Rear ended (not how I pictured my weekend going)

So this happened. . .unfortunately I was rear ended last weekend. A driver in an Acura slammed into the back of a small Hyundai sedan and pushed him up under the rear of my car. As you can see, the damage is pretty significant, particularly to the bumper cover and structure, trunk lid, trunk tub and my exhaust. If there is substantial frame damage beyond the bumper cross member or the quarter panels are damaged (hard to tell at this point), the repair bill is going to get expensive I suspect. Car is at the repair shop waiting on the insurance adjuster early next week. Everyone, myself included, was ok, even though it was a pretty hard lick.

Wow, sorry to see this!  Glad everyone is "OK", must have been scary for the Hyundai driver, going under like that ...  Damage is definitely going to be at least 8K,  these modern car bodies and safety mechanisms ensure a hefty bill.

Glad you are O.K.

On the bright side, if exhaust is damaged at all, or there are any mods you want to do to the rear now is the time. may even be able to get it payed for on the insurance dime.

The insurance adjuster came out this afternoon instead; SHOddded was nearly spot on with his guess of 8k; the estimate came back at $7,600, so not an insignificant amount. The good news though is that they will pay for a catback exhaust for me to replace the MRT axle backs I had on there since the full catback is much cheaper than buying stock and adding axle backs. I am also going to see what they are willing to do about the loss of value now to the vehicle given it will have a pretty substantial accident on the record.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the amount rise as the repair proceeds.  Hopefully they will use OEM parts, not aftermarket.  And definitely should get the loss of value adjustment.  Good luck :thumb:

Sorry to see this. Happen to me once luckily I just had to replace the bumper cover. In most cases the estimate will go up as the start to get things apart as mentioned above.

If you pester them about the loss of value they should add it as a cash settlement to you, however you may have to go with a civil suit. I would also insist that they pay for everything that must be replaced (ie. stock catback plus axlebacks, and you use the difference between that and a catback for whatever you please.

Due to the age of the SHO, they should only be able to use OEM parts as those are all that are available.

Sometimes you can get lucky. When I hit a deer in my 99 GTP they let me get a aftermarket functioning fiberglass ram air Hood instead of a stock one.

I thought I'd put my 2 cents in on the exhaust. When my 454SS was rear ended they did no damage but scratched my exhaust tips. Then 2 months later I started getting exhaust manifold leaks. Keep an eye on the exhaust no matter which route u take.

Good info, Quinid.  We recently had a case of an MKX getting rearended , looked like minor danage.  Then all of a sudden the trans would not shift properly.  Still ongoing investigation.  And yes, AWD.

Do you know how it was towed?

My Dad recently had his car towed with the drive wheels on the ground...backwards.  Tow truck driver was stupid and so was my Dad for not knowing better.  A few miles down the road and the transmission was hot enough that it melted the pan and lost it's contents.  Dead locked up at the same time.  Geniuses!

With our AWD cars, it's flat bed or nothing!  Even need to be careful when loading them to be safe.
