Hesitation problem
June 08, 2016, 07:13:21 PM
Hi all,
I am new to the forum and just bought a used 2013 sho with 45000 miles on it. I have had the car for about a week and love it so far, but today I started noticing a pretty significant hesitation problem. Basically if I'm in any gear around 3000 rpm and press the gas about half way the car feels like its holding back. I hear the engine kinda lugging and can hear the turbos but the car is barely accelerating. Once the RPMs climb a little higher it starts pulling a little harder but something is definitely not right. I don't believe it's transmission related because the engine feels like its simply not making much power. Its a big difference from how the car was running yesterday. So far no warnings or check engine lights that I'm aware of. The car is still under warranty so I will probably bring it in soon but this is certainly making me feel uneasy about my new purchase. Any one have any ideas? It feels as if the engine is starving of fuel and not making much power that's the best way I can describe it.

New purchase, I would let the dealer handle it until you become more familiar with the platform. Could be turbo hoses could have a split and leaking boost.
Any way to check via obd2?

Yea I guess I will probably end up just taking it in. I'm coming from an 04 wrx sti with a ton of work I did myself and I'm pretty mechanically inclined so I figured I would see if it's something simple. There is a vacuum hose that runs from the intake to the brake booster which is making a loud hissing noise when the engine is running. Sounds like an air leak and its happening at what looks like some sort of check valve? I'm wondering if it could be an air leak or is this normal?

Ah yes... I forgot about the small hoses on top of the intake, they've been known to pop off

Welcome, Brett, congrats on the new ride!
Have you been to the
http://owner.ford.com
site yet? You can check for outstanding recalls, service specials, video tutorials, etc.
Could be a bad wastegate, oxygen sensor, tss/oss sensors, ptu. Def need to pull codes to see if there's any help from the PCM. Best to let the dealership look at the car right now as glock said.
Applicable TSBs can be found here:

If tuned: Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

Thank you all. There is a very noticeable hissing noise from a vacuum hose under the hood. Its close to the brake reservoir. It seems to be a leak since I put my hand over the hose and the sound lessens. Have any of you noticed a hissing sound from this area? Or does this sound like its likely the issue? I have taken a picture of the hose below. Its the light gray vacuum hose.

Sounds like a leak... Vacuum or charge pipes near. No hissing noises under my hood.

That's a check valve so you don't pressurize the brake booster on boost. I'm pretty sure they all hiss but it's actually the valve inside making the noise.
I would check it out though to confirm its not cracked.

So after the long weekend the problem seems to be back. No check engine lights but it seems like the car is lacking for power at low to mid rpms and then surges forward around 4k rpm. I finally got my obd2 meter back and monitored boost while I was driving. The car is making about 8 psi at half throttle until about 4k and then goes to 11 psi. Is this normal as I would have expected boost to be higher in lower rpms and then taper off? Also the AFR seems to keep close to 14.7 to 1. What is a typical boost curve like for this engine? Fuel pressures started around 250 psi while the car was ideling or under low load and increased to over 1700 psi during high load. Any thoughts? I didn't have a ton of time with the car so I'll try to get more data tomorrow. Thanks in advance.

With that many miles, i bet you have stock spark plugs. These engines have a tendency to chew up spark plugs quick... I would plan on swapping in new Motorcraft SP534 plugs gapped to .030. That is an easy job that will most likely solve your problems. If plugs are wiped out, can drill the 1/16" weep hole in the intercooler to keep the condensate from chewing up the spark plugs.

Always worth checking plugs to get an idea what is going on. Also, is your '13 SHO an early build, do you know? You can check with your VIN at
https://www.etis.ford.com
It seems some weird things happen in crossover production periods, like features on the newer MY from an older MY that are not supposed to be there. In this instance, you might have SP528s installed instead of the SP534s that should.
