Title: NEED HELP: Changing PTU oil on Performance Package PTU
Post by: SuperPete on March 28, 2020, 01:01:46 PM
I have a friend who has 2014 Ford Explorer Sport, PTU with cooler/radiator
He has 30K miles on it and decided to do the oil change in the PTU.
Factory drain plug was completely stripped out and he could not get it out, I recommended him to drill and tap the bottom so he did.
Now, after he drilled he spilled some oil out on the ground and did not captured all of it, so we don't know how much he needs to put back and we don't see the fill/oil level plug on this PTU.
How can you fill to factory level completely drained PTU, I know it takes more oil due to the radiator and hoses so I am afraid to put standard 18OZ there, what if some radiator oil came out and we are undfilled?

Thank You

All PTUs to my knowledge should have a fill port, it's the drain port that only some have, are you sure he couldn't get the fill port open and simply doesn't have the drain port? I believe you can fill through the vent port, not sure on the amount though

He can fill via vent hole that is not an issue, how much to fill is.
No fill plug... Only drain

Take an empty 20z coke bottle, fill it with the PTU oil you are going to use.  Fill the PTU.  That's what I do.

Thank you, but the issue is that he drilled his own drain plug hole on the belly of the PTU, so drain from factory drain hole will be allot less than his drain, due to the amount left in the put due to the factory drain hole location.
I am afraid he undersells that put and pump won't have another oil to suck in or overfill.
There has to be some kind of factory fill level procedure, right?
Maybe taking hose from the put oil pump and fill until oil comes out of that?

According to the service manual: www.nicksmustangranch.com/Service_Manuals/2014/2014_Taurus/Resources/Service_Manual/sef87b04.htm (http://www.nicksmustangranch.com/Service_Manuals/2014/2014_Taurus/Resources/Service_Manual/sef87b04.htm)
They all have the fill plug and the procedure is to fill up to the bottom of the fill plug

Make absolutely sure the car is level when refilling. If not you can overfill and it spit from the breather. Ask me how I know.
