So while i was on my way to Michigan (my little girl needed school stuff, so much fun! she starts preschool here in a week!) i noticed a whining noise on the highway when i hit the gas. Wasn't too bad but once i got back to Maryland i set up an appointment to take it in. I just got an email today from them and here's what it says:

"So I have an update for you on the concerns we discussed yesterday....

1. The rear differential is leaking fluid from the rear differential vent. It is a covered component under your ESP plan.
2. The high pitch noise while accelerating is coming from the pinion inside the PTU. The PTU is covered under your ESP plan.
3. There is a sync reprogram available for the rear view camera grid lines being off center. The update is covered.
4 The Fuel Rail Pressure sensor is giving the P008B. The sensor is covered as well.

We're looking at Friday before I can get this all done. I can cover the rental as well. All you have is a $100.00 deductible. If you have any questions or you need anything let me know."

So this is going to be the third PTU to be in this car, this last one lasted 18,000 miles. Here's the kicker. When i got to 74,000 miles I decided to buy an extended bumper to bumper warranty for the SHO to go out to 140,000 miles because the one i got with the car ended at 76,9xx. The car is currently at 77,9xx miles. I would have been looking at a $4,000 repair if i hadn't done that! 1,000 miles out of the old warranty. This my friends, is why you don't go cheap on these cars.

Wow, PTU AND RDU! Which dealership this time?  Koons?  Anyways, great that you had the foresight to get the extended warranty :thumb:  It seems like a big cost until the repairs hit, for people planning to keep their cars longterm.

Ask them if the driveshaft needs indexing perhaps, if it is throwing off the differentials.

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

Driveshaft indexing? is that like getting it balanced? Yes, going back to Silver Spring Koon's, though i'm a little weary of their work because i had them change out the rear diff fluid a month ago (so the leak is probably their mistake). But I told them when i pick it up i want it on the lift so i can double check their work. No more loose engine cradles.

Yup, you got it!  Fairly simple procedure.  BTW, I am just down the road from them, so I get my warranty work done there also.  I am of the same opinion about them :) but there aren't any better Ford shops nearby.

Do you know if the axle recall affects your SHO?  I am wondering what else could be chewing up the driveline.  I sure hope they check fluid level in the new PTU, because that's what it says to do in the factory manual.  Do you monitor the PTU temps?  Could it possibly have not been hooked up to the cooling system?

19.  Fill the PTU , if necessary. The fluid must be even with the bottom of the fill opening.

I'll make sure to talk to them about the driveshaft and axle recall, i'm not sure if it qualifies for it doesn't hurt to ask. I don't monitor the PTU temps. I wouldn't know how. I have an obdlink thingamajigger but i haven't the faintest idea about using it. I couldn't even find a knock sensor on it

I doubt it wasn't hooked up to the cooling system. You would think there would be some kind of leak if they didn't

Didn't realize there were that many of you guys in the tristate area... I was over in Hanover earlier today lol... I hate Koons .. they sold my pops a mustang gt with a bondo hood and retreads for the rear tires...

Glad you are getting everything covered!!

I highly recommend Ted Britt Ford in VA.... Good work!

I would love to try them but that's almost an hour and a half from me. Though i'm very picky with my dealerships (I have alot of bad experiences)

Here's a question for you guys. If i'm getting warranty work done, do the dealerships have to allow me to inspect the old parts? I know in a normal shop in Michigan its a law that you have the right to inspect all parts, and you may take anything that isn't required to be sent back. I asked Koon's for this and i got blown off stating warranty claims require the parts to be sent back right away blah blah blah.I just want to see the old PTU to make sure they really did install a new one  :(

Warranty work - it's up to the dealership whether they will let you inspect the old parts or not.  I have long since stopped asking, and gotten used to crawling under the car to inspect (easier with the Edge of course) for confirmation that parts were replaced.  Do you have the invoice for the prior time they replaced the PTU?  Are the part numbers the same?  If not, the stamping on the PTU would confirm.  I would look up reputable non-dealer shops like John Hook Auto and Beltsville Garage (both of which I have used), and ask them to look over your car.  They would be more than happy for you to inspect the car on a lift.

I appreciate all these shop names being dropped! Man it sucks that they aren't required to do that. I have all my previous invoices ;D gotta keep all that in case they try to deny your warranty for this or that. But I wouldn't know where to look for the part numbers on the actual PTU. Honestly i think i'll call one or the other and just have the car inspected. That seems like a great idea.
