any updates to this issue? I think this is my problem.
or it might be something else altogether that i didn't see searching through here breifly
I've been running torries 93 octane tune for a few months now.
i think during the past few weeks i let my OCC over-fill.
but I have a P0012 code (VCT solenoid bank 1 over-retarded).

it makes a sputter/ticking noise like a card in a bicycle wheel. it did it every now and again early when i start to get on the throttle, or turn. code tripped MIL, I hooked my OBD link to it and cleared codes, but it stayed in there as a permanent code although MIL went out.

i cleaned my OCC connections and made sure hoses were unobstructed in case that was causing problems.

i took it to work, reset the PCM and cleared keep-alive memory. now it only does the sputter when first starting up, i think before the engine gets to operating temp...

any ideas i've read about a TSB for something like this, i saw this thread. posting here hoping for input.

i've looked into replacing the solenoid for GP to hopefully prevent further problems, but the solenoid is like $80 and changing it requires a new valve cover gasket also ($14). of course those are dealership prices... not including the 4 hours of labor if I don't do it myself.

P0012 code is now hit and miss but does not trip MIL. I've had up to 30 degrees difference between desired and actual VCT angle running a forscan PID monitor just driving to work, but MIL has still not re-illuminated.

+/- 20 degrees is normally allowed for VCT errors, are you checking the advance pids or the error pids?  Also, like any other PID, the error has to occur a certain number of times within a cycle to illuminate a CEL (assuming it is an important/critical PID).

Check wiring to the solenoid, the connector and/or the wiring may not be firmly seated.

I too get that card-in-spokes sound, but only when weather is cold-er, like 50 or below, no sun out yet.  May be belts/tensioner, hoping it is not the water pump.

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

It is getting colder in southeast MI. And last winter i had almost no mods. The wire to the solenoid was kinked but nothing to cut continuity connector firmly seated. I tried to check all the usual suspects. Even emailed torrie if it was somethin in the tune. But that would have shown up right away after flashing. I thought maybe my OCC over-filling maybe caused an issue. I ran PIDs on commanded VCT; actual VCT and difference VCT for banks 1 and 2 to compare. I just hope whatever is making that noise doesnt cause further damage. If it is the VCT solenoid im not a big fan of dealer work, but im also not a fan of pulling my valve cover on a car whos model year were still in

Can you get that sound to reproduce with any level of consistency?  I am guessing not, otherwise a dealer visit would already have been scheduled ...

No i cant. I just keep an eye on it. For now its cold startup during cold temps. It doest seem to do it at all at temp anymore. Just bothersome and a cause for worry. Being that my wife drives it more than i do . (The toddler seat is easier to reach than in the lancer. Guess ill see if it goes away in spring. When weather warms up.

My bad. I was searching through to see if anyone else had my same issue and your thread was what i came to.

Nick, you should start a new topic because your issue is nothing like mine.  I was getting false knock which was seen in my datalogs.  It seems like the last zip tying that I did to the knock sensor wires helped eliminate some false KR and made it more consistent, but I still seem to have some noise which causes it to register KR at WOT.  I can add advance and get the same KR and add octane and get hte same KR, so AJP and I decided to turn things up ..........

Found it... Did a little digging in PTS and found codes p0012 and p0022 with a MIL have a TSB for the xsport. Possibly other models as well. The fix. Update PCM calibration.  So i used some of my work equipment and did the update.  Then i realized 'oh crap if i return to stock on my X4 it will load the old cal' so i did a return to stock, and re-did the update with IDS. Had to do a PMI and pretend it was a new PCM because it knew my vin had already been updated"

wow thats a lot to follow no wonder my wife looked at me crazy.

Anyway when i started it, it ran crappy and i realized 'oh yea my 3 bar' so i swapped MAP sensor back to 2 bar and now it runs fine. No ticking noise no flapping noise and no power. I didnt realize how much torries tune did until it was gone.hopefully ill have updated tune files tomorrow.

No $80 solenoid, no pulling valve covers, no 4 hrs labor. Hour or so with a computer saved me a couple hundred $$ im sure.
