POLICE INTERCEPTOR – ERRATIC OPERATION OF CLIMATE CONTROL BLOWER MOTOR – LOSS OF COMMUNICATION WITH HVAC MODULE

Publication Date: March 21, 2014

FORD: 2013-2014 Explorer, Taurus

The article supersedes TSB 14-0042 to update the Service Procedure.

ISSUE:

Some 2013-2014 Taurus and Explorer Police Interceptor vehicles may exhibit a concern of erratic operation of the climate control blower motor and the inability to communicate with the heating ventilation air conditioning (HVAC) module over the network during repair diagnosis.

ACTION:

Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Explorer
1.Remove the left front seat. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-10.
2.Remove the B-pillar trim panel. Refer to WSM, Section 501-05.
3.Pull back enough of the floor covering material to expose electrical connector C3403 containing a jumper plug/cap. Refer to Wiring Diagram, Section 152-1.
4.Cut the individual circuits close to the connector leaving as much of the original circuit length as possible. Remove C3403 from the vehicle wiring harness.
5.Using the solder splicing method join the same colored circuits together, eliminating the connector and jumper plug/cap. Use heat shrink tubing to complete the repair. Refer to Wiring Diagram, Section 5-1.
6.Reverse the procedure to reassemble the vehicle.

Taurus
1.Remove the left front seat. Refer to WSM, Section 501-10.
2.Remove the front scuff plate trim panel. Refer to WSM, Section 501-05.
3.Pull back enough of the floor covering material to expose electrical connector C3379 containing a jumper plug/cap. Refer to Wiring Diagram, Section 152-1.
4.Cut the individual circuits close to the connector leaving as much of the original circuit length as possible. Remove C3379 from the vehicle wiring harness.
5.Using the solder splicing method join the same colored circuits together eliminating the connector and jumper plug/cap. Use heat shrink tubing to complete the repair. Refer to Wiring Diagram, Section 5-1.
6.Reverse the procedure to reassemble the vehicle.

3.5L GTDI ENGINE – RAW FUEL-TYPE ODOR NEAR INTAKE MANIFOLD – BUILT ON OR BEFORE 2/20/2014

ISSUE:

Some 2014 Explorer, Flex, MKT, MKS, and Taurus vehicles equipped with a 3.5L Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection (GTDI) engine and built on or before 2/20/2014 may exhibit a raw fuel-type odor that is most noticeable near the intake manifold.

ACTION:

Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-01.
2.Replace the high-pressure fuel tube. Refer to WSM, Section 303-04. a.It is not necessary to remove the fuel injection pump to perform this procedure.
3.Install the intake manifold. Refer to WSM, Section 303-01.

ISSUE:

Some 2013-2014 Police Explorer, Police Taurus, MKT Livery and MKS vehicles equipped with a 3.5L or 3.7L engine and built on or before 4/25/2014 may exhibit an illuminated malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0420 and/or P0430.

ACTION:

Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.Connect the Ford Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) service tool or equivalent and check for DTCs. Is DTC P0420 and/or P0430 present?
  a.No – this article does not apply. Refer to Powertrain Control/Emission Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual for normal diagnosis.
  b.Yes – replace the affected catalytic converter per the DTC. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 309-00. Proceed to Step 2.
2.Reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM) to the latest calibration using IDS release 90.02 and higher. Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraftservice.com.

Ford Module Programming (FMP) is a software application that allows subscribers to program electronic modules on Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles. It can be used for:

•Reprogramming emission-related (OBDII) modules on some vehicles manufactured in 1995 and all vehicles manufactured from 1996 to the present
•Reprogramming or reconfiguring non-emission-related modules on many vehicles (UBP and MS-CAN not supported)

In addition, module initialization (PATS) functions such as Keycode Erase/Reprogram and PCM Parameter Reset can be done using this application.

ISSUE:

Some 2013-2014 Explorer, 2012–2014 Taurus, MKT and Flex vehicles equipped with a 3.5L Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection (GTDI) engine and built on or before 6/1/2014 may exhibit a rough idle and/or DTC P0087 after a hot engine restart.

