The power train maybe sweet. But the looks.... I guess it could be a real sleeper since from a distance you would have a hard time distinguishing it from a malibu

Guess I will be the first one to come right out and say it--I would definitely be cross-shopping the SS if buying a SHO today.  Now, I am on my fifth SHO  so am a loyalist and fan, but with about 15% more HP/TQ in a lighter package at about the same price (close enough), why not?  The SHO is AWD, which really makes it a tough compare, but still they are competitors to my mind.

As much as I like my SHO, gotta say there is a lot to like about rear drive big displacement NA V8's.   I miss my SRT8 Challenger more than expected.  If they were still sitting side by side in the garage now that the wife has an AWD Caddy, I would probably keep the SRT8.  The SHO is far superior in comfort and awesome in the winter, so really not comparable cars.  I suppose you could say much the same for the SS, but I am old enough to have made it just fine in winter on rear drive and no traction control and know a lot of people who have never owned an FWD or AWD and made it to work for last 40 years.

Car and Driver liked the SS a LOT more than the SRT8 Charger:

http://www.caranddriver.com/comparisons/2014-chevrolet-ss-vs-2013-dodge-charger-srt8-392-comparison-test

Just sayin....don't shoot the messenger....

It's a Chevy!  When I shop around for a new car, I shop at Ford dealerships only. 17 years of driving 6 Fords and I've never been dissatisfied or stuck on the side of the road.  Just my personal feelings.

Well, take this with a grain of salt, since I am a Ford guy (of sorts) who has bought 9 new Fords over the years, probably more than all the other makes combined (without counting), but..

Are we guilty of brand/car bias?  Just askin....

That said, the only car I can think of that have bought other than a SHO when they were offered was the 2012 Challenger SRT8 (but also got a 2012 SHO too a couple months later) and the SRT8 was not a DD.  Personally, my SHO purchases really had nothing to do with being a Ford.  Actually, I really am not a "Ford guy" the more I think about it.  They were all bought as best apparent bang for the buck.  Just happened to be a Ford.

That said, I do think Ford missed the boat in not souping-up the engine by now in the 5th year.  They did a nice job in improving the PP, but an extra 50hp stock would have kept me from even looking twice at that SS.  And never said I would pick an SS over a SHO, just would consider it.

Not sure how much difference there is in reliability between Ford and Chevy.  I have been driving for 44 years and do not think have ever had any car strand me on side of the road other than a couple accidents during my misspent youth.  Can only think of one other time stranded, and that was actually the wife who had a flat.  Had a few repairs for sure, but can't think of needing a tow home.  i must have been REALLY lucky now that I think about it.  REALLY LUCKY.  In fairness though, the only car with high miles was my '94 SHO, sold to a buddy with 80k or so--the only other that had time to start wearing out was an Acura TL approaching 60k.

I personally take Auto review's with a grain of salt . It is often these reviewers that are biased . As far as tbe SS go's  I refuse to buy another Government Motors Vehicle . Ford didn't need  a bailout because tbey had better products that were being SOLD . I say this after owning a few older NEW  GM vehicles.

Agreed on reviews.  If one just read SHO reviews, a lot fewer would be sold I suspect.  They did not exactly get great press.

I am also not a fan of bailouts and got pretty nervous when they were teetering as I had a Silverado with a few years left on factory warranty.  Have to admit I was glad my warranty was intact even though it was never needed....

Speaking of GM, I know the Caddy ATS it is not really a valid competitor to a SHO, but it is a 4 door AWD turbo sedan at about the same price, so maybe on a stretch.  That is what the wife got in place of the SRT8, and I have driven it enough to say I ABSOLUTELY prefer my SHO by a pretty good margin.  I do like the handling--have to give it that.  I would NEVER have bought an ATS for my use, that is for sure.

One does generally get what they pay for, so just about any car in the SHO price range is gonna be a pretty nice ride, even if not our preferred flavor.   There are a lot of great cars to pick from these days.   (My car ownership started in the dark days of the early 70's--this is the golden era compared to that--lucky to get 200hp from a big block for YEARS from that entry point!)

sure, this is a Ford car forum afterall.  But, i must say that Ford fans tend to be the most meek and deferential on forums and message boards.  Mopar fans are the worst and GM fans are somewhere in the middle from my experience.  I think as an enthusiast's brand, Ford is generally considered to be less than GM or Chrysler now Fiat.  and this is often times reflected in auto mags like C&D and MT etc.

I mean, has anyone seen a 13 SHO in a comparison test from a mainstream magazine?  and forget about the MKS, I've hardly seen it directly compared with anything!  and what about the Explorer Sport?

it seems to me that Ford (and especially Lincoln) gets the most generalized hate from car reviewers, particualrly so called enthusiast reviewers.

Interesting observation on the different attitudes across the various brands' forums.  The only non-Ford places I have really perused much are the classifieds on a number of forums and will say I was appalled by the rudeness on some forums of busting sellers balls on price and such.  That is some bad manners at a minimum.  Ford places do seem to be a friendly and helpful community now that I think about it.  (Wish my Ford dealers experiences were half as good). Have not really spent much time on the meat of any specific make and model forums beyond the various SHO related ones and various "classic" Ford forums (FE, 460, fairlane, torinocobra, etc--was high bidder at $25k on a really nice 40k mile unmolested original '69 Torino Cobra on ebay a month or so ago when someone grabbed it on buy-it-now for 32.5k).  Hmmm...guess I really am more Ford guy at heart...the classic cars at top of my search list are Fords.

Yeah, MKS reviews are rare for sure.  I always assumed it was basically a slightly nicer cosmetics version SHO so figured reviews would be the same.  I will say, the interior on the MKS is nice, especially the seats.  I would definitely be happy to own one.   When we were shopping for the wife's car before buying the ATS, we test drove a few lightly used cars at the Lexus dealer which included an MKS and Audi S6 (loved the sound of the V10, the repair costs if ever needed not so much)

Ok...I am back in the fold...no more heresy in talking that SS smack....blue oval all the way!  You think anyone here bought an SS but is not coming clean?  There I go again...

It is good for all car lovers when car makers compete and try to one-up each other.  And 3rd party tuners adding blowers and such.   I just hope that the CAFE and such BS from Washington does not ruin the continued march forward in HP and performance.  Maybe we will have to drive Fiestas boosted to the hilt for jollies down the line.  I would squeeze in one if need be.
