Title: So this happened last Monday . . .
Post by: BBOX on March 10, 2014, 04:37:11 PM
Idiot making a left-hand turn and trying to cut through traffic that was stopped to cross a three lane road, I was in the middle lane, pulled out from in front of a stopped car in the left lane and BAM.  :curse:

I'm in one piece though my neck and back aren't real thrilled with me at the moment, and fortunately the other driver is insured.

Real bummer... Sorry to hear about the collision.  What you describe is one of my pet peeves here in Phoenix as it's the norm rather than exception.

Glad to hear you weren't seriously injured.  Cars are easier  to fix than people.

Hopefully the damage is mostly cosmetic.

It's the norm here in the Chicagoland area too, and it makes my blood boil. The best case scenario is the person doing it ends up blocking traffic while playing real-life Frogger, the worst case scenario is this crap.

I'm already doing physical therapy to try to get better, I thought I was just shaken up at first but after a couple days I was in pretty substantial pain so I finally went to the doctor to get evaluated, hopefully it won't take too long to get me back up to speed but we'll see.

Damage appears to be mostly cosmetic, the body shop is taking the front end apart as we speak to see if there's any more substantial damage that wasn't uncovered during the initial inspection. Estimate comes out to over ten large so I'm sure glad I'm not footing the bill.

Sorry about your accident.  Glad you didn't get hurt too bad.  Is that part of an air bag I see?

 Man that SERIUOSLY SUCK ...

I'm surprised the Insurance Company didn't consider it a total loss .

I'd get an attorney to be on the safe side .

Yeah, driver's side deployed. Seatbelts did their job so I didn't really get slammed in to the airbag miraculously, but man air bag tastes and smells AWFUL, it took a solid day to cycle that out of my nose and mouth.

I'm gonna see one tomorrow, I haven't heard anything from the insurance company suggesting they're going to try any shenanigans but I'm going to be livid if they try to total the car out, I love my MKS and it sucks that some other moron damaged it like this when I try so hard to keep the car in outstanding shape.

Don't settle the medical until you're well.   Demand replacement cost (that is another MKS the same year, condition, and trim)... not a payment for the car if they should total it

Really sad to see this, glad you are still walking/talking!  One of my most favorite colors too!  Bill for the car probably around $3,500 at least.  Suspension & frame should be thoroughly checked for alignment.  Hope you will find a great chiropractor.

As others have said - glad you were not seriously hurt. I cringed when I saw your pics, that poor lincoln (LOVE your plates).

RE: Airbag smell/taste - I would go and have your eyes checked, there has been some data suggesting that the (for lack of better term) exhaust from them can cause eye issues. Better safe than sorry and before you settle the med bill with insurance.

Again - hope you get to feeling better and the ride is fixed up soon.

I know im new around here and its my first forum post....but I am glad you weren't seriously hurt!!!
If the car is not totaled out make sure the insurance company gives you money for DIMINISHED VALUE. The car is now on car fax with an accident and its no longer ORIGINAL paint. Down the road from now that could come into play! I would tell the insurance company you're going to sell the car immediately after its fixed= diminished value should be higher!
sorry to hear about your mishap thanks to a careless driver!! hope the therapy works sooner than expected for you!

I'll echo everyone else's comments! Hate to see it crashed. Good to hear your OK. Looks like the car did its job in protecting you. Love your license plates!
Did your car automatically dial 911 thru your phone? I've always wondered how Sync handles that phone call (what is said, etc.)

+1 on this - we did that years ago when our explorer was t-boned to the tune of 15k damage. Had to fight the ins co but finally won a 5k settlement on top of the repairs.

Great advice, make it +3
Insurance companies will sometimes fix a car (happened to me in '67 when I got T-boned by a car going 70... within 100 miles the rear end started growling and I had to argue to total the car... which they did because I didn't sign the original release until I drove it... and had to argue for cost of replacement (more than the car's value)

Thanks to everyone again for the concern, shows what a nice community we have here. Also thanks for the people who have complemented my license plates, though one of my friends suggested they might also stand for "Hit Red Lincoln" after the fact, haha.

I swung by the body shop today, they had originally hoped to have the car done by Friday but as I suspected, it's going to be longer than that. They found some things the insurance adjuster missed, I think the seatbelt and airbag were the major ones. With these items I anticipate the total damage to now push north of $11k since it was already a touch over $10,600. The insurance company has made no mention of totaling out the car so far, hopefully that remains. I'm not sure how they would calculate the total out value of the car but I took at look at KBB trade value to try to get a rough ballpark and they're not really close to that so I'm hoping there won't be any funny business.

I've already started physical therapy and the major pain has mostly subsided or is at least under control with the high volume Ibuprofen and the muscle relaxers. I do feel tired more easily than I did before the accident and feel like I need more sleep, but I'm hoping my energy levels will return as my recovery progresses.

I've heard a bit about the diminished value claim, I'm definitely going to speak to a lawyer, besides the damage to the car I was out of work for the last week because I couldn't sit or stand for too long and since I'm a contractor, if I don't work, I don't get paid so I kinda feel like that should be taken care of too.

To the person who asked about Sync dialing 911, it did it flawlessly, I had the phone in my jacket pocket and ended up getting a call back from the 911 center because I was outside of the car but had I been incapacitated I do believe the system would have worked as intended.

Love the plate!  Here is my MKS also with 11k in damage.  They never made it right which is what led me to trade it in on the ecoboost I have now.

Glad your feeling better...

Sorry to hear about the magnitude of the problem on the car.  You not only have the damage now, but also the decreased value both now and in future due to the accident and absence of a clean CarFax.

That's that Dark Ink Blue right? Oh man I love that color so much, I was disappointed as hell when I found out I couldn't have it and the Ecoboost engine when I started looking for cars, I think it's simply stunning. What happened to yours, it doesn't look too bad but clearly looks can be deceiving.

Yeah, diminished value is going to be discussed when it's time to settle everything, I'm not real thrilled about what this accident is going to do to its resale value.

Yeah it was dark ink with cashmere interior. It really was a gorgeous car. It was cursed though as far as I was concerned. Shortly after buying it I saw evidence that it had been repainted on the back of the drivers side. Found scratches on the drivers door glass that looked like it had been broken into. Then I was backing slowly out of a parking spot and someone clipped the rear bumper. I never did get that fixed. It had a few things that never worked 100%. Then I was day dreaming apparently and when I came to there was a focus stopped in front of me. It didn't look like much but the bumper collapsed to the frame cross support and bounced back. Popped my airbag. They did a crap job on the paint match and I was never going to be happy with it. They also put 3 driver side headlights in it before getting one that I could align and it still had a horrible beam pattern. I was so happy this dealer had a sport appearance MKS and we could work out a deal. No money down, I just signed some papers and started a new loan for the same payments I had before. Seemed like a no brainer. And that was with the rear bumper still damaged!

Edit: forgot to mention I bought it 3 years old with 13000 miles on it!  It still only had 52 when I traded it in.
