Title: Coops Blown 416 TBSS
Post by: CooperS7777 on May 14, 2014, 06:09:46 AM
I figured Id share one of my other builds here.  This project just sort of materialized out of no where - I had a daily driver Duramax, and I was offered a crazy chunk of cash and this SS for it, so here we are.  I know its a Ford forum, but I consider myself a Car Guy more than any "brand" guy...plus I know Mike picked up a V so at least he'll enjoy it!

This build has taken place over the past year slowly, I'm away over half the year for work, so progress was slow at times.  This thread will be a bit of a fast forward until present day.

The shop that build the blower laid down just under 1100BHP on a smaller displacement motor.   Were shooting for lower boost on the bigger motor, and hoping for 650-700 AWHP.  She should be on the dyno in the next few weeks when I get home.

The Truck
AWD 3SS
Black on black
100k miles
Bone stock

The Motor
Leading Edge Performance

416 LS3
Factory fresh LS3 block
Fully blueprinted
Lunati Voodoo 4340 4" stroker crank
Lunati 6.125" H-Beam rods with ARP bolts
Weisco Forged 4.07" pistons
Total seal rings
Clevite H series main and rod bearings
Durabond cam bearings
ARP main studs

LEP/Melling oil pump

Pistons showed up from Weisco on Feb-28, he had to custom order to get the CR we were looking for, short block should be finished in a couple weeks :)

Heads
WCCH Stage 3 CNC'd L92 heads
ARP head studs
LEP blower cam

WCCH just finished up the heads and they flowed just under 340cfm, and they got the combustion chambers out to 76cc which should put us right around 10.5:1 CR

Power Adder
LeftCoast32 custom jackshaft TVS2300

Fuel
85lb Siemens Dekka injectors
Aquamist HFS-5 meth kit, running 100% meth.

Still planning the pump(s)

Exhaust
Maryland Speed helped with a few exhaust components:
Kooks 1 7/8" headers, Swaintech coated
Dougs 3" electric cutouts

Synergy Auto Lab in Manchester is fabbing up the rest of the exhaust as we speak:
3" stainless true dual exhaust, Cutouts after the headers, with the rest into an X pipe and straight out the back.

Im pretty stoked for this - Ill get some photos up ASAP, but the fabrication skills that Jason at Synergy has are second to none; hes nothing short of an artist.

Transmission
Im going to catch a ton of #!#!#!#! for this, but this is yet another build where a lucky (or potentially unlucky) and very special 4L70E will get a chance to prove itself.

Tuning

I already have EFI Live V2 for my Duramax so Ill probably stick with that for tuning.

Not sure who will tune the truck just yet, but I have been talking with Don at Slowhawk Performance in Bridgewater, Mass who has done a number of very respectable LS builds.  This one is just not something I feel comfortable playing around with :)

Misc

Alvin and the rest of the crew at PCM4Less have been great about helping out with misc. parts and advice.

PCM SPAL e-fan kit
PCM wires and socks
PCM oil pan mod

The plan is for 700-750 awhp, and low 11's on street tires.  With a bit of suspension tuning and a set of DR's shell easily be a 10 second ride.

Well, its been a while since this has been updated.  Garth at Leading Edge Performance updated me with some shots yesterday:

The truck is also down at Synergy right now having the exhaust fabbed up.  After I posted some photos of the initial work Jason had done on the exhaust on the TBSSOwners forum, I received some messages from a guy in Canada who was impressed with Jason's work.  We chatted back and forth for a while, I told him about what he was doing for me and he mentioned he was interested in having Jason build something for him.  At first I though he would certainly flake out after cost/shipping etc were all factored in, but he got in touch with Jason and was serious about it!  I offered my truck up to Jason and the guys so they could fab a system for Frank while they had it in there for my work; win win for everyone!

Anyway, here are some shots of the headers back from Swaintech, installed and some photos of the system Jason is working on for Frank.  I believe its going to be a center exit dual system like the new CTS-V's have.

Not much new to report here, hoping the exhaust will be wrapped up in the next couple of days.  Synergy had some issues with their welder late last week so there a bit behind, but here is what they had done before the weekend:

Garth at Leading Edge just cut the cam based on the flow sheets for the heads WCCH cut for us; .640 .640 228/240 on a 116 lsa...glug glug glug.  Should make some sick power and be pretty drivable too.

Been a while since I updated this; but I've been busy the past few days.  I picked the truck up from Jay on Friday - there were a few things he wanted to make sure I was OK with as far as the setup goes, so this meant I left with a one tip that was a little limp.  No big deal, I needed the truck to start some of my work (and since were down a vehicle now!).

