Ram Air setup

Well I tried my hand at making a homemade ram air set up.  I used to sections of Spectre 3" flexible intake pipe.  First driving impressions seem good.  Throttle response seems little better, even after going into a couple stores and getting some heat soak, car seemed to respond the same, but also been driving the Explorer to work all week, so got used to less power.  I cut couple slits into the lower section to let any water that would happen to get into it a way out.  I can easily remove it if I don't like the results, but in theory it should work, car is getting more air.

Interesting and nice work!  I see in your signature you are hooking it up to the stock box correct?

Yeah, still running the stock air box, I could get myself to cut a hole into the Airaid I purchased.

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

The stock airbox and filter is not a restriction  My car was dyno'd back to back with no airbox and on lt and only the saxophone vs intact OEM intake and airbox (hood up and fan on the engine) ...No difference!... The saxophone may be restrictive, but it is unproven since unmodified AM intakes have actually posted slower times at the track which were immediately fixed by reinstalling the OEM "saxophone" and airbox.

This is the reason I think Brian may be on to something here.... forcing air into the turbo feeds!

Sounds interesting!!! If it doesn't prove to help hooked up to the intake, think it just blowing that cooler air towards the rest of the intake tubing could help?

Thats why i hate to say that you see alot of STI AND WRX with that ram air by the lower bumper area by the foglights modded.

I decided to test my ram air setup with a house fan.  Just wanted to see if it actually worked.  Well I could feel the air being forced thru by the fan.  SO in theory this stupid thing should work.  Going to the track tonight so,  we will see for sure.  Remember guys, I'm still running stock downpipes and cat back exhaust.

Well guys here are my time slips with the ram air setup.  First two sets are with the Airaid with the regular blade they send you.  The next two sets are the modded stock box with the ram air setup.  Look closely at what is at the bottom of my first time slip.  I think its works.  Last two slips I twisted my ankle, and had trouble holding the car at the line.  Wife drove the car home, and she really noticed that she didn't need much throttle to get the car moving.  I'm thinking before my next trip to the track,  don't know when that will be, I'm cutting that hole and sealing the Airaid.   Oh I weights the car last night too.  She weighed in at 4255#, I thought if she weighted more.

Great report Brian, Thanks!  :thumb: .... Sorry about your ankle   :sorry: ... I am not surprised that the apparent benefits show primarily after you have 70-80mph forcing air into the new intake.

That sucks about the ankle, hopefully it will be better soon. Very interested on how this mod works with the Airaid.
