I think JimiJak just went through a similar experience with his XSport.  Don't know if same reason though.

EDIT:  ok, just checked his postings.  No recurrence, so no "solution" yet either.  Maybe an early warning on battery going bad (electric power steering)?

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

Mine has done this as well.  Scary actually, because it is really tough to turn, as in it locks in place and requires a hard jerk to get through it.  It's only occurred when turning right as well.  Weird.

I doubt you would get a check engine light, with the electric power steering, it's not really connected to the engine like normal hydraulic power steering with the pump running off a belt.

In the SHO there should be 3 lights for the EPAS in event of failure, three levels of urgency.... The pop sounds mechanical... like gears.  Definitely get it looked at asap.
Here's another experience and the lights:

Just thought I would post that mine ended up being a steering gear.  Almost a $1500 repair, and luckily warranty did pay the bill other than tax.  The steering would lock up once in a while, not very often.  More so with warm weather, and also only in one direction.  I never had any codes or check steering message.  Seems like this is maybe a weak point in these cars.

Seems like a recall issue.. steering locking up right into a car crash
