thanks AJP and FOMO for the posts. that was the kind of info i was looking for. thinking of the most abusive situation i would put the car through -would 0w30 hold up fine hot lapping a few 1/4 mile runs?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
It's a non issue as the oil will be hot and behaving as a 30 weight anyway.
Ok so on the flip side . . why not run 0w-40 in summer? at least maybe for some folks who see 100*+ ambient temps on a regular basis. Just stimulating some conversation at this point. In previoius platforms i would run 5w-30 winter and 10w30 summer.

Thats the beauty of multi viscosity oil...0w-30 alleviates the need for switching oils

And i dont even think 100 degree temps would require a switch to 40 weight oil...maybe racing in those temps...thats the beauty of group iv/v oils, they dont shear easily

You would have to monitor oil pressure at those hot temps while racing and if pressure was too low then the 40 weight might be necessary

Ideally you want the lowest viscosity that gives the pressure you desire

You dont want to run oil too thick to allow proper engine lubrication, turbo lubrication, and variable timing function.

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

But its not too thick if you get it hot enough

exactly. i just wasn't sure what temps would necessitate stepping to to 40.

I dont have facts but i would say road racing ...might not be an easy answer....you should look up unleased beast on Svtperformance forum...he is very knowledgeable on amsoil and oil and is a guru with technical training although i dont know him personally

True, but some of us like to follow the owner's manual spec's which entails a sense of security thats all, excluding high mileage vehicles. Z

1/4 mile blasts are nothing...I've talked to multiple reps from amsoil and they say road racing is what would require thicker oil

Yup.  Open track and road racing really put everything to the test strain wise.

Drag is just "cute"

I was going to send a 5k sample of 5w30 to Blackstone to see how it's holding up.
Looking forward to results!  But it should easily hold at that point, maybe a little less so than for port injected engines, but robust nonetheless.

Sending in a 5,000 mile sample tomorrow (5W-30 Amsoil Signature Series, actual mileage was 5091, I think). I'm curious to see how it comes back, since this was the first fresh change after my failed fuel injector, so I wouldn't be completely surprised if there was a slightly elevated fuel %. The first OCC drain after the injector issue looked/smelled to have much more fuel content, but that has dropped substantially on subsequent drains. I'll post the results in a separate thread, once I get them back. If there's sufficient life in the oil left, I'll go to 10,000 and do another analysis.

Look forward to hearing the results! Just curious, how much does an oil analysis run?

Standard analysis through Blackstone is $28, plus postage to send in your sample. It's an additional $10 for TBN analysis (or TAN for gear/trans oil).

You can buy a bulk test pack (6 or more tests) for a discount. Looks like the more you buy, the bigger the discount.

Wow! One day turn around by Blackstone after receiving my sample. Sweet!

I posted the results for the motor oil analysis here (Post #3): http://www.ecoboostperformanceforum.com/index.php/topic,7336.0.html

Looks good so far!

5W 30 is fine for 99% of the time in Colorado. That cold snap we had first part of this month it was negative30. That was one morning.   If 0W30 was easier to find I would gladly run it. Just 5W30 is more widely available. I jus pick up what ever is on sale with a good filter at oil change time. Mobil 1 5W30 and Mobil 1 filter just got put in this Monday for me.

Looks like fuel dilution is not a problem...im starting to wonder if it ever was on ecoboost....maybe someone had a bad engine and that had an oil analysis and that was considered the norm

Your fuel dilution was 75% less than what is normal