ACTION:

Reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM) to the latest calibration using IDS release 90.03 and higher. Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraftservice.com.

NOTE: ADVISE THE CUSTOMER THAT THIS VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH AN ADAPTIVE TRANSMISSION SHIFT STRATEGY WHICH ALLOWS THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER TO LEARN THE TRANSMISSION'S UNIQUE PARAMETERS AND IMPROVE SHIFT QUALITY. EXHAUST ODOR IN VEHICLE

FORD: 2011-2015 Explorer

This article supersedes TSB 12-12-4 to update the vehicle model years and Service Procedure.

ISSUE:

Some 2011-2015 Explorer vehicles may exhibit an exhaust odor in the vehicle with the auxiliary climate control system on. Customers may indicate the odor smells like sulfur.

ACTION:

Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.Reprogram the Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) module to the latest calibration using IDS release 91.02 or higher. Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraftservice.com. a.When reprogramming the HVAC, IDS will have additional questions that require a yes response to reprogram the module.
2.Remove the rear bumper cover. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-19.
3.Replace the left side rear air extractor. (Figure 1)

4.Install the rear bumper cover. Refer to WSM, Section 501-19. a.Apply masking tape around the outer edge of the rear fender mouldings to protect the vehicle from damage.
5.Open the liftgate and inspect for the presence of drain valves in the two (2) drain holes on the left and right side of the liftgate. Are the drain valves present? (Figure 2)
  a.Yes – no further action is required. Repair is complete.
  b.No – proceed to Step 6.
6.Install a new drain valve in each of the two (2) drain holes on the left and right side of the liftgate. (Figure 2)

7.Raise the vehicle on hoist. Refer to WSM, Section 100-02.
8.Lower and support the rear section of the exhaust system.
9.Clean the areas on the underside of the vehicle where the seam sealer will be applied. (Figures 3-5)

10.Cover the exhaust system and auxiliary climate control drain.
11.Apply a generous amount of Motorcraft® Seam Sealer to rear horizontal sheet metal lap joints on left and right sides of the vehicle, and the rear sheet metal overlap flange across the rear of the vehicle. (Figures 3-5)
12.Spray a generous amount of 3M™ Rubberized Undercoating around the auxiliary air conditioning lines and seam sealer areas. (Figure 6)

13.Install the rear exhaust system.

EASY FUEL CAPLESS – CONCERNS WITH FUEL NOZZLE INSERTION OR REMOVAL

ISSUE:

Some vehicles equipped with the Easy Fuel™ Capless Fuel System may exhibit a concern where a fuel nozzle cannot be inserted and/or removed. This concern may be caused by a problem with the fuel station nozzle. The sleeve at the tip of the spout may be missing, not allowing the nozzle to be inserted, or could be loose/gapped not allowing the nozzle to be removed once inserted.

ACTION:

Follow the service procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.Provide the customer with the customer information sheet. (Figure 2)
2.Identify the customer concern.
  a.For fuel nozzle insertion concerns, proceed to Step 3.
  b.For fuel nozzle removal concerns, proceed to Step 5.
3.Verify normal system operation by attempting to insert the Easy Fuel™ funnel supplied with the vehicle into the fuel tank filler pipe. a.The funnel is typically located near the spare tire or jacking tools. Refer to the Owner's Guide for funnel location as required.

4.Does the Easy Fuel funnel insert normally?
  a.Yes – the system is operating normally. This article does not apply.
  b.No – replace the fuel tank filler pipe. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 310-01. Repair is complete.

5.Is the fuel station nozzle still stuck in the fuel tank filler pipe?   
  a.Yes – Remove the single hex head set screw at the base of spout near the handle cover. Twist and pull the nozzle handle to separate from the spout. Once the fuel nozzle handle is separated from the spout, the fuel tank filler pipe can be replaced. Refer to WSM, Section 310-01. (Figure 1)

  b.No – inspect the fuel tank filler pipe for physical damage or for the nozzle sleeve remaining inside the capless device.