(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b359/CooperS7777/IMG_2147_zpsa743fc40.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/CooperS7777/media/IMG_2147_zpsa743fc40.jpg.html)

First step was wrapping up the ass end; new bumper plate, fix the SLP rear valence, and installed the inserts on either side of the hitch.  I have to say the SLP rear valence fits like complete #!#!#!#! - I ended up plasti-welding some bolts to the back of it, and drilling the bumper to get the sides ends to sit flush like there supposed to...we even went as far as replacing the double sided tape that came on it with some of the GOOD 3M #!#!#!#! and it wasnt enough to hold it in properly :/ If I didn't already have it painted, and the exhaust built around it Id be really tempted to pick up one of the TBM valences there producing again.

You can see the limp drivers side pipe in the photos above.

This morning I headed down to Synergy to get the drivers side tip back up where it should be, and to discuss some where and how well be installing the meth tank.

When I got home I had a package waiting from R1 Concepts.  I think these came pony express from California - it seems like Ive been waiting forever!  Old brakes are complete junk, so its been a bit nerve wracking moving her around without much in terms of stopping power.  These will be going on with new stainless lines, G2 coated calipers, and EBC green stuff pads.

I spent most of the evening in the garage working on the gauge pod.  There is only one company that makes a gauge pod for the SS; Lotek.  Turns out that just like the SLP rear valence, this thing fits like #!#!#!#! too.  They offer two ways of installing it; the first is over the stock pillar cover, screwed into place.  The second is in place of the stock pillar cover, screwed into place.  The interesting this is that if you decide to replace the stock cover with this, and screw it into place, you do so right into the side curtain airbag...

Here's what Ive been working on for a solution:

(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b359/CooperS7777/IMG_2177_zps1b273fec.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/CooperS7777/media/IMG_2177_zps1b273fec.jpg.html)
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b359/CooperS7777/IMG_2179_zps7eee8f27.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/CooperS7777/media/IMG_2179_zps7eee8f27.jpg.html)
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b359/CooperS7777/IMG_2178_zps3b33dde6.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/CooperS7777/media/IMG_2178_zps3b33dde6.jpg.html)

I hacked up the stock pillar and used the stock mounting points.  Ill plasti-weld these into place, cut the zip ties and fill/sand the outside.  After that Ill probably wrap the pod and passenger pillar in suede to match the seat inserts.

(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b359/CooperS7777/IMG_2176_zpscaacd28e.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/CooperS7777/media/IMG_2176_zpscaacd28e.jpg.html)

And I just stuck the AEM gauges in quick to see what they will look like, and to get a feel for which order I want to install them in.

Last but not least, a couple quick ones of my "garage"...not much but Ive got some new goodies (engine stand and hoist) that Im pretty pumped about :)

(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b359/CooperS7777/IMG_2164_zpsd72af83c.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/CooperS7777/media/IMG_2164_zpsd72af83c.jpg.html)

And the AWD pan being modded in the background here:

(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b359/CooperS7777/IMG_2163_zps5194e079.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/CooperS7777/media/IMG_2163_zps5194e079.jpg.html)

I also discovered, that while a palletized LS3 longblock will fit in the back of the van, its much harder to pick out with a cherry picker than it is to load up with a forklift!  Ill be giving it another shot after the weekend with a truck! Haha

Been busy the past few days again.  LOTS of parts starting to show up :)

Got some sick new wheels for the van:

(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b359/CooperS7777/IMG_2260_zpsc7776780.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/CooperS7777/media/IMG_2260_zpsc7776780.jpg.html)

Factory 2003 SSR wheels, staggered fit and tire size...should help the front diff live a long and healthy life.

Just kidding...we used these to move it in/out of the shop while we refinished the stockers - didnt want to tie up a lift/leave it on jack stands for a few days.

Spent the past 2 days refinishing the stock wheels.  The looked like garbage and didn't do the van justice.  I hunted and hunted for someone to blast these wheels...a few places I called were "out of media", other places simply didn't return calls, and one just flat out said we cant meet your deadline.  The idea was to pull the wheels off Wednesday night - blast all day thursday, and finish them today.  I recall the last time I blasted a set of wheels in the cabinet we have, and it SUCKED...I was not looking forward to doing it again, but I was left with no choice.

Here is just a little of what I started with Thursday AM:
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b359/CooperS7777/IMG_2263_zps3f98ab6d.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/CooperS7777/media/IMG_2263_zps3f98ab6d.jpg.html)

After some time in the cabinet:
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b359/CooperS7777/IMG_2259_zps281b7234.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/CooperS7777/media/IMG_2259_zps281b7234.jpg.html)
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b359/CooperS7777/IMG_2262_zps9e430c17.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/CooperS7777/media/IMG_2262_zps9e430c17.jpg.html)
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b359/CooperS7777/IMG_2264_zpsc93bb2c9.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/CooperS7777/media/IMG_2264_zpsc93bb2c9.jpg.html)

I honestly probably have 20 hrs of time in the cabinet with these...were simply not setup for something this size, but it was really the only option for the timeline I wanted things done in...

