Looking into a SHO....

What's up ladies? My name is Aaron. Looking into a new car and the SHO has reached top of the list. Need a full size auto that's performance oriented. Want an SS manual, but is too far out of price range. Dodge/Chrysler vehicles are out of the question. So it came down to a SHO PP or a G8 GT. AWD put the SHO on top due to Michigan's lovely weather. I am more the capable of RWD winter fun, but the wife is anti-RWD. So.....SHO.

Current vehicle is a 2006 Focus ST, non-turbo 2.3L with lots of mods. Had it since new, 350k plus miles. Has been upside down, over 150 mph (GPS verified), and spun over 7200 rpm just about every day to name some things. Underrated vehicle that would go door to door with 5 speed RT's in its prime. Has surprised many.

I'm an engineering tech, been running engine dynos for about a decade now. Currently work for Detroit Diesel/Mercedes Benz diesel. Have had my hands on almost every diesel brand. Have had my hands on some top tier engines like the LS7, LSA, LS9, LC3, 550hp Ford modular, and then some.

The SHO will be a big change for me. Heavy, AWD, first auto trans vehicle I've had in a few decades, has wires to the throttle body instead of cables....? Change is good I hope.

Right off the bat it's getting the LMS intake and t-stat. Stainless Works catted DP, 3bar MAP, Unleashed Tune then Advantage III for me to play with, and colder plugs. Meth and upgraded HPFP down the road.

My one fear is the PTU and overall drivetrain dependability. Looking into 13-14 SHO's with PP and about 40-60k miles. Is there any advice on my upcoming purchase that will be useful? Plan on changing all drivetrain fluids to Amsoil except the trans. I swear by Mobil 1 engine oil. Have put it through very harsh tests and have never been let down. Any pointers, especially drivetrain related is appreciated.

Welcome to the tupperware party, Aaron :D.  As to the PTU, the first thing to do is service ptu, rdu, and trans fluids.  You might even want to drill a drain plug into the diffs to make regular servicing easier.  And if it comes down to it, replacing the PTU is about a 4 hr job, a bit more if your SHO has the Perf Pkg.  I am sure you have access to a lift?
2007 Ford Edge SEL, Powerstop F/R Brake Kit, TXT LED 6000K Lo & Hi Beams, W16W LED Reverse Bulbs, 3BSpec 2.5w Map Lights, 5W Cree rear dome lights, 5W Cree cargo light, DTBL LED Taillights

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

Yes sir, my uncle is a retired Ford suspension engineering tech, he has a lift. Trying to get my dad to put one in his pole barn. So the diffs are vacuum removal type? Over looked that, but easy fix like you said. The PTU has a drain plug if I'm not mistaken? Was hoping not to have to do a PTU change, at least for a little while. Seen they're only about $600? So not too terribly bad. Has nobody tore one apart and friction coated the gearing? Would help with oil wear and temps. IDK.... I'm anal with preventative maintenance and such, so all will likely be OK. Just kinda scared with a new vehicle. The Focus has been amazing, likely the best vehicle I will ever have dependability wise. Would be extatic if my next vehicle is even half as dependable.

The differentials have fill plugs and vents.  You would extract the old fluid from the fill holes using a pump of some sort.  Yup, a new PTU can be between 600-800$ depending on revision.

Hi, Aaron. I am new on this site. I just joined yesterday. I did almost exactly what you are doing. Only I was having trouble with my clutch foot. I started looking in to a SHO. Test drove one, then decided to go for a 13 with the PP and about 50K miles.

I absolutely love the car. With a tune the shift is great and I got really good mileage coming back home in the UP of Michigan. I can't believe what these things go for used. A great value. As stated in my orig listing with just a 93 tune only, I did a best of a hair under 13 flat. My buddy is a retired cop and he said the car is made to be a cop car! I think Ford reliability is great. Every Mustang I have owned was a year or two old and had zero issues even after some serious modding.

Hope the same is true for the SHO.

Can't find a better deal IMO. Wish it had a manual option though. Still have some time left in my legs. And haven't had an automatic in quite awhile...13 years or so. I'm sure I'll get used to it and like it. Only reason I didn't like a manual was in a traffic jam. Was rare, but man it sucked when it happened.
