Knock with Stage 4+, SP534, and tstat

Hello,

I've been hearing some knock when I was just on the Stage 4+.  Switched to SP534 (@.030) and 170° tstat over the weekend and still hearing it.  To test, I'd put the car in manual mode and keep the car at the highest gear possible and ease into ~40% throttle, just before it automatically kicks down and it's very audible.  Another example would be going around 55-60 and keep it in 6th and ease into the gas.  ECT's were in the high 170's - ~180.  Ambient temps today and over the weekend were upper 80's to ~90.

Did one wot run from first and heard knock right when it shifted which is very worrisome.

Anyone else having this issue?

Would appreciate any input.

 I noticed something similar on a long trip last week.
Driving through the hills of WV I saw +7 on torque. Only on hills in 5/6 gear.
It wasn't audible though, I only started seeing readings this high since I updated to the new knock equation.

Before that I saw +4 as the high.
I  just loaded a new 3bar tune from Torrie, only been running it
today, but my knock readings look much better. The highest I saw today was +4.5,but time will tell.

I had the same thing, not sure if Livernois does the same, but I did the same as glock-coma, logged, gave it to Torrie, and he gave me a new tune.  No more audible knock no matter the condition, and when I log the worst I see is 1 degree.  Try contacting Livernois and see if they can tweak the tune for you.

Staged_Sho, what kind of fuel are you using?  Are you sure you are getting a high quality 93 octane?  I have never had the slightest knock and I am running the 4X/3bar tune.  Before that, I was running the 4+ and never had knock with that, either.  I use BP 93 octane.  It is an ethanol blend here in MN.

All 93 octane.....tried Exxon, Sunoco and this morning Shell.....still getting it.

Interesting, have you any way to log the car? A laptop, a FORScan (freeware) and a ELM327 ($35) adapter is all you need. Mine never knocks under those conditions as a matter of fact mine seems to add timing under those conditions. At wot once in a while I will see 1-2 of timing pulled but never more than that. If you could do a bit of logging it would be the best way to determine what is going on.

I agree that some logging or other investigation is needed.  I wonder if it would still knock if you put in a 91 octane tune or even returned to stock.  There could be something going on that is unrelated to the tune.

Sorry to hear!  No codes being set?  Oil & trans fluid look clean?  What oil filter are you running?  Although I do not suspect oil starvation, just crossing it off the list.

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

Curious, I logged my Explorer recently and noticed it pulling all kinds of timing. Upon further inspection I pulled apart the intake and air box and found all kinds of oil in the tubing (non EB) there is a TSB for this and I am getting it serviced. Just to rule it out. Check your TB and piping after the CAC for oil. If the car is ingesting oil it will pull timing and detect some minor misfires. But it may not throw a code.

Good thought, Shoboat, but I was thinking that his car is NOT pulling enough timing.  Too much timing advance will cause the knocking.

Exactly, however if the car exceeds 7.5 degrees of retard I believe that the knock system cannot compensate and then it will detonate. Maybe someone else who has more knowledge than I on the workings of this can chime in.

Thanks for the replies.

No codes.  I should also mention I did the BG induction and fuel service several weeks ago.   Going to flash back to stock until I can start logging.
