hood temps by containing the heat from the turbos to itself.  This increases responsiveness and enhances the power band.  In a test 6.7 Turbo Diesel engine, simply adding this PTP Turbo Blanket increased torque in the power band by 100ft lbs.  It didn't add peak torque but it released nearly 10% torque in areas where it wasn't previously available in the power band....impressive.

Aaron240 over at SHOFORUM recently sent PTP our turbo info and they are willing to create Turbo Blankets for our platform if there is enough interest.  Anyone else interested in this?

Putting the turbo blankets on though...may be the real test lol.  Tight like a tiger

If so, then only Exxon fuel can be used.  And you can only eat Kellogg Frosted Flakes.  And wear striped underwear.  And ...

These have been successfully used on the 2.7EB Edge Sport

Andrew as we spoke about posting this to the forums I guess I do have an account on this forum after all. Hopefully they make these for the platform! Ill check in with them periodically to show there is indeed interest. Curious as well how install will go, im sure there prob isn't allot of room to work with.

Would love to see how much if affects our platform and cost. I am interested but don't know if I would bite until knowing that info.

Well they already make these things, what's a slight different in measurements?  They could make a dozen sets and they would sell.  If its not all that effective, than no harm no foul on their end.  So we should see something come out of this and then we'll know for sure.

I believe they reduce longevity of the turbos, our GT15s are so sensitive already..

All,

I spoke with Manny from PTP turbo blankets regarding the turboblankets being made for our platform. He said the design team is working on it and they will be making them if there is enough interest. He said we would do a group buy at first so the more people the more affordable the blankets will be. The 3.5 ecoboost ford raptor turbo blankets are $250 for the set as a reference for what to expect price wise. He also said if anyone has a spare set of turbos they could use to mock up the blankets with that would drastically reduce the price as well. I am looking for a list of those that would be interested in a set of turboblankets for their 3.5 transverse ecoboost, SHO, MKS, Flex Explorer sport etc. The amount of interest we show determines how soon they make them and the price they will be. Price would range from $275-$400 max based upon the amount of people willing to buy.

If you want to be on the list please email me at aaronschwartz9@gmail.com or txt 7405625792 so i can update PTP with the amount of those interested.

There are several substantial benefits of using a turbo blanket.

Here are just a few:
1. A turbo blanket protects components within your engine bay. The turbo blanket isolates the heat produced by your turbocharger, and prevents that heat from damaging, or even igniting, components surrounding the turbocharger within your engine compartment, such as plastic and rubber hoses and electrical wiring, as well as painted surfaces, such as the engine bay and the surface of the hood. Also, it prevents areas of localized high temperature from damaging the engine itself. For example, a common cause of head gasket failure in turbocharged vehicles is localized heating of a portion of the engine. The heat differential between the portion of the engine near the turbocharger and the rest of the engine can cause warping of the head, and thus, head gasket failure. This has been a known cause of head gasket failure in both OEM and aftermarket turbocharged vehicles.

2. A turbo blanket improves the performance of your turbocharger by keeping "the hot side hot". In keeping the exhaust gases within the turbocharger hot, turbocharger efficiency is improved. As you may know, the hotter a gas is, the more expansive it is. Within a contained system of a specified size, the more expansive a gas is, the greater the pressure derived and thus, the greater the flow of gas to escape the containment. With this increased pressure and flow rate for a given engine RPM, the acceleration of the turbocharger's impeller is increased as compared to the same turbocharger with the engine at the same RPM but with cooler exhaust gases. This equates to faster spool up of the turbocharger, as well as greater attainable levels of boost. What a driver will experience with a turbo blanket is greater turbocharger responsiveness. The faster spool up of the turbocharger means less turbo lag and a more linear power curve.

3. A turbo blanket improves the performance of your turbocharger by keeping "the cool side cool." As you may know, it is very important to keep engine intake air cool. This is why intercoolers are often utilized with turbochargers. Similar to above, the cooler a gas is (such as intake air), the more dense it is. The more dense the intake air, the more oxygen it contains per unit volume. The more oxygen reaches the engine, the more power can be obtained. In keeping the heat of the exhaust gases contained within the hot side of the turbocharger and away from the cool side of the turbocharger and the intake path, more oxygen per unit volume reaches the engine, and thus, more power.

Below is the email I sent to PTP.

Hello PTP,

I am reaching out regarding turbo blankets for the 2015 Ford Taurus SHO I have. This application would be on the transverse mounted twin turbo 3.5 ecoboost engine. The two (2) turbos are listed as Garrett Turbos and the part number that's referenced is Garret GT1549L. I found these stock photos showing the size and overall profile of the turbos, they are fairly small. Myself and many others on the online forums are interested in having this product available for our platform.
The platform includes:
•   2010-2019 Ford Taurus SHO
•   Ford Flex
•   Lincoln MKS and MKT
•   Ford Explorer Sport
All models I have listed have the transverse ecoboost 3.5 v6 and utilize these Garret turbos so they will fit a broad range of vehicles.
NOTE: The Garret turbo on the 3.5 ecoboost is not the same as the ford f150 3.5 ecoboost as those utilize Borg Warner turbos.
Please feel free to reach out to this email address with progress and updates on the turbo blanket design for this platform.

Thanks