6.Is the nozzle sleeve visible in the fuel tank filler pipe, or is the fuel filler pipe damaged?
  a.Yes – replace the fuel tank filler pipe. Refer to WSM, Section 310-01. Repair is complete.
  b.No – the system is operating normally. No further service is required.

1.Separate the halfshaft from the wheel hub. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 205-04. a.Do not remove the halfshafts from the transmission or power transfer unit (PTU).
2.Install one (1) thrust washer, metal surface first, over the halfshaft splines until the metal ring is flat against the wheel bearing mating surface. The nylon surface should face outward toward the hub/splines. (Figures 1 and 2)

ISSUE:

Some 2009-2014 Flex vehicles may exhibit an exhaust odor in the vehicle with the auxiliary climate control system on. This may be more pronounced after hard acceleration or driving in hilly conditions. Customers may indicate the odor smells like sulfur.

ACTION:

Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.Remove the rear bumper cover. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-19.
2.Inspect the attachment points on the bumper cover. Does foam surround the attachment points? (Figure 1)

  b.No – install foam around the missing attachment point locations. Proceed to Step 3.

3.Replace the left side upper / rear air extractor. (Figure 2)

6.Install foam from the Rotunda Squeak and Rattle Repair Kit (164-R4901) around the liftgate release switch moulding opening on the liftgate. (Figure 4)

9.Open the liftgate and install a new drain valve in each of the three (3) drain holes. (Figure 6)

14.Apply a generous amount of Motorcraft® Seam Sealer to the rear horizontal sheet metal lap joints on the left and right sides of the vehicle, and the rear sheet metal overlap flange across the rear of the vehicle. (Figures 7-9)
15.Spray a generous amount of 3M™ Rubberized Undercoating around auxiliary the air conditioning lines and seam sealer areas. (Figure 10)

SHIFT TO PARK OR TRANSMISSION NOT IN PARK MESSAGE – DISCHARGED BATTERY DUE TO SHIFT TO PARK LIGHT ON / UNABLE TO REMOVE IKT

This article supersedes TSB 14-0209 to add a production fix date.

ISSUE:

Some 2011-2014 Edge, 2011-2015 MKX, Explorer and 2013-2015 Flex, MKS, Taurus vehicles built on or before 12/01/2014, and 2013-2015 MKT vehicles built on or before 03/16/2015 equipped with a floor shift selector lever may exhibit a Shift To Park message, Transmission Not In Park message displayed while the shifter is in park position, or unable to remove the integrated keyhead transmitter (IKT), or a discharged battery due to the Shift to Park light remaining illuminated.

ACTION:

Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.Replace the selector lever assembly. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 307-05.
2.Adjust the selector lever cable. Follow the selector lever cable adjustment procedure in the WSM, Section 307-05.

MYFORD TOUCH – VARIOUS FUNCTIONALITY CONCERNS

ISSUE:

Some 2011-2014 Explorer vehicles located in Russia and equipped with MyFord Touch® may exhibit concerns with navigation, voice recognition, call sound quality, phone pairing, clock, media, WiFi pass code entry, rear view camera guidelines, no Russian language package and/or poor system performance.

ACTION:

Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Run OASIS using the vehicle identification number (VIN) and verify there are no open Service Actions. All Service Actions must be completed before attempting to perform this procedure.
1.Determine the vehicle's current accessory protocol interface module (APIM) software level (CCPU S/W).
  a.On the front display interface module (FDIM), select:
       i.Menu
       ii.Help
       iii.System Information
  b.Note the last five numeric digits (e.g. 4.30.14073.PRODUCT) of the CCPU S/W version displayed.
2.Are the last five numeric digits of the CCPU S/W 14073 or higher?
  a.Yes – this article does not apply. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 415-00 for normal diagnosis.
  b.No – proceed to SYNC® module APIM standard programming procedure. Refer to WSM, Section 415-00.
