Front suspension and noise

Maybe I am getting older and my ears were cleaned, but just wondering what everyone thinks and if they have noticed this.

Going down an asphalt road that is a little worn, I notice from the passenger front tire/engine area more "hollow" type noise when driving.  Its not a strut bottoming out or a metal type noise, but just louder than usual road noise (hollow sounding is the best I can describe it) coming from the front passenger side.  I do not recall this being the case as I have always commented on how quiet this car is.  The noise is again present when turning with a dip or bump or changing lanes and hitting the buttons (lane dividers) on a multi lane highway.

Car has 33K miles, stock struts with Eibach Springs.

Tire noise maybe?  I am assuming you are on your 2nd set of tires by now?  Alignment checked/any other service done recently?

Tires are Yoko 580 (Discount Tire) and have good tread.  I've had my fill of the supercars.  I do need an alignment but it's not that bad.  Last time it was aligned was when the springs were installed - somewhere around the 10k mile marker.

Dealer inspected the shaft under the TSB of it becoming loose and way back when they did the other TSB for the clinking noise.

Humming from the wheel, I'd look into hub assembly  (wheel bearing) or it could be the growl some describe before the PTU gives way.

X2 on the PTU,unfortunetly he has a PP,would also try swapping the wheels around to see if the noise still persists,some of these tores are knowm to make some strange sounds after a while,you also mentined alignment,check for any unusual wear inside that right tire,any vibration.Z         TSB #TSB-13-9-16

Is the noise you are experiencing only when hitting rough patches or road or bumps, or is it also present just driving down the road?  From your description I interpreted it to be only on rough portions....

Since the Eibach springs are most likely lowering springs, have you confirmed recently the are still properly seated?  Since you have stock struts with Eibachs, maybe you over extended the springs which allowed them to reposition.

I'd also suggest holding your hand on the headliner just forward of the sunroof on the passenger side next time you hear the noise on a stretch of road.  See if the noise changes or goes away.  Noises in the cabin can have an interesting way of telescoping and sounding like they are coming from somewhere completely different.

It sounds like either tire or suspension noise as it is caused by road surface inconsistencies.

Does it sound similar to the strange hollow sound you get when you slam a basketball hard onto the ground like a kid trying to see how high it will bounce? If so it is probably a tire. Best and easiest approach to confirm is switching tires around.


If it's a wheel bearing it will change driving a left turn vs right turn.  It will also change with vehicle speed.

PTU noise will also change with vehicle speed
