I have a 2012 EB Flex with 70,000 miles, No warning, no noise, no oil leaking just getting on the freeway and boom....gone. I did change the PTU fluid at 45,000 miles (it was super black) and i was about to change it again right before it blew. When i received the new PTU from the dealer i took the fill plug out to make sure it was full, but i looked at the fluid and it looked to be clear and didn't smell like gear oil, is everyone absolutely positive that the PTU takes 75W/140W Synthetic ?

Yes there has been discussed that it's crazy clear and almost like water fluidity.

Yes, exactly! very thin and watery like a mineral oil. After i saw this i was thinking that i caused the PTU to fail by putting the wrong fluid in.

This is exactly why i suck the fluid out of these things and put in new oil every 2 or 3 oil changes.  They're ticking time bombs.

And yes, 75w140 is definitely correct.  It says it right in the owner's manual.  What were you quoted for a new unit and installation?

And i've used nothing but royal purple 75w140 since i got it at 40k miles.  Still going strong at almost 140k.

What brand oil did you use @ your 45k change?

How difficult was the PTU swap out? I may be changing mine in a 2013 SHO due to a leak. Any tips?

Keep in mind I did this in a Flex, I know the drivetrain is the same but I'm not sure about the undercarriage. It wasn't that bad at all. First I removed the exhaust and disconnected the driveshaft. Then I removed the pass side front tire and axle but before I could pull the axle out I had to separate the ball joint and tie rod. Remove the lower mount on the bottom of the PTU. Loosen the 4 back frame bolts and slowly let the frame come down and eventually you will get enough room to pull the PTU out after removing the PTU bolts of course. Keep in mind I did this on a lift so that why I said it wasn't that bad of a job.
