SRT 2 SHO

Hey guys and gals!

I have been browsing the site for a month now and figure it is time to register.

My name is Blair, I am a 30 year old guy from the Metro Detroit area.

I purchased a tuxedo black 2013 SHO w/PP back in January of this year. It is a very nice ride and am enjoying all the creature comforts I did not have in my previous car. It is currently stock but the weather is turning and I plan to spend all my money at LMS!

I am not new to forced induction but this is my first "big boy" engine :)

My previous car was wrecked back in January forcing me to buy the SHO. My old car was my first love a 2008 Dodge Caliber SRT4. I never had the CSRT dyno'd but I was rocking a 17.5psi tune, stage 2 turbo, dp and catback exhaust, AGP huge IC, CAI, coilovers, stage 5 clutch, and a custom limited slip differential. I spent so much money and time on this car it still saddens me to see it sitting all busted up in my driveway (and angers me that my insurance bent me over on the buy out). Maybe one day I will have the money and time to return it to its glory of blowing the doors off of 392 SRT Challengers and hanging with the new 5.0 mustangs. Or I will just probably part it out and put the money towards the SHO.

I do have a couple questions about the SHO if someone would be willing to help a noob out.

1. What brand of oil is everyone using? Do you stick with the Motorcraft or go with Royal Purple, Amsoil, or maybe Rotella?

2. Does this engine have a tendency to burn oil between changes? My old car burned a quart between changes which was normal.

3. Are there any known serious defects that can be prevented of the SHO? My old car was known to have issues with the timing chain tensioners breaking around 80k miles.

4. What is up with the brake calipers? Did Ford not even paint these things? Mine are completely rusty. This does not effect the performance they just look terrible. Do you think Form might replace them under the bumper to bumper warranty? Or even just clean them up and paint them?

5. I found a thread on an exhaust cutout that was boost acitvated. The piece looked super sexy and I decided I must have it. However it seems that thread died...is there any plans to get this piece into production?

Ok enough of my questions and on to the pics!

The new SHO!

Welcome aboard fellow Michigander!

I run Livernois tunes and couldn't be happier, great choice I say.

Real bummer to see someone's pride and joy get all banged up. But it sounds like you made it out uninjured, so that's a good thing to see in it all. Plus, you've got a SHO now!

1. I'm using full syn Mobil 1 at 5k intervals...will be going to 4k from now on. Some reason I can feel the difference over 4k. I have 2 samples that will be sent out to Blackstone before the end of the week to see how it's holding up...stay tuned for results.

2. In 20k of having the car now I've added maybe, a grand total of a 1/4 quart.

3. Some have had timing chain issues, not many though. Our biggest thing to watch is the PTU. Ford says lifetime, we say 25k fluid change.

4. Ouch

5. Think this is available now. Some are worried that the release of pressure may be bad on the turbo seals.

Best of luck with the ride and be sure to keep us updated on the progress.

Sucks about the CSRT. Those are a rare breed.

Welcome aboard.

Welcome to the community, ex-lurker :D  Condolences on the CSRT, hope it can be revived!

1. Motorcraft oil is fine, but you can certainly do better with Royal Purple, Amsoil, Mobil 1, etc.  Full synthetic is highly recommended in this application.  Perhaps even more important is the oil filter.  Motorcraft works best (due to location of the ADBV), but a few have had good luck with Fram UltraGuard also.  The oil mfrs mentioned also have their own brands, if you want to try them out.  Best to use a filter that prevents the brief (2-3 second) startup rattle.

2. Not normal to burn oil between changes.  That would indicate a turbo seal issue or a PCV system issue most likely.

3. Maintain the PTU, as Rich said.  Yours has a cooling system, so it may help the fluid last longer, it may not.  A BG service is recommended if you have difficulty with R&R on this fluid.  Keep an eye on oil in the intake/intercooler.  It should be a "dusting" at most, not pooling.  Periodically tighten turbo piping clamps, watch for pipe splits near the clamping area.  If you smell fuel out the exhaust, or start getting bad mpg suddenly, likely to be a bad fuel injector, don't run the car at all if possible prior to taking in for repair.

4. No warranty coverage for appearance issues.  Best to take them off yourself, wire wheel and paint/put on caliper covers.

5. The exhaust cutout has been designed but the test vehicle has not been available for final fit verification.  Talk to EcoPowerParts about your options.

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

Thanks for the warm welcome!

I purchased the car with 25k miles on the clock and i am currently at 28k. It is a CPO and I bought it from Andy Mohr Ford in Plainfield Indiana so it was a bit of a road trip in my 1994 dodge shadow on the way down there but the ride home was much quicker and much more comfortable lol. Got $500 for the shadow by the way and it had a fuel leak!

Yes Black is always the BEST and FASTEST color!

I think I am going to run Mobile 1 synthetic. I have always had good luck with this oil and it can be found cheap at the walmart.

So it sounds like it is about time for me to perform my first PTU flush. SHOdded refered to a "BG service" for this? Forgive my ignorance but what is BG service? Also how involved is this process? I am no expert mechanic but I am not afraid to get my hands dirty. However the last thing I would want to do is get halfway and not have the knowledge or tools to complete the job. Do most amateurs perform this procedure themselves or take it to a dealer or shop? Anybody happen to know the price for the dealership to perform this? I am guessing it isn't cheap.

Thanks again guys! Already thoroughly enjoying this forum!

All modern synthetic oils do a pretty good job... I do believe that NOACK volatity is an important factor for our GDI engines to minimize coking of intake valves and turbos... Despite the cost i am using Amsoil signature synthetic for that reason... I am a Royal Purple convert. Not selling anything.. just want you to make an informed decision on the oil.

Check out this head to head test of the oils... http://www.amsoil.com/lit/g3115.pdf

Great info BigMac! Looks like I will have to study up tonight. What intervals are you changing your oil at?

I was pretty religious on oil changes with my last car changing it every 3000 miles to keep it fresh.

Despite all recs to go longer I change every 5K miles... I am more concerned about my ride than using too much oil.  I actually have 7 years/100K miles prepaid Ford factory maintenance policy purchased with the car.  My dealer even suggests 5K and I do take them the oil, but everything else they provide.

Blair, this is the trans & driveline service (using BG products) that I was referring to:

You can find an authorized shop using this locator:

May even find some Ford dealers listed!
