P0130 and p0303

So driving along just fine and I start to misfire.  Pull over and run the codes and it's p0130 and p0303.  Bank 1 sensor 1 o2 sensor circuit and cylinder 3 misfire.  Stuck on the side of the road waiting for a truck now.

I'm assuming the o2 sensor died on me is causing the misfire since both were simultaneous.  Plugs are brand new motorcrafts I just changed about 3k miles ago.  I'll pull the plug and swap coils when I get home, but have a few questions you guys might be able to help with.

Anyone know which o2 sensor is bank 1? Firewall or radiator side?

And which cylinder is cylinder 3 if I'm looking straight at the engine?

Dang man. I hope everything works out. I don't want to give out false advice, so I will say nothing.

Almost 3 hours later and still waiting on AAA.

Car won't turn over either now.  I'm hoping it's some kind of safety feature because it's misfiring.  Did a freeze frame and ST fuel trim was at like -28% for bank 1.  I guess that's to prevent the injectors from flooding the cylinders during a misfire.

What a fun night...

Wow, sorry to hear!  On both car & AAA.  p0303 could be caused by oil leaking from the valve cover gasket, that is common.  BUT I think it is a fuel injector issue much more likely.

Yeah, no fun at all :(  But knowing how handy you are, I bet you could swap out injectors yourself and be on your way!!!  Deebeaux has provided a writeup on his project, HTH.

Damn sorry to hear pmezo33!  X2 on above check cylinder number 3 which is the closest to the Drivers side Rear Bank 1 by firewall.
I would also try to rule out a bad Coil or (COP).
I believe Bank 1 is the Rear Bank by Firewall IIRC.
Best of luck and keep us updated. Z

No oil on the plug but there's definitely fuel. Guess it's time for an injector.  How does this explain the p0130 though?  Think the o2 was cutting fuel so much because of the misfire on 3 that it's coming up as a fault?

pmezo33

Switched the coils and started up the car.  Ton of white smoking pouring out the exhaust that i didn't notice last night because it's dark.  Stinks like fuel.  Shut it off immediately.  Fuel injector #3 time.

I would not try starting it up any more avoiding further damage.
It sounds like the Failsafe feature was enabled to help protect the engine.

The wrench on the dash never came up.  Just the blinking CEL code.  The car is being rolled if i have to move it at all.  Hopefully i didn't destroy that cat in the short drive i had to do.  I was in a construction zone in about 20 mph traffic on the highway when it started misfiring, so i had about a mile of misfiring and driving before i was able to pull over.  Fuel trims were cut big time and it stinks like gas now.

I just experienced my first P0303. I was on the on ramp picking up speed when I felt kind of a shudder and the CEL came on. I could feel the car shaking (missing?) at highway speed and I was hoping to get 10 more miles to get home. After about 3 miles the CEL went out and the car went smooth. I pulled #3 plug and it looked quite good. So I decided to swap the plug and coil with a different cylinder to see if the code would reoccur on a different cylinder. Then I checked the gap. It was over .040". So I regapped them all to .030" and found another at over .040". Took it for a drive afterwards and the car has never run better. I'm an easy driver and have around 15k on these plugs.

Codes are set when total fuel trim exceeds 25% + or -, IIRC, you said STFT was -28 or so?  I would agree that is why the p0130 was set.  I dont think the sensor gets ruined by a short term fuel overload, as long as it gets burned off.  Have you ever replaced the O2s in your MKS?

I replaced both the upstream o2's at about 75k miles.  Just about done with the injector.  Hardest part is getting these hoses off.  At 150k miles, they're almost glued on.  And wow are my valves covered with oil.  I can really see that being an issue down the road.

I'm going to finish putting the manifold back on and take it for a ride.  Let's hope this fixes it.

I checked the codes again and i'm also getting p00c6 - fuel pressure rail too low along with the p0306.  The p0130 isn't showing up anymore.  Just p00c6 and p0303.  Really don't think this is o2 related given the amount of smoke blowing out the exhaust and the stink of fuel in the engine bay before i started pulling everything.

Now does anyone have any tips of getting this fuel smell out of the car?  I'm probably just going to soak the engine and spray down with heavy degreaser.  Hopefully that gets rid of all this fuel in the bay after pulling all these lines.

That was quick!  Took me a week of driving with the windows down to get the fuel smell out of the Edge after I brought home the old fuel pump.  Really shoulda bagged it at the shop, yech. Fumarix might work, I think they sell it at Walmart.

As far a the code, hope it is transitory from doing the work.  Might want to do a KAM reset otherwise.

Forgot to update you guys about this thread.  Injector #3 was the problem.  It was stuck open and needed to be replaced.

Job wasn't so hard.  It was a little time consuming and tedious, but not that big of a deal.  Injectors for this car isn't cheap.  Ford charged me $150 for the injector and then another $30 so for gaskets and hardware.

Word of advice for everyone.   Get yourself a good radiator pick if you don't already have one.  Something like this.  My upper radiator hose was glued on to the manifold.  Really every hose was pain to remove.

https://www.amazon.com/OTC-4521-Hose-Removal-Tool/dp/B0050SFZBG

ST fuel trims are back down to 0 for both banks with the new injector.  I'm just worried about the bank 1 cat at this point.  I hope i didn't flood it with too much fuel.  I really don't want to see that p0420 code.

Should burn right off.  Just dont take short trips, that is never good for the fuel system or the cats.
