2010 SHO, Winter Tire setup

Hey everybody,

New to the form and I wanted to get everybody's opinion on a winter tire setup. Took one idea from a thread started not to long ago.

Rims:

How do you guys think this will work out (just to make sure it actually will work out).

For reference I'm driving a 2010 SHO, no PP but they did come with the optional 20" rims, hence the 225/60r18's.

Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

Have you tried discounttiredirect.com ?  They will mount your tires and send them out ready to go.

Haven't looked at them no, but they don't seem to have the Nokian tires I'm looking for.

Also, how am I supposed to know what kind of TPMS sensor I need? I've read online that some 2010's use the band and some use the stem. Is there a manufactured date where they switched?

The nokian choice is good but id get a different one. I think im gonna get the wrg or whatever with studs :D

FordParts.com does not specify a date either for the TPMS sensor switchover.  But the frequencies the sensors use are different.  Maybe a local Ford dealer or tire center could help you out?

Tire-wise, the Alpine and Blizzak are also very highly rated at Tirerack.com.  Were you considering the Hakkapeliitta?

"There are 2 possibilities for your sensor. If you have a 2010 up to May 2010 then you have the band type sensor (Dill part# 1048). If you have a post April 2010 or a 2011+ Taurus then you have the newer snap-in type sensor (Schrader part# 20315). You can probably expect to pay $65-$95 for either sensor plus tax. You can find cheaper alternative sensors (such as an Oro-Tek OSC-0315 or their universal sensor the OTI-001 for the 2011+ Taurus) for a few bucks cheaper ($50-$75), although they have metal valve stems vs. rubber ones so they will not match your other ones on the car. Then you will have to have a tire shop dismount your tire, install the sensor, remount and balance the tire and then do the relearn procedure, roughly $30-$50 in shop labor."

"I ended up getting my TPMS from TireRack, as the tires and wheels were coming mounted. The savings difference would have been wiped out by the re-mount and Road Force Balance. I researched things pretty thoroughly. There are 2-3 different sensor models that are used by Ford, in the stock setup. The Ford bands cannot be re-used as they have a permanent clip that holds bands on, and gets destroyed when you take sensors off. Aftermarket bands are basically a big S.S. "hose" clamp that is adjustable and can be re-used. So... if you want the cheapest way out, you can just by the bands. Another option to make absolutely sure of the correct model TPMS, would be to pull one wheel and take off tire to check. Another option would be to check with TASCA Parts (Ford dealer who sells discount parts) or your local dealer to find part # and get a price comparison, before searching EBAY."

"In 2010, I talked with a Schrader Valve rep via e-mail about switching over to their 315 mhs stem TPMS, that was going into the 2011. He told me that the system works the same and with the same Ford TPMS controller. However, Ford has changed the TPMS message accepted to the opposite of the Siemens band TPMS sensors (+1 or -1) so you can't use the latter with the former controller settings. He said it was possible for Ford to change that coding, but that to his knowledge, Ford Dealers couldn't. Perhaps they can now... I would talk to the Selling Dealer and find out if they somehow were able to do this."

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

I would as well, but sadly studded tires are illegal in mn.

Yeah I thought they were illegal where I am but there not so getting them forsure. On ice its the only thing that can help you.

Alright, so I finally opened the pocketbook and ordered my tire setup listed in the first post. One quick (possibly dumb) question though, I cannot tell if I am going to have to pick up a new set of lug nuts or not. Will the stock lugs work?
