I'm in the process of changing out my bank 1 sensor 1 oxygen sensor. I have the sensor broken free but I'm struggling with the electrical connector. Are there any tips anyone has for getting the old connector disconnected? There is no room in which to work, I'm pretty much working blind.

Take the new sensor, and find the Allen wrench that fits snugly in the square part, where you need to depress the little plastic lever to get the thing to unlock the wiring connector. To get the connector apart, stick that hex wrench as far as it will go into the wiring connector. It will stay in there by friction and unlock the locking lever.
Some English Allen wrench fits perfectly. Once you push it in there, it will stay in there all by itself, keeping the tiny lever unlocked. Then you can grab the bottom of the connector with a pair of extra long needle nose pliers and disconnect it easily. If it doesn't come out with a slight pull, it isn't unlocked. Z

I was able to disconnect it from going from the top. You can see it from under the car but hard to get too. Braille method is pretty much it...

Agreed with SBS unplug the harness from up top using a 7/8 end wrench end or better yet an 02 sensor socket.  Z

Thanks for the help guys. I was able to get the electrical connector separated from the top as suggested, I think it would have been close to impossible from the bottom.

It's possible but extremely uncomfortable! You also need to be double jointed!

Also, dunno yet if you put in the new one... but I used a shoe lace to tie to the electrical connector so I could drop the whole thing down from the top, screw it in, and pull the shoe lace back up with then connector to plug it back in.. worked like charm!

Replaced with Motorcraft DY-1183. Finished the job this morning, took vehicle for a quick highway blast and it seems to be running better. Checked for codes upon my return and none were pending. Next job heater blend door actuator.

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!
