I think I may need a new rack or motor.

I'm experiencing symptoms that I believe are signs of a bad rack or steering motor.  Recently my wheel has been feeling a bit stiff, and today it felt like it was struggling to provide assist as I was steering, kind of like how being down on fluid feels on a hydraulic rack.  Has anyone had these symptoms, and just replaced the motor?  If you had to replace the rack, is it possible without dropping the engine cradle?  Thanks for any suggestions.

How many miles on your SHO! Did you check for Codes!
The Rack and Motor is a one piece unit (assembly) and think you need to drop the Rack in order to gain access to the Motor IIRC!

Here are a couple links to give you some insight.  Z

I have not checked for codes, can I use a regular scantool/SCT Xcal?

Mine is a 2013 SHO with 120k.

Thanks for the links.

I'm sorry to hear this. I've been seeing more and more of these racks going out on FB and here now too. I wonder if they will end up recalling them. I believe the ones I've seen have been 2013 SHO's too. It's a pricey repair. Almost 3k if I recall my bill out the door. It does have 3 year unlimited mile warranty though.

Curious how this install went?
My 2013 has had a power steering fault on 3 occasions in the past 2 years, there is no warning just the fault and a service traction warning along with a total loss of power steering.
If I shut the car off and wait a minute, it is fine and back to normal.
I guess this means I am on borrowed time with my rack!
My car has 157k on it.
Thanks Greg

The project is finished.  Since I have AWD, in order to drop the rear subframe to get access to the rack, I had to not only drop the entire exhaust, but I had to drop the driveshaft.  Otherwise, the rack cannot be removed, short of dropping the entire subframe.

Steering is much better, but it isn't like it was originally.  It feels artificially hard to turn, and I'm wondering if the module needs a reflash.  I recently had an alignment, and it's well within specs, but my steering wheel is not centered when the car is going straight.  It's about 12:30, instead of noon, and I wonder if that has anything to to with the artificially hard effort of the wheel.

If anyone has any questions as to the procedure, I'll happily answer them.

I think we discussed this in another thread, but you are on the right track re: recalibration  IIRC.

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

I just had this done on the MKS and it did require a module flash which also triggered an ECM strategy change.
