Scared to run LMS v10 93

Hey guys,
After getting my engine replaced from cracked piston/head I am extremely reluctant to run the 93 LMS tune. Hours of reading all point to funky timing the only thing that could cause parts in the engine to crack. It seems a little odd that manufacturer defect would cause the engine to fail after 65k miles but absolutely possible. So my conscience is telling me to be safe and just run the LMS 91 octane tune while still filling up with 93. What do you guys think?

It's probably just my nature, but I would not run any tune without data logging it to make sure it's safe.  Every car is different and I would not want mine to be the one that falls outside of the norm and nukes itself.

I would work on the data log ability side and then you can run the various tunes to check them out.  Several on here are extremely helpful if you need assistance in reading the logs.  I know that I do!

There are so many fail safes in place to prevent the engine from knocking...Even if you ran the V10 tune and the spark curve was too aggressive for the fuel you run the Octane adjust ratio would scale spark back and on the immediate side, the knock sensor would retard spark on the spot

You would have to recklessly disable some of the failsafes to actuallydestroy an engine due to aggressive spark.

And as a large company the chances of them doing that are probably non existent.

Stock engines fail all the time.....There quite possibly could've been small defects in the internal structure of the internal parts that were bound to cause a failure, add to that the tune with increased power on top of that and you have a recipe for failure.

The quality control on a mass produced mid level car of internal engine components  is most likely nothing more than a visual inspection that won't catch much.

Very good points AJP.  Added to that is the fact that LMS has an excellent track record of not hurting motors.

On the flip side, I'd also be rather nervous going forward if I had already nuked one motor.

polskifacet, did the dealer take a real good look at the fuel system?  I would want to make sure you don't have any codes or pending codes for fueling issues.  Just kind of thinking out loud...a leaky injector or failing pump could also lead to engine failure.  A minor thing could become more major with a tune.

@polskifacet we are sorry that this happened for sure! We would also like to help instill that level of confidence back in you. Is there a way that we can contact you to find out more? Like aj and sho have mentioned, we have not had failure issues. There are several very recent TSB's that are fueling system related. A larger demand for fuel if there is no fuel to be had could result in a bad situation.

If I really wanted assurance about the engine, I'd have it blueprinted first.  For the Gen I's & II's, FPS in Atlanta used to (still might) offer those services in addition to the gofast upgrades for Gen I & Gen II SHOs.  If you are going to have it bluepriinted, might as well get a built block out of it.

Short of that, I'd let the engine "break in" first, datalog as much as I could with Torque Pro/Forscan just to get familiar with it.  Give it a 1000 miles or so.  THEN load up a tune and fire away, using only Top Tier gasoline and full synthetic engine oil.  I have advocated giving a tuned car the best diet & maintenance if you want it to last, and I still do.  No skimping on fluids/fluid change intervals.  What more can a person do?  Beyond that, it's chance/fate.

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

Sorry to here about your motor puking, and understand being nervous on running a tune again.  I would do there break in period, then tune it again.  Crack piston sounds like more a defect when the piston was made, than a tuning issue.  I'm racing with the 91 V10 here. Its has been flawless and actually runs better than 93 V10.  I've been Friday night racing every Friday since being of April, so you have an idea of that my '13 goes thru.  I also don't thump on it when I drive it on the street.

I had just in stalled a 93 2bar tune from Livernois and then my intercooler blew up. I know it wasn't their fault, it was ready to break anyway. I was still afraid to get back on the horse for awhile, but I did and I'm loving it. I've done even more mods etc since that happened. I'm sticking with Livernois for life! Best parts, best tunes, and best customer service!

Thanks again guys for the great tunes, parts, and all of your help! Keep up the good work!
