Event data recording. Its nothing new. Been around for quite some time now. It's not a ford thing. All newer cars have it. No big deal.

So if you modify your tune than Ford has a record of it. used to be in the pcm and it was only a error now ford has access to lots more data. in a accident the police can access data from the box also. I didn't see how much data was stored and for how long. This is not the same black box of yesteryear.

Per FracaSHO, this is not new.  Remember the furor caused when people discovered accidentally that their smart-phones were recording there position and usage... How did they think their provider knew if they were roaming, etc.  I do a lot of this type of data mining and analysis for the software i write in my job to improve teaching outcomes and prove competencies.

I think Ford is just being pro-active with this disclosure.  I wish they couldn't tell whether I flashed my ECU with a tune, and I don't want to get a speeding ticket because sync and nav got together and uploaded my speed and position to local police... but in a day where most work is don by replacing solid epoxy box full of circuits and semiconductors there is an upside in maintenance.  Even for those that tune, they data log if they are doing it right for their particular vehicle and retrieve it.

Yes Virginia, there is a Big Brother.

It's kind of scary what these cars record now days.  When we are investigating a fatal accident, we pull the (black box) and get a warrant for that manufacturer to decode it.

On another note, Ford hasn't checked or given me any grief on some minor axle and wheel bearing repairs under warranty so far while running a tune.  I do flash back to stock, knowing they can find out anyway, just in case they are trying to check for codes.

I have a tune and I speed sometimes.  That's all they are going to find out.  If they belong to the forum, they'll know that already.

JMR76

I don't know that it keeps your speed very long unless you blow something up, wreck or throw a code (so many seconds or minutes playback).  In my experience I only found that after a wreck you can get the speed and RPM only just before and during the crash, but (big but) we were never searching for anything else.

I'm sure if they REALLY wanted to they could find out things that we can't.

Oh yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if they were on this forum.

LOL Yeah, they're here.  They should be.  This forum is all about (Ecoboost) the way they are going into the future.  I just hope they are listening to our gripes and concerns, not just to get out of warranty work.  Me, I really don't have any gripes about Ford.  I've had great luck with them.  As far as a tune goes, I knew when I loaded it that I was taking a big risk.  But, we have guys that have run over 400 WHP for a couple years now without issue so, I feel pretty safe.  Once I get a chance next Spring to run the XV1 my trips to the track will be fewer than the five trips I made this year.

Good info... I have 7 years BTB warranty through Ford as part of my deal... but I really want a tune!

And... DJE is right... it's just that the forum doesn't yet constitute proof...  of course.... :o)

In any case, fear should not rule the day.  If it's your mess, own up to it.  No 2 ways about it.

If tuned:  Take note of the strategy code as you return to stock (including 3 bar MAP to 2 bar MAP) -> take car in & get it serviced -> check strategy code when you get car back -> have tuner update your tune if the strategy code has changed -> reload tune -> ENJOY!

I see you posted this under general discussion. Is this an ecoboost site or SHO site? I own a 3.5L truck. Will page 7&8 be the same story?

The Bone

The real reason i posted this is most people never rear the book. It's important that they reed it.
It's amazing how you pay for a car but the data that it stores may be accessed anytime. The argument against the box is you own the car but the data that the box stores is up for grabs. I am not sure that the police have to get a warrant though. Every state may be different. They have had the box since 2006 and every year they get capable of storing more and more data and maybe for a longer period of time. If i find out where they hide the box I will post my findings.Ya they hide it for a reason
