Title: MKZ 2.7 and 3.0 in FWD
Post by: MKS Tom on May 17, 2020, 07:10:18 PM
I find it pretty hilarious that Lincoln offered these in FWD models.  I would imagine the torque steer is crazy.  However, it appeals to me for a very specific reason.  Getting the performance and features you get with a vehicle like this while bypassing the truly awful PTU Ford has designed with their vehicles.  If these were RWD instead there would be no question I would own one of them but FWD with this kind of power has to eat up tires quickly.  Does anyone have one of these?  I would be more interested in the 3.0 TT version.  Thanks.

I drove both engines a few months ago. Felt strong but both were on AWD platforms.

I am sure both do fine on AWD.  The 3.0 especially.  I just have been looking at options that get around a Ford PTU.

I have a Continental with the 3.0 and AWD.    I can't imagine having a 3.0 MKZ without AWD although it is detuned from 400 HP to 350 in the FWD versions.

While the PTU still doesn't hold much lube, it is water cooled in the 2017+ Continental and presumably also in the MKZ.    I have no particular worries about the PTU in my Lincoln.   The torque vectoring system works very well for cornering and it hooks up very well from a dig.

Definitely paltry at 15.2 oz for the 2017 Continental.

I am not sure I would actually take the plunge to get a FWD vehicle with that much power due to torque steer but I truly do loathe the PTU Ford makes.  lol

Why do you hate it so much?   I put around 75,000 miles on my MKS and it must have had at least 100 trips down the quarter mile.   PTU never gave me any trouble at all.   I simply changed the lube in it annually.

I wonder that too.  They are plenty strong and I not seen a PTU break due to being over powered.  They fail because of heat.  The heat kills the fluid, once thermal break down occurs, bearings do not get lube and they fail.  Once that happens....done.

Mine failed a few months after I bought it and even after I had it serviced.  Based on my personal experience and seeing so many others post about their PTU failures has given me a very unfavorable opinion on them.  My MKS will be fine with a new PTU and that I'll service it still but it doesn't mean it was not poorly engineered.  Unless you are buying the car new you never know how it was taken car of.  I won't buy a new car on principal due to loss of value right away so it is always a factor to some extent.

I replaced my 2011 SHO with a 2017 MKZ 3.0t awd with drivers package.  Very happy with the purchase.  They actually detune the FWD models to 350HP instead of 400HP presumably for the lack of traction and torque steer.

The continental is offered in the 2.7 but the MKZ gets only a 3.0t, 2.0t, and the hybrid .
