Brakes squeak/grind in car cold weather

kind of a peculiar issue.  . after the car has been sitting for a few hours and temps outside are 40ish or below braking down from 5-0mph the breaks will let out a high pitch squeak and grind to a stop. sometimes just the squeak other times both. it does produce a vibration in the pedal when it grinds. it only does it for the first couple stops when cold and after more driving it completely goes away. i've felt all the way around the rotors and they're as smooth as glass. no grooves at all. haven't taken off the wheels to fully inspect yet but wanted to get some input on what exactly to look for.
any ideas or experience with this anyone?

I usually get this from the rear brakes under first start/reverse conditions.  There's a light layer of rust buildup that is causing this most likely.  Not much you can do to prevent this, other than try aftermarket brake pads and/or rotors.

I'm with SHOdded. Probably some rust on the rotors. If you don't see any on the outboard side of the rotors, double check the inboard side, especially right along the outer edge. How many miles on the rotors?

It really sounds and feels like it's coming from the front brakes but yeah i would bet some surface rust is the issue. I've just never experienced that with any other car.

Pretty sure both the pads and rotors are original OEM with 21k on the clock. Pads still have plenty of meat on them but i plan on either doing nice aftermarket rotors or upgrading to 13+ brakes when i need to replace the pads.

The issue doesn't really concern me too much it just sounds like total crap and is emberassing when you give someone a ride and it squeels like a pig when you go to stop. haha

I had the same issue at around 22k on her and it was very annoying to say the least, try doing a few hard stops in a row preferably from 60 -down and see if that helps, the dealer found excessive rust on the outer ridges of the rotor that was causing my issue and the problem was fixed by installing new pads and rotors followed by a brake system flush. I suppose you could always try cleaning up the rotors with brake cleaner, letting them dry, then rebedding the pads to the rotors  21K is awful little mileage for an '11 ...

Did you happen to check the brake fluid reservoir to make sure its full.?  Z

I get this too after the car has been sitting for a while for the first couple stops.  My rotors are only a few months old.  Same with the brakes - they're wagner thermoquiet ceramics.  Flushed the brakes recently too.  Brakes are wearing evenly, but I still get a little grinding noise on the first couple stops when cold.  Never really bothered me because it goes away fast, but I get it too.  Mine don't squeal likes yours though.  Maybe if you change the pads, that will go away.

Well i'm glad to hear it's a somewhat common issue. I might try and clean up the rotors to see if that helps. Being that i'm planning on a brake upgrade sometime in the future though, it's not really worth it to change out rotors or even pads(unless they're shot anyway). It does it for the first 3 or so stops at low speeds then goes away so not a huge deal. And even at that it probably happens about 40% of the time when it's cold and has been sitting. I just wanted to verify it wasn't anything that could potentially damage the rotors.

And yeah i don't know who the hell had this car before me but i picked it up this summer with 12.5k on the clock
Was trying to hold out for a 4.2 PP but couldn't pass this gem up.  ;D

It should be OK to continue with the current rotor/pad combo as is.  However, since no one has done yet (on the SHO that I know of) this little rebedding experiment, you can be the first :D

Ya gotta snag, bag & tag as you see 'em!

The issue doesn't really concern me too much it just sounds like total crap and is emberassing when you give someone a ride and it squeels like a pig when you go to stop. haha

Just pick up your hookers from a couple blocks over and make a few extra stops before you get there. That's what I would do.

Are you sure the squealing is from your brakes? Hehe :D

Bwaaahaa! Great advice i'll keep that in mind. Squealing comes from multiple places at times. Hard to diagnose if ya know what i mean ;)
