Picked up the car last night after taking it to the dealer for burnt gear oil smell.  I purchased the car as a certified preowned.  They found a bad seal allowing gear oil to spray onto the exhaust causing the smell.  Apparently the seal in non serviceable so yay me.  New PTU at 95,000 miles and only 5,000 miles left on warranty. They said the old fluid was toast so it was good it got swapped out anyway.

Also noted:   The new PTU looks a bit different.  It seems beefed up a bit and has blocked off taps for what I assume are coolant line connections.  I wonder if they are upgrading the replacement PTU's to 2013 models and just not connecting the cooling provisions.

That's a quality part to have replaced so late in the warranty.

Did you have any shifting issues or drive ability problems leading up to this?

Glad they took care of you the right way, boostedbull!  Did you notice the part number/revision on it by any chance?  The ones they are selling EBay now are Revision D.

No noticeable issues leading up to this other than the burnt gear oil smell.  I have noticed the smell for quite a while but new it would likely be covered under warranty. I waited as long as I could to maximize out of warranty usage.

Now I plan to do regular fluid changes since it will be on my dime next time.

I will post the part number when I get a chance.  I'm curious too.

Hey Boostedbull,
My SHO is in the shop right now for appears to be the same.  HOWEVER, dealer so far is claiming to be able to replace whatever seal is leaking on mine.  Mentioned about having to remove driveshaft and then they replace seal.  Do you have any info or paper from your dealer about actually having to replace the PTU?

Maybe they are referring to the infamous input shaft seal (which would be leaking trans fluid, not gear oil)?

Right!? What's funny is they've been aware of it for quite some time now, even complimented me on it, yet now that they did a warranty repair they make some note of it, what's the point of that as there is no way they can even try and say it has ***t to do with a bad PTU

I can only imagine the fuss I'd get going after warranty work with the Livernois stickers.

Nice exaust...but it'll cost ya. Lol

reminds me of my tranny issue, slipping badly & ford telling the dealer to make me take off my airaid cai & put stock one back in & see if that fixed the issue. i'm not mechanical inclined but even i know that was pure bs. you know ford was fishing for an addon to blame it on so they didn't have to cover under warranty. so rich yes i would remove the LME stickers, but am sure they'll still know.

Thanks for the replies.  Picked my car up this morning.  No luck on getting a new PTU.  Appears my issue was a leaking RH half-shaft seal.  Not 100% sure if they replaced the fluid or just topped off.  No more smell (so far) which is good.  Also confirmed I have 100,000 mile powertrain and not the 60,000.  So, not as worried as I was before and if another seal fails or worse, the PTU, I have some headroom.  Could just be all in my head, but so far car seems smoother.

Should work fine; if you haven't swapped out the PTU fluid yet, put that on your agenda :D
