Car was making a knocking/popping noise at random times. Wife took it in to a local shop, no problem found after many miles and a few days of troubleshooting. I had them change the oil as it was a good bit overdue. After the oil change she picked up the car and began driving my son to football practice. The car began smoking from the exhaust, by this time the shop was closed for the weekend. She kept it parked until I got home three days later. I check the oil level was on the high end but good but it was very black. Air breather filter was a little dirty but no oil. Then I pulled the tube from the PCV valve to the intake manifold and oil poured out, a lot of oil. I removed the PCV and air/oil separator, they were completely full of black oil. The car goes back to the shop and they tell me I have blown turbos and it would be $2600 to replace them. I trust the guys at this shop but it is funny to me that the turbos never leaked or made noise before we brought it in. Actually they still don't make noise and still seem to be putting out boost. Any advice on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated. I can do most work myself.

Blue smoke, definitely burning oil as it was pouring into the intake. Oil is still black but he said it was much worse before. No code shows up, no warnings or lights lit.

Blue smoke would suggest and indicates burning oil which is the most common or has high mileage, than most likely the piston rings have worn down and oil is getting by the piston as it moves down the cylinder wall. It then gets burned with the fuel, which produces the blue smoke.

If white smoke is present with a blueish hue to it its unfortunately your(Turbo seals) .
Do you have an ESP? If so would take it to a reputable Ford, preferably a Lincoln dealer for a 2nd opinion.  Z

IMHO would get a 2nd opinion, especially with no warranty.  Z

^ this.  Ford has had some issues with its PCV system, here and with the TiVCT 3.5/3.7NA on 2011-13  Edge/MKX etc.  There also fix was valve cover replacement, on the cleanside.

Thanks guys, I think I will try to fix it myself. Could over filling with oil do this sort of thing? A guy at the shop said it was possible that one guy started filling before the other guy drained it.

Could be.  Make sure the oil level is right, check and clean all turbo piping + intercooler, and monitor.  Chances are still in favor of new valve cover, but let's see!