Last but not least, a pile of parts waiting for me when I got home!  Some fresh billet accessories from T-Mac Performance; the rest of the accessory pulleys:

And a pile of GM factory parts from PCM For Less of NC.  I could have ordered most of these from the local dealer - but the long and short of it is, they suck.  Anyway, new Camaro water pump, power steering pump, alternator as well as all new seals :)

Slapped new pads and rotors on the other day before I put the new wheels on:

Stockers were completely shot.  Ive got a second set of stock calipers and braided lines to go on, I just have to clean up and coat the calipers before install.  I wanted to keep stock sized brakes so I could have the option to run a set of Boze or True Forge 17's with DR's when the time comes.

And some finished shots of the wheels.

The inner barrel is GM Atomic Orange - from the newer Vettes.  It looks like a bit overbearing off the truck, but its very subtle with the wheels mounted up; I like the look we achieved.  Of course, there absolutley filthy after breaking in the new pads/rotors.

Figured Id share this too:

Joe asked me not to mentione anything until it hit the press, but he just dropped the ball on TBSS owners so I figured it was OK here too.  This one actually belongs to another TBSS owner from Ohio - but Joe has put a few of these together - I believe mine is the second, this one actually belongs to John.

It will also be featured in July's issue of Car Craft.

No photos just yet but big things should be happening in the next two weeks.  The truck is still down at Synergy - and they have been working on wrapping up a few things while I'm away - namely the meth system and the fuel system.

Fuel:
Aeromotive Eliminator stealth pump (in tank)
Aeromotive billet pump controller
Aeromotive A1000 regulator
Aeromotive billet Y block
Aeromotive 10 micron ORB filter
Aeroquip lines and fittings

And the transmission showed up at Synergy today.  Trans was built by Greg at Phoenix Transmission in Texas.  Here are the specs:

Billet 300M input shaft
Billet forward clutch hub
Billet intermediate shaft
Planetaries converted to 4L85e 5 pinion style
36 element HD intermdiate sprag and custom clutch drum
Extra frictions in forward intermidate and direct clutch packs
Wide intermediate band and apply piston
Reinforced low reverse band
AWD conversion with TBSS style output shaft
Billet torque converter adapter
2500 series trans to TC adapter
Modified valve body and pump; high pressure pump, billet accumulator pistons
All new internal electronics

Phoenix PTGM82/280 280mm 3000-3200 stall converter with hp friction plates, billet piston and 6 bolt billet front cover.

Basically lots of voodoo from one of the GM transmission gods - most of which I cant honestly claim to understand...though I have learned a lot from this project.  What I do understand is the net result; a ~1200bhp capable 4L80 that should live a long and healthy life.  The front diff and carrier bearing, that may be a different story.

The plan is to swap motor/trans/blower in starting next week. :D

Started off bright and early this morning...picked up a few of the engine tins at Extreme Powder Coating (which is actually right down the road from H&M).  Man, they did an amazing job.  Nice crisp lines, masked all the gasket surfaces, and even smoothed out all the casting marks.  Since I have to travel anyway for powder (no one left in the lakes region) I will definitely be back there the next time I need powder work!

No pictures of the tins yet...

But here are a few of everything else:

It went slower than we had hoped for, but that said - were doing everything right which is the most important thing.  Few silly problems along the way we had to solve - windage tray fitment was all sorts of fun due to the stroke, and then it was hitting on the pickup tube after we spaced it out with a few washers.

I forgot a few small parts amongst my million orders...rear main seal, new motor mounts, crank key...(OK, ok, some really f'in important parts!).  Gilberts in Manch was able to cut the 3" out of the rear drive shaft, but they were not able to lengthen the front drive shaft...which is kinda an issue.  Anyway, they have custom ordered one that should be in by the end of the week.

Right now the trans and motor are out of the truck, and we have just a few more things to do on the long block before it can go back in.  Hopefully by the end of the day tomorrow we will have the engine back in and the new trans.

