Title: MSD coils ..Any benefit or negatives ?
Post by: TopherSho on July 31, 2019, 04:32:41 PM

I feel like at 10 years old it is time to replace the Coils.. since the OEMS are about the same price why not the MSD's .. thoughts ?

I've been researching these as well. I ordered a set from Amazon and will have them Friday so I will try to review them. I can't remember the website but I remember a Dyno graph that showed 9hp gain I believe. I'll try to dig up a link.

I ran them on the poltergeist for roughly 10k miles or so. I didnt notice much as far as power gains. But I did also run my best et's with them on. I will say they did smooth out my idle a ton. And as far as taking your wife. Mine is still here..........but she is pregnant

I was thinking about the glory days of the MSD 6AL boxes and how much of an impact their coils and caps made 20 years ago. My first car was a 1970 olds 442. I regret selling it at least once a month...
I'm looking forward to having MSD under the hood again.

Given the spark related problems you have had I am surprised you have not already upgraded months ago Topher.  Never heard a report form anyone saying anything other than how they run better than stock.  Seems like a no brainer.

A man I respect a ton, Matt Robinson at gearhead, tested these and saw gains. There is an article for them where it shows his testing and he gained something like 5 hp, but it wasn't just peak there was a range of increases. I'll take his testing on it. I rock them on my sho and have for about a year now

Correct 2pin for 2010, 3 pin for 2013+

Ok .. i did not plan on buying more parts for this car givens it's perpetual state of breakdowns but i am buying these.

https://www.holley.com/products/ignition/ignition_coils/late_model_coil_packs/ford-lincoln-mercury/ford_ecoboost_coils/parts/82586 (https://www.holley.com/products/ignition/ignition_coils/late_model_coil_packs/ford-lincoln-mercury/ford_ecoboost_coils/parts/82586)

I intend to get this at some point.  I don't expect much in terms of gains, but if it gets better MPG with a smoother idle then it may be worth it.

maybe its just the new part feel, but it feels stronger on just part throttle even, hopefully get a chance for some stoplight fun at some point this weekend. just did some around town errands and it's definitely smoother at idle

Thanks... That what I had seen before. I guess its just a glitch in their system info. See attached screenshot...

Odd. As far as I know they make 2 pin and 3 pin and they are available in black, blue, and red. Make sure you get some dielectric grease, they don't come with any.

They do produce a small amount of additional power to the plugs...

Nice 63degree morning, made me realize I need tires lol
Overall I drove 320miles on the new coils. Gained 1.1mpg on highway but that could've been my lack of highway challenges.(only had 1 WRX try to run)  Feels more responsive during merging and quick passes. So far, I'd say I'm happy.

I've got about a week on a lightly used MSD set that I picked up from ShoNoff's sale and re-gapped the year old plugs at .030". I'm still un-tuned at this point and it sure feels like it revs smoother and stronger. I'd have to say it was an improvement over the OEM. Also happy to see the plugs were still clean as the day I installed them. 30 years ago, reading the plugs was a required art, unless the engine has an issue now it looks like more of an afterthought.

i remember my very first car was a 70 olds 442 my dad and i rebuilt, he taught me how to tune it and do all of the maintenance, reading the plugs and setting the fuel mixture and timing....i still regret selling it 20 years ago...

Glad to see they are still going strong in another sho
