FORD EXPLORER CARBON MONOXIDE RECALL NEEDED, SAYS SAFETY

January 25, 2018 — A Ford Explorer carbon monoxide recall is the only way to ensure exhaust fume leaks are permanently fixed in about 1.3 million SUVs in the U.S., according to a letter sent to Ford from the Center for Auto Safety (CAS).

CAS claims carbon monoxide complaints have increased 900 percent since NHTSA opened its investigation in July 2016, and the Center says that doesn't count more than 2,000 complaints Ford received from customers.

Ford announced a "complimentary service" program in October 2017 for about 1.4 million model year 2011-2017 Explorers in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, with about 1.3 million of those SUVs on American roads.

The non-recall "program" continues until December 31, 2018, with dealers sealing the rear of the SUVs, reprogramming the air conditioners and replacing liftgate drain valves.

CAS says Ford should take the extra and necessary steps by ordering an official recall to replace cracked exhaust manifolds that allow carbon monoxide to enter the cabins. The manifolds are a target for federal investigators who have found evidence of cracks allowing exhaust fumes and carbon monoxide into the SUVs.  Z

FORD DOOR AJAR SENSOR LAWSUIT SAYS WARNING LIGHTS STAY ON.

March 18, 2018 — A Ford "door ajar" sensor lawsuit claims the sensors send false signals that the doors are open when they are in fact closed.
According to the plaintiffs, the door latch assembly uses an electro-mechanical switch (sensor) that detects whether the door is open or closed based on the voltage signal received from the sensor. In addition, a body control module monitors the voltage from the door latch switch to determine whether the door is open or closed.

The lawsuit alleges that when the switch indicates the door is closed, the module sends a "wetting current" through the electrical connector from the door latch switch to the control module that is meant to keep the sensor clean from oxidation. The oxidation typically comes from humidity and moisture, but the wetting current is too low to keep the switch clean.  Z

FORD EXPLORER EXHAUST LEAK RECALL NEEDED: SAFETY GROUP
Center for Auto Safety says Ford should recall 1.3 million Ford Explorers over exhaust leaks.  Z

JULY 4, 2018 — A Ford Explorer exhaust leak recall should be ordered for 2011-2017 SUVs to prevent occupants from exhaust fumes and carbon monoxide, according to the Center for Auto Safety (CAS).

The safety agency says customers continue to complain about exhaust leaks in the cabins of the Explorers even after Ford dealers allegedly fixed the leaks.

It's been two years since the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation into possible exhaust leaks in about 1.3 million SUVs in the U.S. According to the Center, while NHTSA has failed to complete the investigation, Ford has also failed to fix the exhaust and carbon monoxide danger.

The exhaust leak issue has followed Ford with a grim persistence for the past few years after customers complained of smelling exhaust fumes and getting sick while in the Explorers.

CAS claims carbon monoxide complaints have increased dramitically since NHTSA opened its investigation in July 2016, and the complaints continued to increase after Ford announced a "complimentary service" program in October 2017 for about 1.3 million 2011-2017 Explorers in the U.S.

Ford says it will keep the program open until December 31, 2018, requiring dealers to seal the rear of the SUVs, reprogram the air conditioners and replace liftgate drain valves.

FORD EXPLORER CARBON MONOXIDE CONCERNS HEARD IN COURT!

JULY 23, 2018 — Ford Explorer carbon monoxide concerns have caused a class-action lawsuit that alleges exhaust fumes and poisonous gas enters the cabins of the SUVs while driving.  Z

Plaintiffs Suresh Persad, Daniel G. Wright and Robert S. Drummond filed the class-action lawsuit that includes all consumers in the U.S. who purchased or leased 2016-2017 Ford Explorers.

The SUVs allegedly have defective exhaust and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems that allow carbon monoxide to sicken occupants.

TSB 14-0130 suggested the following repairs for dealers to try:

Reprogram the HVAC system
Replace the left side rear air extractor
Inspect the drain valves and install new drain valves if needed
Seal the rear horizontal sheet metal lap joints and the rear sheet metal overlap flanges
Apply undercoating to the auxiliary air conditioning lines and sealed areas
Neither TSB 12-12-4 nor TSB 14-0130 mention carbon monoxide dangers and the plaintiffs claim the numerous possible "fixes" shows Ford has no clue how to permanently repair the problems.

FORD EXPLORER CARBON MONOXIDE LAWSUIT WON'T BE DISMISSED
Ford fails in motion to dismiss carbon monoxide class-action lawsuit for 2016-2017 Ford Explorer.  Z   :(

OCTOBER 28, 2018 — A Ford Explorer carbon monoxide lawsuit won't be dismissed after the plaintiffs adequately pleaded claims the SUVs have defects that allow dangerous exhaust fumes into the cabins.

One plaintiff claims he took his Explorer to a dealer after he smelled exhaust fumes in the SUV. The dealer allegedly drove the vehicle and couldn't detect the fumes, so the plaintiff says technicians refused to repair the Explorer.

The other two named plaintiffs claim they smelled exhaust odors in the cabins but never took the vehicles to dealers to have the vehicles examined.

The Explorer lawsuit alleges occupants are poisoned by their 2016-2017 Ford SUVs because of defects in the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) and exhaust systems. According to the plaintiffs, Ford concealed knowledge of the carbon monoxide problems even though dealers were sent technical service bulletins (TSBs) warning of exhaust fumes.

Ford issued TSB 12-12-4 in December 2012 about exhaust fume complaints made by owners of 2011-2013 Ford Explorers, then TSB 14-0130 was issued in July 2014 to include 2014-2015 Explorers. The bulletin referred to exhaust and sulfur smells reported when the auxiliary climate control systems were on

FORD EXPLORER POLICE INTERCEPTOR INVESTIGATION CLOSED

NOVEMBER 9, 2018 — A Ford Explorer Police Interceptor brake hose investigation has been closed by the government after investigators determined more than 20,000 model year 2015 SUVs are safe to drive.

I dunno.  No one in the civilian world has had this complaint that I know of.  Would like to gain insight into what exactly is so special about Sacramento police training to cause these leaks.  Certainly could be maintenance related like Ford claims, but we could use an investigation independent of the police the NHTSA and Ford.  Maybe letting the caliper hang freely during pad replacement and such.

Brings to mind also the whole noxious gas issue blamed on aftermarket modifications to firewall passthru plugs.

FORD EXPLORER POLICE INTERCEPTOR CARBON MONOXIDE LAWSUIT FILED. Z

MAY 10, 2019 — A Ford Explorer Police Interceptor carbon monoxide lawsuit alleges two California officers were killed in a crash caused by defects found in the Explorer.

Stanislaus County Deputy Sheriff Jason Garner and civilian Community Service Officer Raschel Johnson were killed responding to call, but without their lights and siren activated.

According to court records, the crash occurred on May 17, 2017, when officers Garner and Johnson were traveling with Garner behind the wheel. The lawsuit alleges carbon monoxide allegedly entered the passenger compartment and caused Mr. Garner to lose consciousness.

The Explorer crossed a yellow line and went off the road, accelerating to about 89 mph when the SUV struck a steel post and other wrecking yard debris. The lawsuit says the Explorer hit a storage bin and caught fire, with both occupants pronounced dead at the scene.
