Peeling chrome again

I knew it would happen and here I am. My third set of tail lights are starting to flake chrome and now I'm off warrantee. My first thought was to put a set of the black trimmed from the lower model but my service advisor tells me that they peel also. So now it's up to me to fix this issue hopefully in a more lasting way that Ford has done so far. Seems like if I paint the chrome would continue to peel under the paint......unless I completely remove the chrome. That seems like it would be tough. I wonder if I could get some black film on there.  Assuming the chrome would stay put under a plastic film.  Maybe DIY or done for me if it's a tricky job...don't know anything about that. Must be some of you in the same boat as me and maybe someone has even found a good fix. I'm open to suggestions!

I had some spots peel off on my 12 Limited. I'll probably get some on my SHO. I never noticed black trim on lower models. Sounds like even if they peel, it would be easy to touch up.  I think there is a "chrome " paint pen out there.  It might not match perfect but from a few feet away I think it would blend in. IDK.  I tried chrome and then silver pin stripe on the ugly outline of my 06 Fusion tail lights. It didn't look too bad. But eventually I took it off.

I plan on painting mine same color as my car. Anybody got any good ideas on how to strip all the chrome off. Obliviously sand paper is one way.

The more I read the easier it seems to vinyl it than paint it. Vinyl can be redone easily and would be cheaper than removing the trip and attempting to strip the chrome.

From what I have read a set of new tail lights will not fix the issue. It appears the supplier is not prepping the ABS correctly. From what I have read on the other forums Ford knows of the issue but can't get it corrected.

IMO They should of been able to fix this by now. Especially if it is a prep issue on the plastic. It has to be cleaned of all oils prior to the first bath. (The OEM's never let me get away with shipping this crap.  :bangin:)

I think you are correct on this, I've already decided if Ford does replace mine again, I'm going to put the tint film over the chrome on the new ones since the Lamin-X film is large enough to fit over the chrome...will let everyone know as I hear anything.

Mine is just starting to peel, so if I were to paint the chrome now with black, (my color of choice) and it continues to peel, touching up with the black, will be a lot easier than trying to touch up the chrome. I talked to a wrap outfit and they discouraged me from trying vinyl film. It was probably too small a job to interest them.
