New to the site and just picked up a use 2013 Taurus SHO (White Platinum Tri-Coat) with 30K miles and am learning all I can about my new favorite way to get onto the freeway.  I need to be careful because the freeway onramp is next to the state prison and tends to have a lot of law enforcement traffic around. :)

Welcome, predatorvi, nice ride!  You need to move LOL!  Planning mods or staying stock?  First Ford or ...?

Thanks all.  And YES I do need a tune :-).  To start, I'm looking at aesthetics, including the H&R Lowering springs first to give her a more aggressive stance (though from the front she already looks like a Honda eater ;-).  The polished wheels are nice, but they don't feel as sporty.  I couldn't find a used car that had decent low miles and the options I wanted that had the black/machined aluminium wheels, but I figure that is an easier upgrade than some of the other things.

I'm still learning about tuning options.  It's hard to find a overview about all of the considerations.  For example, how do intake/exhaust upgrades affect stock programming?   What is the 3 bar map sensor for?  Do I need those before I look at programmers/tuners?  What are the pros/cons of the various tuning options?

Overall, I am not looking to do anything too aggressive (can't afford to replace expensive components), but another 50-100 HP feels doable.

I tend to be a Ford guy at heart.  My current lineup is (in order of purchase):

  • 2000 F-350 Crew Cab DRW Powerstroke
  • 2005 Ford Focus ZX4 (for the kids)
  • 2015 Ford Explorer Sport
  • 2013 Ford Taurus SHO

Previous rides include:

  • 2006 VW Jetta TDI (loved the MPG!)
  • 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan SE
  • 1989 Chevy Corsica
  • 1984 Ford Bronco II
  • 1991 Ford Mustang 5.0 (police package)
  • 1989 Ford Mustang 5.0 (police package)
  • 1969 Mercury Cougar XR7

@SHOdded Why do you say I need to move? :-)

Also anyone know why I have to type in the verification stuff to post now that I'm registered?

Anyway, looking forward to learning more and seeing what everyone else is doing!

This is a short answer as im typing from my phone but the great thing about these cars is 50hp/100ftlbs tq can be had for roughly 550 which would include an sct tuner and custom tune.....add 50 for a 3 bar map sensor and those numbers grow to 75hp/125 tq as a rough estimate

3 bar sensor is needed to read higher boost levels of 15 psi and greater...roughly

You need to move because ... prison!  LOL!  And yeah, nobody needs to question that you practically bleed BLUE :)

As far as modding the SHO, this is what can be reasonably expected
http://www.ecoboostperformanceforum.com/index.php/topic,808

Tuning has advanced since that post was written, people are pushing the boundaries simply with alterations to fueling regimens (i.e., ethanol blending, or race gas additive).

Intakes don't affect this platform much, the computer can handle it stock/tuned.  Exhausts can free up more power, especially if you add a cutout.  Downpipes is really where the restriction is, so doing that first out of the 3 will net you the most gains right off the bat.  Doing all 3 will definitely require tuning to take full advantage.  BUT these upgrades are not considered "major" upgrades by the tuners, so the initial price you pay for device/tune covers updating the tune for these items also.

Turbo cars = boost over atmospheric pressures.  The SHO reads this boost using a boost sensor called a MAP.  The X number of bars refers to absolute pressure.  The boost you run will be = actual pressure in the manifold - atmospheric.  Atmospheric pressure is 14.7 psi or 1 bar.  So a 2 bar sensor (OEM for the SHO) actually refers to 1 bar of atmospheric + a maximum measurement of 1 bar of boost.  A 3 bar sensor thus raises capability to measure boost to 2 bars or 2x14.7 psi = 29.4 psi.  Most of this is to enable you to use the full potential of the turbos as their max efficiency is around 17-18 psi of boost.  In addition, you will see boost spikes above that, which again would need the 3 bar to measure and control correctly.

Sorry for the verifications, but it was put into place after a particular severe bout of spam attacks.  Should go away after 5 posts, appreciate your patience!

Ah, so I should clarify that the prison is near my work.  They just finished a brand new freeway interchange there with a 3 lane southbound on-ramp that has lots of room to "stretch"...if you catch my meaning. :)

Thanks for all the great info and links.  I'm reading up now (wait, I'm at work  ).

Regarding the prison (and so I can get my post count up  :thumb: ), the legislature voted to move it out West and North so looking forward to the day it's gone.

Slightly off topic, but related to being a n00b here, I added an image to my signature.  It is shared via Google Photos and is 200 pixels wide by 94 pixels tall, but the system won't show it.  I can cut n paste the link in a new browser window and it displays, but for me shows an error in my signature and if I click it, it says "The requested content can not be loaded.  Try again later."

Does anyone know what gives?  The image URL is:

It is a referred link, not a direct link, i.e. the link does not end in a pic format such as JPG, PNG, BMP etc.  I think that is the issue here.

Welcome, I also just joined and live in UT.  I just got my '16 on 9/30 so I'm trying to ramp up on all the Ecoboost stuff myself.

We need to start searching and get a SHO meet and greet in UT!

Thanks all.  I"ll try to figure out a direct image link.  And I'd be up for a meetup here in UT.  I'm in PG.