Modified oil pan and pickup.  The factory pickup sits at the FRONT of the pan...which can cause some obvious problems on hard launches.  The factory windage tray was cut out (the first attempt by me cost an oil pan...Jay managed to get it first go round!) and new plates mounted to allow the pickup to be moved to the middle (and deepest part) of the tray.
(http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b359/CooperS7777/IMG_2570_zps79051440.jpg) (http://s23.photobucket.com/user/CooperS7777/media/IMG_2570_zps79051440.jpg.html)
And we finally managed to get the crank pulley on...I found some keystock at a local hardware store at 6am...and we proceeded to make our own key.  The first go round we noticed that the 3/16" keystock was not in fact 3/16" exactly, and the pulley was shaving metal off it as we tightened down.  After putting the pulley on and pulling it off about 4 times to make the proper modifcations - we nailed it!
And a couple pics of the modified pickup and the cuts we had to make in the windage tray to clearance the new pickup.  All in all a royal pain in the butt, but it should allow for a long healthy life.

And a shot of the bay after I went to town with some rags, degreaser and a can of rustoleum...still not a florida car but it looks a hell of a lot better.

And here is where shell sit for the next week while we wait on a few more parts.

Getting there...but it wont be done before I head back to work next week.  The good news is it should be done for the fall Kanc cruise - and if Im home Ill be there.

Wrapped all the coolant lines, breather lines etc. in tech flex.  Makes the engine bay look 100x better IMHO.  Im normally more function over form but I figured while it was all out, what the hell.

Ran the return lines from the rail to the regulator and mounted the regulator too.

Should be starting her up next week.  Its been a bit of a pain in the ass as work has been crazy and I travel for my job.  I thought we were going to have it up and running the end of last month but I ended up getting sent to Korea for all of November.

Anyway, here are a few updated shots.

This next post is just copied from TBSSOwners - but basically to sum it up we had DSX Tuning in St. Louis build this custom MAP sensor.

I just wanted to throw this out there to share.  We're wrapping up my 416/jack shaft 2300 build now and we had run into some problems with the MAP sensor.  I wanted to tune SD for a few reasons and we hard built the intake without a MAF port.

As we neared wrapping up the build we realized that the position of the sensor port on the LC32 made mounting a MAP sensor a bit tricky, especially on a build where we would be relying solely on the MAP signal and fitment/seal would be critical.

My original plan was to run a LS2 style sensor I had bought from Dave at DSX Tuning months ago.  I hadn't really bothered to check fitment as it wasn't on the top of my list.  I made a small bracket to hold the LS2 style sensor in the port but wasn't happy with it and soon noticed that the port size was actually bigger.

Anyway,  I contacted Dave and told him what I needed, essentially a mirrored image of an LS9 sensor so the wiring harness/connector faced away from the cog drive instead of into it.

The space is super tight so using my artistic abilities I traced the port/mounting area and took some measurements for Dave.

Center bore/center bore, diameter, bolt size etc we're all sent to Dave.

A few days later he sends me these photos:

And after another couple of days it showed up at my doorstep!!

I was a bit nervous of my measurements, but as it turned out they were spot on.

Dave's craftsmanship is second to none, this sensor look and fits exactly like you'd expect an OEM sensor to.  I should also point out that Dave informed me that the LS9 sensor would not work for me either as the 06 ECU will only support 2.5bar, and does not allow for negative scaling.   This certainly would have been another headache for me as I did not know this.

Thanks a ton for the help Dave!

TBSS with blown 416 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_cVLuTa5ig#ws)

Im pretty sure any problem you can have with a build like this we've run into, but today defiantly got me pumped up again to wrap this baby up!

I wish I had a way of accurately capturing the noises this thing makes.  With the cutouts closed, standing behind the truck, you can feel the rumble in your chest.  I don't honestly think someone could hear this thing and not have a $hit eating grin come across their face.

Edit - couldn't figure out how to embed a photobucket video so I stuck it up on YouTube.

Your lightly modded TBSS sounds GOOD!   11 second on street tires, that MUST be fun!  I think we have a Ford Expedition on here that runs in that range as well.

Equal length headers?  Underdrive and/or lightweight pulleys?  Any mods to the 4L70E trans (known power handling limits)?  How much boost are you planning to run?
Title: Re: Coops Blown 416 TBSS
Post by: CooperS7777 on May 14, 2014, 08:01:27 AM
10% OD on the crank and a 2.9" front blower pulley.  The rear cog drive is 1:1.  It should yield about 16lbs of boost on the 416.

Trans is a Phoenix 4l80e now, it will take everything we can throw at it, the weak link will be the front diff.  Unfortunatly there are no upgrades for the diff so well see how long she lasts.  I think it will be fine with street tires but when we go to drag radials I'll likely grenade it!

I've owned several GM products and have my reasons for not being a GM fan, but between Mike's V and your TBSS, or "van" as you call it, I'm having a hard time not poking around on AutoTrader for a fun 2nd vehicle. Much respect for the amount of time and effort you've put into the TBSS. I think any car guy, regardless of brand preference, can acknowledge that much!
