Based on the dyno runs that Engineering Explained did I would say that the K&N does give 4-5 hp/tq.  I am switching to the dual CAI as soon as they are shipped, but I figured cheap HP is cheap HP.  If the concern is applying the oil again is problematic then I suggest just buying a new one each time depending on your driving habits.  I don't drive much so one would last me a long time, but that can get quite expensive if you drive frequently.
2013 Lincoln MKS ecoboost, 70,000 miles.  3 bar map 93 tune (E30 in the future) by both AJP Turbo and Ortiz Performance.  PPE catted down pipes, EPP dual CAI (not yet installed so K&N drop in), .026 gapped SP542, 170 degree thermostat, Dynomax axlebacks, and Power Stop Z23 pads and rotors.

I dont oil mine, I never have, and never will.  The oil gets sucked off the filter and sticks to the MAF and MAP sensor.
