Well known byproduct of GDI/GTDI technology.  You could switch to a low volatility full synthetic oil, that should help a lot, not having crankcase vapors going out the tailpipe.  I believe the MDesign CAI would also work in your favor from all reports.

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

My tips get dark also, been running purple since the car was new.  Has 28k and still gets black.

The black soot that was pretty heavy during the summer months seems to be gone for me. Can't correlate the absence with anything for sure, but it's been 3 weeks of looking with zero soot. Wondering if the condensation is freezing on the pipes and allowing the crap to sail right by.

I have had essentially no soot in the tailpipe tips since installing the MDesign CAI... I used to have them turn black in a couple of days.

The carbon soot is from fuel. It is related to the stratified burn that takes place during cold start.
And also very likely from WOT as the mixture riches very quicky. It is a phenomenon found on all DI equipped vehicles.
Fuel volatility can likely make it intensify or subside, which explains any seasonal variations in the soot deposits.

Would adding a splash of e/85 help reduce the soot also? Didn't start mixing until winter blend hit us and am wondering about its effect. Something I won't personally be able to see for months right now.

Actually, I did read a study which suggested E blends do effectively reduce soot and NOx emissions. Although, for their study, they used E85 exclusively. So, I'll bet you might note a reduction in soot by blending in a couple or three gallons.

Interesting link!  Though the solution for DI engines seems to have some type of alcohol in the combustion mix (one of the byproducts being water vapor), it would be interesting to see if the soot is contaminating the oil to any significant degree as well.

I plasti dipped my tail pipes black back in April because I was tired of cleaning them every other day. The dip has held up good to the heat. No fading or bubbling.
