Title: Catch can,air/oil seperator, vent to atmosphere?
Post by: Gjkrisa on February 05, 2019, 04:47:13 AM
High I'm starting to see some pics/videos of people using vent to atmosphere pcv setup I'm curious how well the vent to atmosphere works if it throws a check engine light.
Also of the pros and cons of each set up
Pro for vent to atmosphere I see cost and easy install tidy engine bay.

I have the CFM Performance Billet  Valve  Cover Breathet installed on the Front clean side without NO issues or codes to mention and also great for aesthetics.  Z  :)

Since this is emissions related MOD I would simply remove it a couple of days PRIOR to having your vehicle inspected IMO!

Thank you! Yes we don't have IM checks anymore :)
We have determined that all our bad air is from poor wood burning but started to see alot of s*** in the air for a few years now about the same time we got rid of it.

I had my 13 cleanside VTA for ~45k miles and never threw a code. The VTA did burp oil once in a while based on my breather routimg, so some engine bay degreasing was required a couple times a year.

WI emissions are OBD2 only (no visual), and other than putting on the stock tune, I didn't have to do anything else.

I did see something that 2015+ may have issues that this certain catch can will not have that issue.

Here is my set up, was a noticeable difference l, the engine feels and sounds much healthier now after drawing fresh air through the motor and not being a sealed system. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190417/6ddbdda225e979234a73e940546e15fc.jpg)

Is the CFM breather used in conjunction with the oem line to the intake?  If not where does the pcv system get fresh air?

I'm sold, that looks like a great solution!
Edit: I suppose you could add a check valve to the oem line so that it would never allow flow back to the intake tube as well.

The Breather Kit is a 2 piece unit! Install the Bottom Aluminium Half First by turning it clockwise Then simply Install the TOP piece by pushing it inside the bottom half.

I then opted to secure the rubber Half with a thin 1.0 - 1.6 inch Hose clamp for good measures!
I think you can see the Hose clamp pictured below for reference. Z

It's not machined properly, it's thicker then the plastic OEM. The threads are thicker, maybe it will fit the wife's 2.3.

That's where the hose clamp comes to play as mentioned ^^ Glad they issued another piece. Enjoy. Z  :)

Ordering this setup for my wife's 2018 eco-boost Mustang... Thanks again. The SHO seems to run differently then before. There's always something to wipe up when I get a tank of fuel. Thankfully it's not on the intake valves. Does it matter what I run, regular or hit-test for a stock tune?

I would not worry unless there is unusual loud engine knocks especially in stock tune since the PI run regular fuel without a hitch. I would at least use 91 octane fuel to be on the safe side IMO!
If you're seeking better Mpg with a hint of performance add some Shell 93 octane fuel every other fill up for comparison!

I always like to use a top tier premium gasoline such as Shell or Chevron preferably @ a high turnover busy station. Z

Directly from owners manual

Your vehicle is designed to operate on regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87.
Some fuel stations, particularly those in high altitude areas, offer fuels posted as regular unleaded gasoline with an octane rating below 87. The use of these fuels could result in engine damage that will not be covered by the vehicle warranty.
For best overall vehicle and engine performance, premium fuel with an octane rating of 91 or higher is recommended. The performance gained by using premium fuel is most noticeable in hot weather as well as other conditions, for example when towing a trailer.
Do not be concerned if the engine sometimes knocks lightly. However, if the engine knocks heavily while using fuel with the recommended octane rating, contact an authorized dealer to prevent any engine damage.
We recommend Top Tier detergent gasolines, where available to help minimize engine deposits and maintain optimal vehicle and engine performance. For additional information, refer to www.toptiergas.com (http://www.toptiergas.com).
Note:  Use of any fuel for which the vehicle was not designed can impair the emission control system, cause loss of vehicle performance, and cause damage to the engine which may not be covered by the vehicle Warranty.

So you run this breather on the left side and a catch can (like JLP) on the right side?

NO OCC on my setup. This is my current Config which entails bit of cleaning every oil change. Z

What happens to rest of the hoses and such that are connected now, is there installation diagram?

Thank you

NO its an alternative for the front Clean side Sep! Its the rear catch can that collects the majority of the oils contaminants when compared to the Front CSS which collects roughly 20% of all the generated excessive blowby on the GTDI! Z
