Title: Should I be rebuilding my turbos at 130k miles?
Post by: Gray Brick on April 30, 2018, 01:15:24 AM
I know Ford says these turbos are good until 100k miles but what is everyone really seeing?

I thought Ford said @ 150K !   Z

The EcoBoost engineering design life is 10 years and 150,000 miles.

The real question is how many of these snails are actually making it to 100K miles?

You guys are scaring me :-p   At least they are relatively cheap to replace (cost of turbo itself) if you can do the work yourself...

I had my front turbo go out at 84k and replaced both with OEM. Would do a CHRA upgrade if I could do it again but I needed the car running so went this route. The high altitude here makes it hard for the turbos to make boost, that could be a reason for the early failure.

What went bad on the turbos?

Front turbo had a ton of shaft play. No signs of anything passing through the turbo or evidence of engine wear in the oil. Tech who replaced them said it looked like it was "over worked" and "spun". I assume that is taking well passed it efficiency range to long and to often. The rear on was fine. I have a picture of the turbo I will try and dig it up. Front is easy to check take the IC tube off look for damage and feel for play with your hand.

89k on mine and i can see more some more oil in the intake track. So far so good though.

My wastegate duty cycle is going to 90% at 16 pounds of boost.

Looking at my options now....

Mine went out at about 83K. But no idea how they were treated before I got the vehicle.

Good question from what I understand it is harder for turbos to reach target boost pressure at altitude. Here in the Springs I am at and average of 5500.

Yes, the air is not as dense the higher the altitude. It takes more effort to compress the air to hit target psi..

if the op is not at high altitude and seeing high WGDC like that then something is def not right and turbos are most likely at fault

Nope.... 400 feet above sea level.

I would check for boost leaks. The couplers on the hoses that connect to turbo's are known to crack.

Pressurized the system to 20psi no boost leaks...

Then check the compressors for shaft play.... if there isn't any shaft play, and your intake track isn't covered in oil, it's probably not the turbos...

Additionally try cleaning the MAP sensor on the intake manifold AND before the throttle plate.

Livernois tuned since 60k miles, now have 98k miles and 8 years old. No engine/turbo/trans issues... Knock on wood.

So far so good at 104K. Tuned since 2500 miles. Trans is getting a little too much free play though.
